I'm so excited for these videos. I have a seven month old golden retriever SDiT. Some days, she does so well with walking the way she needs to, and other days, it's like all of her training has gone out the window. I know it's her age, but sheesh. I hate to wish time away, but I can't wait until she's more mature and becomes the dog I know she can be as well as the dog I need her to be.

My GSD has a halter, martingale, and work harness. The halter is being returned. When she's not wearing her vest - she's a pet on a normal walk, probably going to her Nonna’s to play in the yard. When her work vest goes on - we’re working/training and only Nonna is allowed to reinforce certain behaviours. (Find Nonna is a task currently working ‘cause I faint and can get separated and very confused in large areas.) But yeah, just not wearing the vest is enough for her to know it’s down-time. She gets super excited to see the vest ‘cause it typically means taxi ride or church with Nonna. (Nonna = grandma)

I like mixing it up with my 1 yr old Rough Collie, I use a long line leash for potty breaks, play time & sometimes walks. My 6 foot hands free leash it only used for training. But even on the long line I will mix up him just being a dog and put in some training as well on our walks because otherwise he gets bored easily and he seems to enjoy it more when it's mixed up. I got lucky with him that even on the long line when he is "just being a dog" I can still most of the time get him to come to a heel when I say the word and he thinks it's fun. I also found that when I pair his hands free leash and his sdit vest together I get a better "ready for training/work" response from him and less hyper behavior now rather than before when i would get the 6 foot hands free leash he would still be hyper excited puppy behavior. I just had to learn what worked best for him and me and this so far is working. I love your videos. I watch every single one. Even though I've had personal dogs that I have actively trained basic obedience with for over 20 years doesn't mean I still can't learn something new from someone else.

I never thought about using diff collars for diff things. I was only using diff vests but they aren’t always needed. Thank you!

If I used a harness that had a front clip and a back clip, would that work? I don’t want her to wear a collar. She is a small dog ands I’m concerned about tracheal collapse.

is it just a matter of consistency? (I think I might have asked this before). because I am training for a service dog, and I want her to wear a vest, I would just use the collar unless she is working?

This was a really useful video. Any advise for items that can be used to help differentiate to your dog that it’s time to heal or that they can go ahead and move freely besides a harness? My SD is fully trained though we are adding some newer tasks. One of her tasks is guide and we use a harness for that so I wouldn’t give her one for when I was letting her sniff around since that’s what we use when we are working.

you could try using a longer leash for just general doggie time. i use a 16 foot long line for just going outside for bathroom, play, sniff around etc and also use it for some walks when I just want him to relax and be a dog. his 6 foot leash only comes out when we are training. hope this can help.

This is also something i would be interested in advice on. I have been using collar for both and verbal cues but my dog has often found this difficult to maintain especially younger. I have thought about doing y-front harness like perfect fit for generally sniff time etc and a straight front in the form of vest, guide harness or training harness like jullius k9. I can't think of any other ways to do it
