Landnamamadr is the singular (settler), the plural should be Landnamamenn (not sure if spelling is 100% correct, using my Icelandic knowledge here).

WOW, that was fast. Thanks for both taking my comment into consideration and then actually changing the title =D. And after I made the comment I checked on wikipedia, and sure enough, the plural in old norse is menn, just like in Icelandic today. So the title is correct now. (P.S. have just been finding out about and looking up stuff on Orkneyjar, and I must say I am shocked about how much of the origins of the names and stuff I can understand. Orkneyjar are really more norse in origins then scottish huh. Fun to know.)

That's correct ThorirPP, the people of the Orkney islands are extremely proud of their Norse connections. The Norse that settled in Yorkshire were from Denmark and in the hills to the west more Norwegian. Village names like Keld, Thwaite, Gunnerside and Crackpot are all of Norse origin.
