@ampdrawrepair5352

You need the filter on the set up you’re using because you do not have a regulator at the tank, you’re running high tank pressure through your hose, and then using the built in regulator on the heater to reduce the tank pressure. Nothing really wrong with that, but its important to point out if you run the hose without a regulator at the tank make sure you use the filer or you’ll plug things up with oil and ruin your heater. Personally, speaking as a gas appliance expert, you will eventually end up with oil in your hose. The combination of that oil and high pressure will significantly reduce the life of your hose, plus the oil doesn’t clean off easily and stinks something awful. I would recommend ditching the filter and buying the hose that has the regulator built into the hose where the regulator actually connects directly to the tank and then the hose. The filter isn’t there to filter dirt like a person traditionally thinks a filter does, its there to filter the oil that will condense in the high pressure, normally this oil condenses and stays in the bottom of the tank, but running high pressure in the hose allows this oil to condense and collect in the hose. This isn’t a problem if running the regulator at the tank because it’s limiting only low pressure vapor going into the hose. Yes, you end up with a redundant regulator, 1 at the tank, plus the built in 1 on the heater, but this is better than oil and high pressure in your hose. Its also a lot safer, if/when the hose develops a leak you’ll end up with a small low pressure fed leak and fireball if you regulate at the tank. If you run full tank pressure from no regulator at the tank you’re going to get a high pressure leak and massive fireball when your hose eventually pops a leak. The rule is, always run your first stage regulator as close to the supply (the tank) as absolutely possible. A 2 stage in one (typical) regulator is fine for hose lengths up to about 12 feet. Any longer than that and you should run a first stage regulator at the source, then a second stage regulator at the equipment on the opposite end of the hose. Most regulators you see are a 2 stage regulator, both stages are built into the one package, but it’s important to know there are 3 types of regulators and they are not inner changeable, there are “first stage”, “second stage” and “2 stage” regulators.

The reason you don’t store or use those refillable tanks indoors isn’t because they might leak, its because they do occasionally leak intentionally by design. They have a built in safety valve that bleeds off pressure build up in the tank. Temperature, even a slight temperature change will increase or reduce the pressure inside the tank. When that pressure increases the safety valve on the tank will bleed off propane out of the tank. In the open outside air this is normal and safe (safer than the tank just building pressure till it ruptures at least), indoors however this bleed off propane can accumulate in the confined space along the floor and is then a serious explosion hazard. Since propane sinks down, doesn’t float up, you likely won’t smell the accumulation. All these refillable tanks have these valves built into them, the gas releases out a small hole regardless of if a hose is connected or not and regardless of if the hand valve is open or closed. This is why you should never use one of these tanks indoors, and why you should also never even store one of these tanks unused indoors like inside your garage, a shed or a camper. Plus it’s against the law to use, bring or store a propane tank indoors.

Great video! One thing I especially like about using a 20 lb. tank is that they are reusable, whereas if you often use the heater with 1 lb. propane cylinders you end up with lots of empty ones to dispose of (recycle if possible).
