An excerpt from Michael Urie's interview last year: "So uh, a crew mate tattled and told Vanessa that I was mimicking her. Vanessa said really? Then she went over to me and said: I've heard that you've been doing me. What can I do next for you to mimic me? You do me and I'll do your suggestion and then you can react upon that suggestion. Let's collaborate". That's why they've been so in sync most of scenes.
