not controversial. straight out and out obstruction, lazy overweight 1st baseman willfully blocked access to the base by that straddling position. easy call to make. players are taught to get to the foul area with the feet before applying the tag. 1b was too lazy to do that

you have to be careful and not to "willy nilly" give warnings if the rule book does not say to give a warning. There are many places where the "warning" language is involved, this is not one of them. Is you see it, call it. Once we (umpires) start deciding which rules to apply, then we cannot apply any of them. Umpires do not get to choose.

@@boblarson9994 Well, I, for one, appreciate you doing what you have done there, Mr. Multi-accounts! I had a Food 4 Less in my home town, which I wrote a short jingle for pure entertainment, relating the name of the grocery store to stealing, as if the store was built for thieves. I had decided once I was in a band, I would take that little ditty, and use it as the chorus, and write an entire punk song around it. One thing I remember about that place, besides being ghetto in appearance, was their shopping carts being significantly larger than standard size, as if their killer deals coupled with the extra room in the shopping cart would encourage customers to purchase more.

Clear obstruction, but what most of you haven't pick up on is that the pitch before, the first baseman did the same thing. You can't straddle the bag. I don't blame the first baseman or the Umpire. I blame the coach.

OK ya no... let's say first baseman did obstruct the runner before the he slid to first, it is only to the base the runner intended to go, and it's not a deap play when it happens because if there was a past ball runner can advance and still be tagged out.
@blarsonjr
@blarsonjr 2 жыл бұрын
wrong, type A obstruction. If a play is being made on the obstructed runner, or if the batter-runner is obstructed before he touches first base, the ball is dead and all runners shall advance, without liability to be put out, to the bases they would have reached, in the umpire’s judgment, if there had been no obstruction. The obstructed runner shall be awarded at least one base beyond the base he had last legally touched before the obstruction. Any preceding runners, forced to advance by the award of bases as the penalty for obstruction, shall also advance without liability to be put out.

No Sam, you're confusing this with type 2 obstruction. This is type one obstruction, which is committed while making a play on the runner in question. The penalty for type 1 obstruction is always the next base, regardless of where the runner was headed.

Going to be calling that a lot in little league. Feild umpire in A with runner on first means there at least 1 other feild umpire. clear obstruction, I'd most likely call it, but a lot of guys will let something like this go to avoid the griping... no one's likely to gripe about it if you don't call it obstruction. at the youth level, it may be worth calling the obstruction to teach the defense not to do that. and yes, under all baseball rulesets, the only possible award on this play is 2nd base; you can't say "well he wasn't going to 2nd, so he's just safe at 1st"; I've heard just keeping him at 1B may be right for softball, but this is baseball

Although the 1st baseman was set up in a position that does hinder ACCESS back to the bag the runner did in fact get his foot back on the bag in time... So... I think a really good umpire would call him safe... Time out... And quietly reminded the 1 baseman to not block the bag... No need for obstruction here at this time unless it caused the runner to be out!
@davej3781
@davej3781 3 жыл бұрын
the catch with your interpretation is that type 1/A obstruction is an immediate dead ball; how can the runner be safe (or out) with the ball dead? either he was obstructed or he wasn't, and that's the end of it, you can't hinge it on the outcome of the play.
@mjb2424
@mjb2424 5 жыл бұрын
I could tell after the first pitch in the video that Obstruction was going to be called...WHY... Because like a LOT of youth players and especially ones transitioning from LL to the big diamond, the first baseman has NOT been taught the proper positioning for a first baseman. You just cant stand in front of the bag any old time you want. You must leave a lane to the base open for the runner. Now... I often see this and I usually warn the 1st baseman that he cannot occupy the base when there is no play being made AND he must leave some part of base open to the runner to get back to even when he is receiving a throw. The call was right!
@mattheweaston5244

Read the rule carefully. Remember obstruction is not an automatic base award. The runner shall advance without liability to be put out to the base the umpire judged he would have made. In this case runner would stay at first. There is no way he would have made it safely to 2nd.
@MH-Tesla
@MH-Tesla 5 жыл бұрын
Type 1 obstruction is always awarded the next base no matter what. The rules require it. Was a play being made on this runner when he was obstructed? If the answer is yes then he gets second base. You are referring to type 2 obstruction.
@kelp4066
@kelp4066 5 жыл бұрын
It is obstruction. First basemen blocks with their foot the middle of the bag. By OBR (official baseball rules), that is considered type 1 or some call type A obstruction which brings an award of the next base. Runner gets second. Any ump that does not call that obstruction, I don't care how big of dog, are absolutely wrong.

Seemed like a pretty simple obstruction call and a proper award of 2B. The first baseman needs to learn proper technique for a play like that when he is coming in behind the runner to receive a throw from the catcher and potentially pick off the runner. He has to position himself to allow the base runner a way to get back to the bag. Sometimes an obstruction call like this will help both the first baseman and his coach learn the proper technique.

@blarsonjr
@blarsonjr 8 жыл бұрын
first of all there doesn't need to be an attempt to reach 2nd. Type A OBS. As an umpire you should know that. The questions is not on the rule and the award, by rule it was OBS. If you rule OBS on this, the runner will be awarded second base by rule. Second, she/her ? . Check your eyes and hearing, umpire is male. Third, He/She has to call OBS at every base? This was a 6 man crew. By looking at the umpires position on the line with R1, then we know it is at the very least a 3 man crew. So, this umpire wouldn't be making calls at other bases. Also... the coach stepped out, asked, "First baseman blocked the bag?" Umpire answered "yes". He shook his head and said ok and told F1 not to do that anymore. Lastly, the post was put up there to make people think...would you, or would you not call this in a game. Would you have a quiet word w/ F1 and use preventive umpiring? Sometimes it takes some stones to put a play out there for constructive conversation, whether your call was right, wrong, technically correct but one your should not have called, etc.
@ButchRahman
@ButchRahman 8 жыл бұрын
What would I do? Nothing on the call and nothing on coaching 1B. Especially in what appears to be a Championship Game, since there's a six man crew (wow) and bling on the fences. It's not fair at that point to the other team to be coaching the other team's kids. During the regular season, yes, I tell 1B that he is out of position and may hinder the runner's return and if he does, the runner is not out but rather will be awarded second base. One thing I do not have here is historic perspective. If the umpire warned 1B four times already and said the next time he's calling Obstruction, then I change my opinion and its a good call. Six man crew?? Maybe there is where the unnecessary extra calls are coming from. Regardless, the calls need to be consistent throughout the entire field. All six should have made the same call in that situation. I very, very much doubt that is the case. Every brush of a body is not Obstruction, especially when there was no penalty to the offensive team. Say the bases are loaded - you're going to award three base advancements and a run for what - nothing. Sorry, I can clearly see the umpire is male now - originally without paying much attention to the umpire as I was focused on looking for the Obstruction - plus the video is very grainy. My apologies.

When we was kids, my pals and I used to walk through the woods and cross the Post Road to hang at the Food Emporium in Westport (even going back to the early 70s, when it was 'Shopwell'). Got kicked out many times. We used to race the shopping carts through the parking lot on Sundays when it was closed ( CT 'blue laws'!). Shopped there once barefoot, carrying the family cat. And in the 90s, my brother and I took Simon Townsend there, where he bought some cheap shades...Indeed, "someone's made a store that's just for me"!
