17:58 sorry I know I’m coming at this video super late but I’m in the process of applying for my fourth seeing my dog so I’m watching out of doggy videos. Two of my Seeing Eye dogs have been German shepherds and I bring this up only to say that at least with guide work the German Shepherds being used have been specifically bred for that work for decades and are used by the facilities that use them in their own breeding colonies are not necessarily the same as German Shepherd dogs found out in the general population. Even then, anytime a student who has not worked with the shepherd requests one for the first time, we get a talk about how they are different from labs or goldens. In case I had trained my Dad’s Chow Chow to behave so a shepherd was kinda east after thet (lol), but there are reasons why they give that talk to everybody and reason why shepherds don’t work out for everybody, but there are also reasons why they do work out extremely well for certain people when a softer retriever might not suit us as well.

is it just a matter of consistency? (I think I might have asked this before). because I am training for a service dog, and I want her to wear a vest, I would just use the collar unless she is working?

My GSD has a halter, martingale, and work harness. The halter is being returned. When she's not wearing her vest - she's a pet on a normal walk, probably going to her Nonna’s to play in the yard. When her work vest goes on - we’re working/training and only Nonna is allowed to reinforce certain behaviours. (Find Nonna is a task currently working ‘cause I faint and can get separated and very confused in large areas.) But yeah, just not wearing the vest is enough for her to know it’s down-time. She gets super excited to see the vest ‘cause it typically means taxi ride or church with Nonna. (Nonna = grandma)

I'm so excited for these videos. I have a seven month old golden retriever SDiT. Some days, she does so well with walking the way she needs to, and other days, it's like all of her training has gone out the window. I know it's her age, but sheesh. I hate to wish time away, but I can't wait until she's more mature and becomes the dog I know she can be as well as the dog I need her to be.

This was a really useful video. Any advise for items that can be used to help differentiate to your dog that it’s time to heal or that they can go ahead and move freely besides a harness? My SD is fully trained though we are adding some newer tasks. One of her tasks is guide and we use a harness for that so I wouldn’t give her one for when I was letting her sniff around since that’s what we use when we are working.

you could try using a longer leash for just general doggie time. i use a 16 foot long line for just going outside for bathroom, play, sniff around etc and also use it for some walks when I just want him to relax and be a dog. his 6 foot leash only comes out when we are training. hope this can help.

This is also something i would be interested in advice on. I have been using collar for both and verbal cues but my dog has often found this difficult to maintain especially younger. I have thought about doing y-front harness like perfect fit for generally sniff time etc and a straight front in the form of vest, guide harness or training harness like jullius k9. I can't think of any other ways to do it

I like mixing it up with my 1 yr old Rough Collie, I use a long line leash for potty breaks, play time & sometimes walks. My 6 foot hands free leash it only used for training. But even on the long line I will mix up him just being a dog and put in some training as well on our walks because otherwise he gets bored easily and he seems to enjoy it more when it's mixed up. I got lucky with him that even on the long line when he is "just being a dog" I can still most of the time get him to come to a heel when I say the word and he thinks it's fun. I also found that when I pair his hands free leash and his sdit vest together I get a better "ready for training/work" response from him and less hyper behavior now rather than before when i would get the 6 foot hands free leash he would still be hyper excited puppy behavior. I just had to learn what worked best for him and me and this so far is working. I love your videos. I watch every single one. Even though I've had personal dogs that I have actively trained basic obedience with for over 20 years doesn't mean I still can't learn something new from someone else.

I should preface this with an admission, being autistic means I don't follow the normal formula of constant drilling and repetition. I recently lost my fully self trained SD to a heart arrhythmia at 3 1/2 years old, so I'm now training my 4th self trained SD (all field bred Labs) and she's now at 16 weeks. The first thing we work on is the bond, which is mostly just doing everything together. We sleep together, eat together, work together, and play together. The second thing we work on is paying attention and listening to me, which I suppose is focus and engagement. We don't do any formal training until about 6 months, but until then we're informally working on the essential basics and good manners toward anything with a heartbeat. I can't stress the importance of structured exercise enough, it solves 90% of all problems before they even start. We use structured walks in mixed environments with an opportunistic attitude. I'm constantly on the lookout for anything that presents an informal training opportunity and try to expose her to as many different environmental variables as possible so we know what we need to work on. Every dog is different in how they handle various stimuli and I want to identify her strengths and weakness ASAP. Right now our primary focus is on recalls and "leave it" because they're the most important for safety reasons and the best for learning attentiveness and listening to me. Good manners are extremely important because there are going to be failures in public access training. If your dog has good manners, all will be forgiven... if it's even noticed by anyone but you. It also solves issues on the human side. Nothing brings out the best in people like a friendly, attentive, well mannered Lab happily working at your side. My dogs aren't trained to be technically perfect, but they have better manners than 90% of the people we meet, and are cordial toward everyone from squirrels to people. I'm not a dog trainer (much less a good one) but I always end up with a best friend that I'm absolutely proud to have by my side everywhere we go :)

Thank you so much, your videos are so helpful! I have a question though. When you refer to a tight leash and not moving, what if your puppy is super chill and laid-back and will not pull you, but he will lay down and not want to move. Does that constitute a tight leash and not moving then as well? Or is that reinforcing his behaviorof laying down and getting what he wants by not moving?

I am working on training my Havanese to be a psych service dog for myself. she is too food motivated to train with either treats or even her kibble. For some reason it was impossible for me to use a clicker. She is very praise motivated, so I've been working with that instead. She is so so so eager to please that even at just over 2 she is great with any task after 2-3 commands by me. I am so happy!

Thank you for the clip. A harness or work jacket can be necessary for some tasks. Lead handler to nearest exit is a task Epsilon does. A collar an leading (pulling gently) was a task we waited to learn to cue. It can be challenging to teach an Assistance Animal when pulling is the task. Learning cues to do things generally not permitted when working can be confusing for young dogs. Eps is cued when it is ok to go sniff or make noise or dig a hole or lead me to an exit. You are so right about not rushing young dogs. This learning cue giver has made, and still makes many mistakes along the way. Having a smart and enthusiastic AD has many upsides. Learning calm and reducing excitement in high distraction environments has been a process and, even as a young, fully qualified and certified owner trainer AD team we still have to keep up with improving our skills and tasks. It is a mammoth job for a PWD to owner train and Assistance Animal. It has been worth it for us. I am very grateful for the cue giving teachers and dog trainers I visit regularly to help us and helpful online AD training channels. Thank you. 🐾

How do I help him if he's fine once he's settled IN the space (ie PetSmart or the college where he's allowed to go) but it's getting there that's the problem. He's anxious around traffic, buses and big trucks especially. I've been trying so hard to help his anxiety, and while he's made strides since he was a 4 month old pup, at 11½ months old he's very anxious and scared. He's a Belgian Malinois. Whenever I take him outside he listens well in a certain radius on our street, he does plenty of sniffing, hangs out on his long line right up until a bus goes by. Whether or not he will end up being a service dog, I don't want him to be this anxious. It can get bad enough that he won't even take the really good treats. I've been trying to associate the high value treat with the scary thing, but I've been also wondering if it's been rewarding the anxiety.

@Dogwithoutaname 3 ай бұрын
When my first dog was a puppy he rufused to walk outside or be near the street due to how busy my front lawn was for traffic nearby, super loud. He eventually learned its not scary by every day we sat outside in front lawn for five minutes and id pet him and give him treats as he cried and wanted to go inside, eventually walking closer to the road and then he eventually grew out of the noise discomfort. KZbin also have noise audio videos to play in house to help desenatize your dog to honking,etc.
@FenrirAldebrand
@FenrirAldebrand 3 ай бұрын
@@Dogwithoutaname I don't know if it's noise. I can blow stuff up real loud in video games, or whatever noise is on TV and he'll sleep right through it. Either that or he knows it's the TV. I think I did way too much too soon with him when I brought him home. I wanted to get him "used to the bus" so if he was NOT having it, I'd just carry him on. Nothing I can do about that now but learn from my mistake, and just keep trying to work on it. I am trying to find him a better home at the same time. It's not a lack of love, or commitment, but I want him to be the happiest dog alive, and if that's not with me, then it sucks, but I'll be okay with it eventually. He's young enough that he'll be okay eventually too. It wasn't an easy choice, I always said that I wouldn't give up on him, but I'm realizing that all the advice in the world can't replace experience.

I think I am misunderstanding what you said about harness vs collar in section 3. Sis you mean that just the collar means “go ahead a be a dog” and that the harness means “now we are working?”
@myservicedogandme
@myservicedogandme 3 ай бұрын
So, actually, the opposite. The collar means we're working, and the harness means you can be a dog. The harness = walk politely, but feel free to sniff and move out of heel position. The Collar = stay in heel position, don't sniff, don't greet people. There are lots of ways to make that working vs not working distinction for a dog, but we've found this generally works well for our handlers (as long as the dog can safely be walked on a harness, if not, the dog would need training to be able to do so).

@@krisvanallen Pretty much yeah. I like tactical vests for dogs because you can put on patches, pouches, and they generally have enough buckles so you can take it off your dog without removing the collar. I find however, that they don't make great harnesses. Sure, they're shaped like one, but I find he's more comfortable with a looser vest and whatever collar I'm using that day.

It is really interesting to me, learning-development nerds may know - you need to both rest and reset to gain effective learning, there is deeper learning when there are integrated opportunities for rest and re-setting in the lesson itself. And this is also why it is better to have simple, short, lessons and time to have breaks and care-free play , even when doing intensive learning. moments of rest and reset is essential for integration of information, which is essential for efficient learning. Cookie tossing is such an easy efficient method, so simple yet can be very specific. I love it!
