Amazing as Ajanta is. And it is amazing beyond belief. The earlier Buddhist caves did not have any sculptural representations of the Buddha. In a vihara in the Nasik caves there is simply a stupa carved in relief on the central back wall between the monks cells. Though far less detailed and ornate than the sculptures at Ajanta and Ellora, there is a profound purity to these forms. There is more space and it is far less busy . You can actually see in another cave how the earlier stupa was modified by later generations. It would have been far better left in its original "plain", unadorned form. Is it possible that the later profusion of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas depicted in bodily form, though utterly splendid, actually represents a weakening of the teaching?That the need to have to sculpt such forms was the result of a shallower, less pure, belief. Inside the even earlier Barabar caves, there were no sculptural forms at all, but the stone walls were polished to such a degree that they reflect like a mirror. They weren't Buddhist caves and why they did this we will never know but we can imagine that this gradual, painstaking process, of polishing the stone, is like the gradual cultivation and disciplining of the self. One isn't adding but removing all that is superficial and extraneous, until only the true, transcendent self, shines through.
