hahahaha... islam is itself an opressive force of colonialism. indian women comitted sati en mass when their city fell to islamic warlords because they knew they were about to be sold into brutal sex slavery across the caliphate. can you imagine how horrendous the reputation of islam was when women would rather burn alive than fall into the hands of a muslim?

Fascinating! This lecture has made me re-assess some of those nasty KZbin comments left by westerners where they say things like: "The Middle East needs dictators, that's the only way those people can be controlled". I always just assumed that these were the personal views of bigoted Westerners. Now I am thinking that they might have been inspired to have such nasty views because of their liberal philosophers who preceded them.

Only khaleefah that is properly elected. Agreement of Muslims makes khaleefah legitimate. Ikhtiyaar dosen't have to be democratic one vote. Put people are not individualistic. That is new concept. Peoples identity were fused with family community. Opinions former together. Centre of Islam is Medina. They have sabaqa and excellence. Baby umayyah fifth cousins of prophet. 5th grandfather. Uthman was more agreeable to continue policies of Umar. First 6 years liked more than Umar. Allowed people to travel. Established their centres of influence. They are celebrities. Medina no longer brain and heart. Other centres getting benefit but some harm. 29-30 hijrah conquests slowing down, income less. New Arabs joining garrison town so middle income beaker have to share. Confusion among those who are soldiers. Warriors by day pray by night. Tarbiyyah and depth of understanding not like sahabah. Don't have as much knowledge for them Islam is jihad conquest. Soldiers known as ahlul ayyaam. Didn't know tafseer and Fiqh. Sahabah knew Islam wasn't Arab project. Arabs were enemies in beginning. Means if education not there. Uthman loved his family. Politics is about appearance. To appear to be unfair is also problem. Ummayyads were bestkeaders. Arabs hated state control Reorganising around try Al leaders. Another center if power emerging. Umar already realised this. Role models were becoming tribal leaders. Tribal hierarchy being re-established. Not piety and sahabah. Abdullah bin Saba wasn't solely responsible. 500 each from amsaar cities. Ali was right hand man defending him from critics like talha Zubair ayisha. Propaganda against Ali. Rebels elected Ali. He had to take charge. Ali knows what happened. Actual killers and supporters. Cant kill everyone. Went to Basrah to put pressure on Ali. Social, economic demographic problems. Ali grew up in Islam. Didn't understand Arab jahiliyyah culture diplomacy. Muawiyyah ruled like pious Arab chief. Allah tests those he loves. Sahabah dealing with sea of converts. Brought their own prejudice with them. No institutions to resolve.

New people in Islam different values. Not used to equality. More open to rebellion. Emparor was God like total power absolutist. Arabs were egalitarian. Meritocratic merit based. Had to rule with piety and justice not arbitarty Bringing old culture prejadice with them. Umar didn't like non Muslims in medinah Very simple. No walls between rule and ruled. Can feel how people feel. Lived liked them men of people servant. Democracy only couple of hundred years then disappeared and now reappeared Shura is virtue of believers not political system. In time when majority subjects are non Muslim and resentful. To bring them into process of shura tarbiyyah is still needed. Shura can be institutionalised and can look something like electoral system but in spirit and philosophy very different Dosen't claim rule of people by the people for the people. Idea of democracy associated by idea of popular sovereignty people have ultimate power say in nature government Nature of government of Shura iams mission of Allah dawah ummah. depocracyv has different philosophy. Some say incompatibility, depends on how democracy is defined If defined as electoral system, or system if accountability without philosophical ideological theological part them it can some way be compatible. At this time democracy not relevant, rather to equality. Meritocracy. Everyone equal according to merit. Merit is sabaqah, who came first and knowledge from direct prophet And then excellence which is piety and competence.

Initially wasn't Not like modern state, constitution central law Court decides citizens rights etc. 80 to 90 % population non Muslims non Arabs. Very different from how Islam started and what it will soon become. Arabs are conquers and non Arabs and non Muslims are same thing. Mostly all Arabs are Muslims. Cause for confusion between Islam and arabism. Social change As long as they're conquering they understand their place but later when settled confusion. Many different types of Arabs Some have converted to christianity. Near Syria and oersia Yemen are city civilised used to central state control Northern are tribal. Quraysh more northern cities with tribal nomadic culture. Frontiers gets further and further away. Abu bakr didn't trust former riddah tribes. Didn't use them Umar, needed extra soldiers. If not used they would be resentful. Armies much different. Very complex situation. Not simplistic piety and miracles. Changing demographics. Ethnic ratial class problems emerging.

Artificially irrigated Iraq. Required investment. Black gold If distributed to soldiers, would have lost value. Didnt want Muslims to become peasants tied to land. Or landlords everyone else would depend on. Should belong to all Muslims. Too valuable different type of wealth. Fayy booty without weighting. Conquered lands that come after conquest Muslims didn't know about permenant conquest but caravans movable property. Lands called sawaaqi. Need permenant income and employees. Before that everything would be distributed

No day o peace stability. Great challenges. Abu bakr overcame then all. Calioha ideals, but no institutions and no time to build, but challenges and had to adapt. He was head of army not head of state. Umar chosen to ensure continuity. No time or luxury to hold elections. Was for ummah to accept nomination of Abu bakr.
