I think people obsess too much about "feed conversion ratio." We cannot grow heritage birds (or our own cross breed fast growers) at the same rate and feed conversion to the commercially available Cornish Cross (Jumbo Cornish Cross, Cornish Cross Broiler, whatever all the hatcheries call it). Those are breeding lines are a proprietary secret that is trademarked and illegal for us commoners to know and access those birds to breed our own. It's bull crap. Hence the reason many people start homesteading. I think the goal for us is to grow our own gardens to feed our chickens so that we don't have to buy a lot (or any) commercial feed. Commercial feed is mostly wheat (or barley, rye, kamut, etc), corn, soybean meal) and minerals and vitamins added. It's healthier to provide our chickens a much more natural diet including grasses, natural weeds in the area, bugs (lots of bugs), some mice, small non-poisonous snakes, etc. I will be growing a large garden including oats, flax, corn, alfalfa, sunflowers, kale, spinach, cabbage, and more! It'll not only feed us but our flock. We will supplement with feed, not make it a staple diet (in an ideal situation). I'm only just starting my journey to raise birds for eggs and meat. I currently have a small flock of chickens and ducks, and I'm expanding very soon (this month) to include White American Bresse breeding stock, White Plymouth Rock, and Dark Cornish chickens. I will be doing experiments with those to see what I can produce for my own chicken meat.

@6:00 Stop vaccinating your animals, vaccines just weakens their natural immune system and makes them sick in general. You have no idea what substances are in those vaccines. For example, the Corona Beer vaccines.

Thank you for saying that about pig. The Bible tells us that we weren’t made to consume pig meat. I’ve been off pig meat for a few months and I feel better mentally and physically. 😊

One issue regarding your sick cornish birds could be chickens and ducks in a muddy environment🤷‍♂️ They are not designed for diversity of pathogens Years ago I tried the Meat bird breeding experiment. 😁 I mixed faverolles houdan and orpington. Beautiful Meat but they had feathrred feet, so I struggled with scaly leg😢

Try crossing Cornish Cross with Naked Necks, or with another medium to large size chicken breed that lays relatively well. That will give you a really nice size meat bird. You can also give the "Murray's Big Red Broilers" a shot, they will not disappoint you.

Big Red Broilers are sustainable, it doesn't mater that they are a hybrid, you can still get chicks out of them (mating a rooster and a hen), and keep as breeders, the best birds as they grow out. Every single heritage breed of chicken in existence started as a hybrid first. And roosters can be kept at night inside an insulated shed, in complete darkness, to keep them quiet, then released to be with the hens later in the morning after the neighbors are up, that is if you really want to keep a rooster in the city. The Big Red Broilers are most likely a hybrid cross between New Hampshires and Cornish Cross chickens.

As someone who grew up on a poultry farm in the 50’s…. Back when “chickens” were still chickens… I can’t stomach the sight of the shapeless lumps of mushy flesh that pass these days for chickens. I pasture raise Narragansett turkeys and Bresse chickens for meat and eggs.

I didn't feed them much at all, they were hatched by momma hens, and then ran wild in my forrest for the whole summer. They roosted in a huge pine tree and when we wanted to butcher them, we had to climb up in the dark to grab them. I bet i had maybe a bag of feed into them. I get my feed from a local Amish farmer

My body treats all carbs the same, except sweet potatoes. Licensed dietitians push whole grains and fruits, but they're still carbs!!! I had gastric bypass 17yrs ago and if I have too many carbs in a meal my pancreas thinks they are way more than was eaten and releases too much insulin. My bc drops dangerously and I need to bring it back up.

Really enjoyed your pantry tour.... you have some gaps for sure, but you still have a lot of food on your shelves... I'm sure you'll complete the challenge no problem! Is there anything you are completely out of that you're really missing? I did a Low spend January and saved £200 on what I'd normally spend ( about $270 i think). My pantry got pretty bare so have had to restock but I hardly made a dent in the meat in our freezer so I am now doing a Zero spend on meat in February and it's going well... we're using up lots of random things & I'll definitely save money again this month. Thank You to you and all the others doing this challenge for giving us inspiration and ideas.

My son's on the spectrum too (high functioning). Since he was 9 he's been responsible for getting his own food if he doesn't like what I make for dinner. He started with spaghetti O's and now at 13 he grills brats and burgers, fries eggs, and recently makes pancakes. For me, I'll have other options around, but I'm not going to make 2 meals.

Thank you for sharing, this is so interesting! I live in Japan, where the selection of dairy products is quite limited. I can buy cream cheese in the supermarket (for like 4 dollars a block) but would like to try making my own. I can't get buttermilk here... Could yogurt be used as a substitute? Or should I look into importing the cultures? I think I could probably buy that online from overseas.
@farm-ish2708
@farm-ish2708 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can use cultured sour cream or yogurt. It will still be delicious. Just make sure you are using plain yogurt that says it has active culture and it is one you really enjoy because the cream cheese will have the same flavor
