It’s so tough to hold back. We want them to see how great we are and that we’re capable of so much… but if the role doesn’t call for all that, we do ourselves a disservice by overdoing it.

I have a hard time being small because of being a stage actor but im learning
@GetTaped5 күн бұрын
That can be such a tough transition. It takes awhile to truly convince yourself that you're "enough" just standing there (as long as you're filled with the life of the character, of course).

Been there. It's so counterintuitive after a life on stage (where your actions seem to have more purpose, perhaps you even feel more alive) to be tasked with doing so little. It's as if theater involves putting on the character, and TV/film requires peeling back your own layers.
@fredgalyean5 күн бұрын
The thing that helped me was to view it as an adjustment that we're used to doing in theater. As they always say, we play to the back row, and we adjust our performance based on the size of the theater space. I view the wide master shot as a small black box theater and continue adjusting from there. Hope you find this approach useful.

I've said many times; the boldest choice is to just be yourself. Whenever I've gotten the note about my "bold choice", I wasn't trying to be different, I just made it my own. And whatever role I audition for, even if it's a five or under, I always think of how I can serve the story, without worrying about doing less or more. I still have my struggles with occasional unforced errors, but I've been at this long enough that I know I can trust my instincts. Be yourself and serve the story. That's what it comes down to.

Question how long do you normally be on set since a lot of your call times are around 6a?
@GetTaped10 күн бұрын
It can vary. Sometimes you're in the first scene and you're done in less than 4 hours. More often, they call you early, but your scene (or scenes) is scheduled much later in the day. So it can be 8 hours... 10 hours... 12 hours. It's very unpredictable, but you should assume that you'll be there ALL day.
@ColleyGambino10 күн бұрын
@@GetTaped Noted and how often do you see anything beyond 12hrs ha.
@GetTaped10 күн бұрын
Not too often, because overtime gets very expensive for the production. But, I've learned to never make plans on the same day. If you have a class, you're not going to make it. If you had dinner plans, you won't make them. Just cancel your whole day and assume it will be 12-14 hours on set :)

I’ve been told the mic on the iPhone is fine. True or false in your opinion?
@GetTaped12 күн бұрын
It's gotten SOOOO much more advanced over the years. I'd be careful now, though, because it tries to do fancy things with "spatial audio" that might be distracting. I'm not 100% sure, because I haven't played with all the settings. Let me put it this way. Your room acoustics will more likely be the weak link. Most people assume the mic somehow is the only thing that makes or breaks audio, and they ignore their surroundings. So if you're using an iPhone, focus on your room before worrying about external mics. Oh, and your reader MUST stand further from the camera than you. Non-negotiable. You don't want their voice louder, and you don't want them overcompensating by whispering their lines. There's no need for them to stand next to the camera after they've hit record. They should step back a few feet so their face is still "next" to the lens, but so their voice is lower in volume than yours. I cover that and a lot more in the Get Set Up course.

Thanks for these great tips Matt. What are your thoughts about fading in from black at the beginning and fading out to black at the end?
@GetTaped12 күн бұрын
Great question. We’ve never had casting request that in 15+ years, and in fact, some specifically say DO NOT fade. So, given the volume of auditions we’re editing, we never do it except when an actor specifically requests it. In short, I think it’s unnecessary, but if you have a good reason for doing it, it’s a low risk decision (as long as the instructions don’t forbid it)

Holy Smokes!! I crop the beginning and end, but lighting and centering?? I DO that with my photos, but never stopped to see that I could do so with videos. The sound is a GREAT idea, but I will have to practice it some in advance if I really want to fix something. I'll have to study to see which adjustments are available on iPad or iMovie? (I don't have a Mac, but do have iPhone and iPad.) It appears that cropping and lighting must be done on iPhone prior to putting in iMovie, and sound must be done in iMovie, but these are details. I think I do lose some function of iMovie on iPad vs. Mac (ex: can't seem to record portrait and rotate it in iMovie without cutting off top and bottom), but not gonna buy a Mac. I need to get familiar with DaVinci, but I have been too lazy I think...iMovie gets it done, so I have punted that down the road. Sorry for the epistle. Really, I just want to say THANKS!!
@GetTaped12 күн бұрын
Awesome! Glad it was helpful. And if you record on a phone, fixing everything but audio is probably easier on the phone before transferring to a computer. Best of luck!
@mikeinatl12 күн бұрын
I use iMovie on my MacBook for all of the editing and it’s super easy to do. (Not so) Fun note, I tape on my iPhone. Before I got a directional mic, sometimes my reader was way too loud because they’re standing next to the phone mic. In that case, I would set the base sound for who had the most lines, detach the audio track from the video, chop the audio track into segments based on who was speaking and adjust the volume up or down on the other person’s. It’s not perfect, but IMO better than having a really loud reader. Pain in the tuchus.
@GetTaped12 күн бұрын
Easy mistake. You should never have your reader standing closer to the phone than you. If you’re 4 feet from the phone, have them stand 8 feet. Also, don’t have them compensate by whispering. That can be as distracting if it doesn’t match the tone of the character.

Great stuff as usual, Matt. Here in my neck of the woods, we have quite a few hobbyists and enthusiasts that, even to this day, get mad when you tell them that they need to learn about lighting, how to get your best look on a cell phone (or camera, in general) and especially editing. “I’m an actor, not a film maker! Other actors didn’t have to do this!”, they’ll say. I try to tell them the industry has changed and continues to change. Sure, I’ve seen the old auditions of actors from the 80s-90s where it’s a wide shot, blank yellow wall, reading directly from sides and you can even hear the whine of the VHS camcorder that the CDs assistant is struggling with. (I’ve always been fond of the audition of Daisy Ridley for “The Force Awakens” where you see an office liquor bar behind her.) But, as I tell folks, those days are pretty much gone. What they do with that information? Out of my hands… I’m bookmarking this video for future use, if I need it. I’ve also sent your videos to a few actor friends, not only here, but other markets. Thank you for this and here’s to ’25!
@GetTaped12 күн бұрын
Yeah those old audition tapes from casting offices are hilarious. They're zooming in and out (you can hear the camera buttons being mashed), focus sometimes gets lost, it's a train wreck. What you can also tell those you discuss with is that once that actor was in that situation, they'd been through a couple LIVE rounds, and everyone loves them. With a self-tape, it's the Wild West. They don't know what they want yet, so you have to remove those technical obstacles to make it easier for your own humanity to shine through. And thanks for the thanks!

@@GetTaped That's a VERY good point on live rounds. I'll definitely use that argument.
