I mean technically speaking residuals are not for life? Based off what you’re saying it really depends on how long it’s being aired or streaming for? Why do i always hear these people saying that they’ll have residuals for life
@GetTaped16 сағат бұрын
You’re right that the more appropriate phrasing would be “residuals continue for the life of the project.” I still get pennies from a film I did in 2003. I know folks who still get occasional checks from stuff in the 80s. As long as the project keeps getting money, the actors will too. So for some TV/film projects, the residuals become negligible within, say, 2-5 years. For those more popular projects, the residuals can continue on for decades at respectable levels.

I was on set for the Walking Dead a few years back and a girl literally pulled out her phone while we were filming a scene. 🙄It was a crowd scene and the director stopped cold and said “Okay …who had their phone out !!??” It took her a while to fess up ( after our peer pressure !) She finally confessed. Both her and her friend were escorted off set … and I never saw them again, lol. 🤦🏻♂️ I’ve been on set with Will Smith , Martin Lawrence , Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus etc. And I’ve never had the urge to ask anyone for a pic. Hell, I feel like I belong there as much as they do! 😂 I just enjoyed the work and their conversation , especially Will. Super nice guy ! I lived in the moment and just enjoyed it. 💯💯

Wow. Thanks for sharing. It’s so hard to police background, because oftentimes folks are just there “for fun” or to get a glimpse of a celebrity or to just be a part of the “magic” of Hollywood. Those “tourists” can quickly give the other background a bad reputation. And principal actors can also fall victim to treating set like a vacation.

Oooo! I remember when we did the “description” exercise in Sam’s class. I have to admit that it was unnerving. And as I thought about the “descriptions/adjectives” that people were using to describe me, I was upset. But then, when Sam actually used the word “authentic” when he described me, I felt that it was quite possibly the biggest/best compliment that I’ve ever received. To this day I tell students and other actors who have never taken Sam’s class… “It’ll change your life and it’ll change your career.”

Ah yes! I love imagining other actors in famous roles. And the stories of the celebs that were considered for iconic roles is so interesting. I think you covered it all. I have experienced this for sure. The lead and series regulars have so much to memorize day in and day out. They normally dont reherse with a day player. So when it comes time for your first take they are normaly off, and when you cant find your cues you end up dropping your own lines. The script supervisor and director/ producers will normally never admonish that actor and many times ive been told to just "go with it" and Improvise. What i find helpful is if the main actors can at least get most of their lines then im fine with their improv and it actually helps me be more natural in my respsonses/ delivery. oh, and im still waiting for a crew to celebrate my wrap on a dayplayer role lol... funny.

I'll start by saying the biggest trap with the co-star/day player roles is thinking you have to do too much to stand out. Always remembering what purpose you serve in the project is the best way to avoid that trap. Second, getting on set thoroughly prepared makes it easier to handle those curveballs. Be ready to replicate what you did in your audition, but also don't tie yourself to it. Be ready to play and be flexible. Third, I always make a point of acknowledging the crew, and director when possible, and letting them know I'm not only ready to go, but ready to take whatever they throw at me, and that this show of collaboration and confidence puts both them and myself at ease. Always remember that if you booked that role, you belong on that set. Also, I believe improv and theater experience is essential in being able to navigate last minute changes and being confident performing under pressure.

how do you feel about the photos from being on set, some with the other actor, some just of himself/herself in costume being posted in the photo section of his/her IMDB page after the project has aired?
@GetTaped7 күн бұрын
You're (probably) not violating any NDA after the project has aired, though I know of one actor who posted a photo of them in their cast chair AFTER the project aired, and because Tyler Perry was in the background of the shot, the studio reached out immediately and told him to take it down. So you just need to be discerning about (a) what's in the photo, and (b) the reason why you're posting. But assuming you're not violating any NDA, it's purely a judgment call on your part.

I shot my line and was done when I heard Frakes say, “Great job, David. See you tomorrow.” I stopped in my tracks and said, “Excuse me?!” He laughed and said, “Wanna stick around and be turned into a vampire?” Inside my brain I was screaming “HELL YEAH!” I tried to maintain my composure and said, “Yes sir. See you tomorrow.” No cap! (I don’t even know what that means.)

I'm struggling with this currently, but in a different sense. I always end up delivering a good audition, but usually on take 4+. This is 10x worse if I didn't get a chance to run lines with an actor friend and instead just work it by myself using the voice notes app. The first time I truly act with a person is usually right as I do my self tape, leading to needing these "warm up takes", and self tapes have allowed me to mostly ignore this issue. Realizing now that if I were left to my own devices, I can't really deliver in 1 take like what would be required on set for smaller roles.
@GetTaped7 күн бұрын
It’s so tough, because it’s very easy to fall into that habit. In some ways, it can be argued as the benefit of self-taping, since there are so many other downsides. But if we never feel the stakes of needing to nail it one take, it can make for a very stressful day on set.

Ive been a bit of a career day player, but its allowed me to work with some A-listers and watch them at work. Even went to an NHL game with one of them after our day on set. I have had an incredibly positive experience as a day player, and often times have been thanked by the cast and crew after I've wrapped. But, youre right Matt, it is tough work. And its a true exercise in keeping your ego in check. I oftentimes have to remind myself that the scene is not about me, and do my best to stay in the scene but out of the way. Great video, Matt! Thanks as always.

Thanks, Brent! Yeah to piggyback, it’s also tough when you’re dayplaying and not only do you feel over qualified for your role, but you clearly are more qualified than the guy who is #2 on the call sheet. And then an AD yells at you thinking you’re background.

I played a cop in a lifetime movie which I thought was just an extra for a scene, turns out it was a speaking role and I never got a script. I didn't know it was a speaking role until we were doing a blocking rehearsal. That's when I hold up my hand and say ,,, ah,, excuse me I have a question. I didn't know this was a speaking role and I never got a script. The AD pulls me aside while production is on hold because I have to learn my lines for the scene in 5 minutes or less. The take you see in the movie was a one take and that's the one they used. This has happen to me one other time on a show called Scandal Made Me Famous

When I played baseball wayyyyy back in the day, I was a utility player and liked it a lot - the variety and the challenges. I can relate 💯% to your baseball analogies and also attest that co-star and day players can be really challenging. As you mentioned, I've learned it is it's own reward when not much or nothing is said after filming a scene. To me, it's an indicator I've done my job. Someone said this once about auditions, but I like to apply it to co-star and day player roles on set as well: "Be brief, be brilliant, be gone." PS: Have I told you lately that I love you and Brooke? Well, darlin' I'm tellin' you now. 😂😂🤣🤣😅😅. Thanks for the continuing insight, wisdom, and reality checks - much appreciated.

I definitely agree that social media isn’t as important as we all think, but I also think it’s more important than you are saying here. If you’re under the age of 30, social media following gets more and more important, and if you’re a teen then it’s incredibly important. I think you and your partner are in a different position where it doesn’t matter due to (respectfully) your age. However, I agree that social media following won’t book you the role, but it sure gets you an insane amount of opportunities. The chance that someone in the process is a fan of yours or knows of you kickstarts relationships that others have to earn through other means. But yeah, 400 to 1000 followers means nothing, but 400 to 10,000 is huge especially if it’s for genuinely good content Look at your own KZbin channel for instance - can you genuinely say that even though you’re quite small, it hasn’t helped your career? KZbin itself is social media, just not in the shallow way most of us think it.
@GetTaped13 күн бұрын
Great points and thanks for being so thoughtful. Answering your last question: while this channel has certainly helped our business, Get Taped, I can’t tangibly point to any benefit in my acting career. Now, that’s mostly because I already have the relationships with the casting offices here in the Southeast. But there have been no “surprises” in terms of opportunities or auditions presenting themselves simply because of this channel. And I agree with you that younger folks perceive a greater need for social media. They use it for daily connection with friends. But to me it’s not simply a straightforward argument either way. That is, if your following has organically grown to 10,000 or more, but it’s due to how politically charged or how vocal you are on other hot button issues, well that could actually hurt an acting career by offending decision makers. If all posts are landscapes or food, I can’t see how that would help a career since we don't learn much about the individual. And it should be true that posting “sexy” photos should not help you gain opportunities (followers, maybe). Alas, we live in a clickbait world where these types of photos DO sometimes help actors. Sigh. That leaves posting more authentically about yourself, or posting creative content. And my overall argument is that IF AND ONLY IF you find joy in that endeavor, then the followers and the (potential) opportunities are just icing on the cake. But if you’re approaching it out of FEAR that it’s MANDATORY for success, then you’ve got it all backwards. That fear and desperation will not only give the actor an unhealthy mindset, but the decision makers will sniff it out. So while I concede that at my and my wife’s “advanced age” 😂😂😂, we don’t need to rely on social media at all… I would love more anecdotal evidence to suggest that anything short of 50,000 IG followers or 100,000 TikTok followers has any effect on doors opening... for any age. And that’s not meant to be combative. I honestly might be out of touch with how social media opens doors for younger actors. We just don’t see that evidence at Get Taped with our younger actors.
@kem962113 күн бұрын
@@GetTaped You make great points as expected, thanks for the well written reply! I feel like trash content on social media as you said does definitely hurt you. But you personally making content about yourself or making content of value to others like tutorials I would suggest could help, but I also now see that it could be a trap. To argue my own points, after seeing yours, I'd say being seen as an influencer makes people not take you as seriously and in recent years influencers have been shunned in hollywood (see met gala, for example not inviting any) I'd also say that if you're seen as an online celebrity, it would be hard for an audience to suspend disbelief. Then there's also the whole "face fatigue" thing that may or not actually exist where audiences grow tired of seeing you if youre too easily seen on the internet making content. I feel like it would help most, maybe, in the social circles you're able to run in. People with larger followings are more likely to be around people with more influence in the film world. Thanks again for the content!

Curious what your take is on the IMDB Star Meter ratings & if that influences CD's, producers, or directors in their casting decisions? Or is that a subject of another video?:)
@GetTaped14 күн бұрын
I feel like the Starmeter is pretty useless for the same reasons. And paradoxically, if it was high enough to matter, no one would need it to be reminded of how famous you are, right? In other words, if you’re in, say, the Top 50, it’s because EVERYONE knows you already. Once your number goes lower, it’s just a computer-generated statistic. No decision maker is looking at it or using it as criteria for casting you. Unless a low budget production is really hoping that being ranked 20,000 vs 80,000 will move the needle with distributors. Spoiler alert: it won’t. So I circle back to my thesis… the Star Meter is useless.
@stephendavidcalhoun18214 күн бұрын
I finally cut the umbilical and walked away from ALL social media. I actually believe that I had become addicted to it. It was the first thing that I wanted to check in the morning. But the hatred… the vitriol… the gaslighting… the shadow banning… and the flat out censorship (I’m talking to you Facebook), was just not worth it. I’ve had all kinds of people say, “But you’re an actor. You have to be on social media.” Nope. And even though I feel the temptation calling me every once in a while, I ignore it and find something creative to do with my life instead of wasting it and worrying about someone else’s opinion that is meaningless.

Many actors start their work by memorizing their lines (I'm guilty of this sometimes as well). I always say that once you've thoroughly worked on a scene, you have the lines memorized without even trying. It's one of the reasons getting the lines down for a stage play is easier...when you keep running the scenes on your feet the lines just start to come.
