This is the first time ever seeing a video/recording of my great uncle. I always heard stories of him growing up as a kid.

Derek was the VERY BEST live performer you’d ever see. Great, funny personality, crowds Loved him. Armchair amateurs always easy to criticize in this digital age of closeups on the performers hands. This was a clip of a teaching video. 🙄🤦🏽♂️

During WW2, the US Army hired John Scarne to tour military bases and show GI's how NOT to be cheated. My Dad met him at one such tour. Scarne could shuffle the deck and deal himself (or anyone else) four aces or four kings, then shuffle the deck and deal himself blackjack, at will. His motto was "If I can do it, so can anyone else, and you'd never know it. So don't play cards, and you won't be cheated." I've read a few of his books. John Scarne was a great magician, and a great man.

Quick Fact: Minimilists call this show where Blaine was interviewed on this video the most expensive and overly pretentious studio they have ever seen. Many minilists have been hospitalized due to the flipped over painted pallet table and dark background on this set. Lets pray for the injured.

Even without pre-show work, just tossing out letters and numbers at random to a crowd that large will result in a lot of hits, especially if people can respond with, 'That's my daughter.'. Getting house numbers correct by random is pretty lucky. He is or was a good showman. I think that is all he ever claimed to be. Work fast, lots of patter, move on quickly if something does not hit and people will remember the relatively few successes.

I saw John Scarne in person.. He was a friend of my dad's. He did tricks for me at a table in my dad's restaurant in Union City. My dad, Larry Klunck, accompanied him to London and Curacao check casinos there. The Hilton in London... He came to my dad's wake..

We must respect John Scarne but he was continuing a tradition of card magic, tricks, sleights and manipulation that includes but is not limited to Dai Vernon and S W Erdnase'.

@@marksimpson2321 Scarne, to my understanding, is the first one to do work out how to do it in front of large audiences. Thanks for making me aware of Dai Vernon and S. W. Ernase'. My library as a kid must not have had The Expert at the Card Table.
