Beautiful. Even though I'm not able to drive I would love to retire there. If i can have my craft room /sewing room I will be happy. Just one little thing though, could you put the name of the village that the drone is flying over.

Hi Carolyn, So pleased that you enjoyed the short video. The first group of houses that we fly over is known as Gills Pier and as we carry on we fly over Sand O' Gill before starting to pass the village of Pierowall the largest habitation on the island. The last houses that we pass along the edge of the bay is Broughton.

A great bit of drone work. I went there 30 years ago. Someone said it was a place where kids could talk to strangers and play in the middle of the road.

I visited Westray in 2019. What a fantastic trip. Your video shows how beautiful the island is. My ancestors, I believe, lived in a house called the Straits before leaving to the U.S in the 1850's. As a cattleman here in the U.S., I couldn't help but notice the high overall quality of the cattle I saw on Westray. Please keep the great drone videos coming! I would love to see some winter videos if the weather cooperates. Thanks

great sound track. From Arizona, we were Drevers of Westray in the 1830's. I must return.

Landnamamadr is the singular (settler), the plural should be Landnamamenn (not sure if spelling is 100% correct, using my Icelandic knowledge here).

WOW, that was fast. Thanks for both taking my comment into consideration and then actually changing the title =D. And after I made the comment I checked on wikipedia, and sure enough, the plural in old norse is menn, just like in Icelandic today. So the title is correct now. (P.S. have just been finding out about and looking up stuff on Orkneyjar, and I must say I am shocked about how much of the origins of the names and stuff I can understand. Orkneyjar are really more norse in origins then scottish huh. Fun to know.)

That's correct ThorirPP, the people of the Orkney islands are extremely proud of their Norse connections. The Norse that settled in Yorkshire were from Denmark and in the hills to the west more Norwegian. Village names like Keld, Thwaite, Gunnerside and Crackpot are all of Norse origin.

+Garry Excellent article. I came to Westray for 3 nights around 5 years ago. A friend, who's about 20 years older than me who I knew through work bought a business there and I went to stay with him. It's a very different life up there and for somebody like me who likes the city life and all that goes with it it's out of my comfort zone. But it was great to experience it and I really enjoyed all the walks we did and cycling around the island.
