the issue you have is the pressure is never kept inward. the solution is to bear hug the tree and pull the spikes toward you through the tree. this places the weight inward so the spikes dig in based off th weight pulling inward. not down, not out. but in

angle the gands. ofcourse they "fall out" if you do it that way

One you get it to a read heat, put it in a box with lime in it. Gardeners Lime will do. I use a wooden box with dimensions big enough to ensure that the iron has at least 2-3 inches from sides/bottom/top.
