So, do guys actually "use" these 3-figure, 4-figure knives?!? Or do they just sit around and flip the blades open and close, all day in their workshops? 😅
@DylanAndLeslie6 күн бұрын
I rotate daily between a Chris reeve Sebenza, a Spartan Harsey Folder, and a TRM atom. I believe that even this premium stuff is meant to be used. Do I sit and flip them as a fidget ? Absolutely lol. But all of my knives get routinely worked. I can’t speak for anyone else.

I also use them regularly. There is a great group of collectors who over time sell and resell these expensive folders for nearly half price as users. What makes them worth the investment is that they can be sent back for refinishing or warranty service and for significantly lower price you get a like-new product still under warranty that holds up to excessive use/abuse. Sure, nobody needs a knife costing more than $99, but if you save for it then ya might as well enjoy the function of such a great product.

The Diplomat Magnum is seriously underrated. As you say, outstanding nib in a cheap body. I wish Diplomat would update the material of the Magnum, to at least “nicer plastic” - it truly feels cheap (I'd happily pay $5 or $10 more for this). Still, one of my best writers, and always inked up. Monteverde Dakota looked great, hadn’t seen it before and I agree, reminds me a lot of my Pilot E95s. Thanks for the video.

It's a great pocket pen because the lid comes off quickly to write with. Love mine to bits. I use black pigment ink in it and it writes well on any paper. For most of my other work I use the Pilot Custom 823 and the Pelikan Century 3776. I have so many fountain pens but these three are my all time favs.

It is a sad commentary on luxury brands that the 149 nowadays is a mere shadow of its former self. It writes no better than my Pilot 74 or Pilot E95S, no matter the ink.
@johnsanabria327911 күн бұрын
Your 149 is an F. MB nibs tend to write broader than what the nib is ,simply because there's a small round ball of material at the end of the nib. Typical of MB nibs.

My personal go-to pen is the Pilot Custom Heritage 912 in FA (and am thinking of up-sizing to the Pilot Custom 743 in FA), but I have a second-hand MB 149 in F. I'm currently thinking it might be a bit too big for me - which I didn't expect at all, since my previous worry was whether a fountain pen would be too slim for my liking due to my experience with a GvFC Guilloche - but I still definitely respect it for what it is, and will be holding onto mine (for future testing to see if how I hold pens affects whether or not I find the pen comfortable to use, and also because it has sentimental value to me since someone close to me also helped me pay for part of its cost). There are so many fountain pens out there that cater to different tastes and considerations there really is no need to dunk on any brand - if the MB is your type of brand and the149 is what inspires you to write by hand more, all power to you!
@cavan_goh12 күн бұрын
I would say hype wise definitely due to it still being the no. 1 luxury brand among fine writing instruments (Montblanc, with their ‘149’ fountain pens line being what their most famous for)… But I think hype aside: the reason why do people still invest in one (or a couple of MB pens like myself lol), is because of their upscale value and worthiness of generational heirloom (as you pass it down to your future offspring). It’s something that not all luxury writing brands can be compared to, and people will know about it & thus treasure the value of it.
@user-gl5ld9vm7i12 күн бұрын
Montblanc is utterly over+rated. Any Japanese Sailor or Pilot will write much better than Montblanc. And this is coming from a person who owns a Montblanc 😂

I, personally, totally agree with you about montblanc being superb pens. Perhaps because some of their pens, like Montblanc rollarball refills, are such useless ones out there and expensive too that it leaves a bad experience for some. Mitsubishi Unball eye is the best roller ball pen in the world, but it isn't elegant for a boardroom! Thus my appreciation for a pen that looks as good as it writes. I am grateful for your review and appreciate your opinion
@norm725712 күн бұрын
I bought my Montblanc 149 in 1984, and it has been inked and in my daily rotation for 40 years. I have about 50 fountain pens, including Parker 45s that I used during my undergraduate studies in the 60s, and a Lamy 2000 that I bought in 1968 when I was in graduate school. I am a professional writer - my pens are the tools of my trade. I use Montblanc and Lamy ink in my German pens, Waterman ink in my US and French Waterman pens, Parker ink in my Parker pens, and Twsbi ink in my Chinese pens. The ink formulas work best in the pens that are geographically matched… My only issue is with Twisbi ink, which I find somewhat less smooth than the Parker, Waterman, Lamy, or Montblanc inks. Take care when choosing ink - some inks are acidic, some are alkaline, some dry too quickly and some don’t dry fast enough. I avoid all inks with “shimmer” - this can clog your feeds and piston filling mechanisms.

Great video.. I have a 149.. not my cup of tea.. I prefer Pelikan.. you can remove that nib for cleaning and easy lubrication.. but then, I quite pleased with my Lamy Lx, with an EF gold nib.. I’d be happy if that was the only pen I could have. I get that you don’t need more than a Pilot rollerball.. but for me it is the aesthetics.. thanks and great work!

@@DylanAndLeslie I went to the Montblanc store today; tried out the fountain pens... they had demo units for the different nibs, I thought they were stand-in plastic fakes! $1000 for a basic plastic fountain pen?!?!?!!? It's just stupid! It's just completely stupid, and I fully understand buying a rolex, or a festool, or a Mercedes S-Class or something! This is just stupid! STUPID! Buy Monteverde! FANTASTIC pens, completely underrated!

Very high price for a pen that writes well but not really any better than an awful lot of cheaper offerings. Too many reviewers correlate brand recognition and writing performance and assume that the former somehow automatically elevates the latter. It doesn't.
@DylanAndLeslie12 күн бұрын
Have you had a lot of experience with a 149 and pens of that caliber?
@davyj521612 күн бұрын
@@DylanAndLeslie Yes, quite a lot actually, but I don't consider the 149 to be high calibre - it's just a somewhat ordinary writer. In my opinion, Pelikan makes better quality pens that also have better nibs, and while still expensive, are a lot cheaper than the regular MB line-up. At the shop-price of an MB149 I can acquire a Pilot Custom Urushi - that is far better made and has a nib to die for. And I could go on in this vein. Personal taste in style though is another matter, and not really something that lends itself to argument.

I ended up getting one a couple months ago from a seller on eBay who I've bought a couple pens from. My hands tend to get a bit sweaty and some resins begin to feel gross and slippery so I'm always wiping the pen down. With the 149, I don't have that problem at all. I have quite a few pens in the 149 price range, and none of them have that quality as far as the resin goes. It's really an enjoyable pen to write with. It's very wet, and I can tell that it must have been tuned at some point in the past because it doesn't hard start, skip, or anything, which is what I've seen people complain about. Glad you were able to find one!

I have a MB Starwalker Rollerball for many years. Beautiful pen, but... the rollerball refills are worthless, unworthy of Montblanc. They always falter when starting to write. It always takes a few letters before they get going... both the black and the blue... There are better brands.
@cavan_goh12 күн бұрын
I agree… not sure but I’m assuming you’re using the normal rollerball refill in M. After switching over to the “LeGrand” rollerball refill but in F, the ink doesn’t skip for me regardless of poor quality paper. But I still agree that their ballpoints perform way better than their rollerballs in terms of not skipping the paper.

Montblanc receives shade from a lot of people but their pens are actually good. The 149 for me is a staple. A symbol of an important pen for important occasions. I went for the 146. The pen gave me a lot of trouble. But I fixed it and learned to enjoy it. Later on, maybe when I finish my PhD, I might go for the 149 just as a symbol and hope it writes nice. Until then, I’ll enjoy my jinhao x159🙏🏾 Nice video as always man! Keep it up. We really enjoy these!
@fizixguru10112 күн бұрын
I bought a Montblanc 146 and wasn't quite pleased with it, as it did not write well but over the years it got tamed and has now become my favourite since it does write better than all the pens I own and yes surprisingly X159 is too good I forget that it has a steel nib and is plastic body not the resin ( pun intended).... sharing your experience was elevating for me. Thanks
