Diablo Immortal was originally released on mobile though, so it wouldn't even be competing with PoE at all. And regardless of what you might think of the game, in terms of success Diablo Immortal probably made 10x the revenue of PoE. So its not a matter of if its a game, its a matter of do they share the same target audience. And the answer is no - different platforms and different monetization which attracts totally different audiences.

alright. i got this down. sea of thieves utilises just 1 FFT. looked through nvidia nsight. looking through the wave shapes, it looks more like JONSWAP spectrum and its repeating itself for around 10 or 20 seconds. about SSS , they talked about wave choppiness. which i believe is square magnitude of XZ plane of displacement map. because choppiness is determined by only XZ axis displacement. you wont get any choppiness with only Y axis. ( i work mainly in unity Y is the up axis ) so, length(displacementmap.xz); will do it i guess. also they combine it with worldspace height position. if you jump off the ship and swim, theres going to be a horizontal line on the sss, which i think because they are clamping the value under 0. they sample the displacement texture more than 1 time. because if you look at the SSS, its very noticable that they have smaller cascades. (you dont actually look for sss. you can just see that in the game. the same waves just tile over and over again. on some occasions its easily noticable.) they are sampling the same texture at least for 2 times, using smaller cascade data for SSS. and 1 time for only applying to normals ( they only use normals for reflection. nothing else btw. on lower graphics they dont use normals at all. just the sss. and foam.) sea of thieves doesnt conbine SSS with dot(light, viewdir) because if it did, you would only see SSS when facing through light. but thats not the case. so its a lie i guess. even if it is true, the effect is so low that its not noticable. maybe they add this to the choppinness thing so its more amplified on sunsets or whatever. about foam, they said they were progressively blurring it. which i now know is that, every frame it goes : jacobian = jacobian + ( jacobian * exp( decayrate) ). so they add jacobian on top of itself every frame but at the same time they make it disappear exponentially over time. they use different textures, where jacobian is near 1, they use high frequency one and blend between that with the bubbly foamish stylised texture there. float foam = jacobian * lerp(foamTex, highDetailTexture ,pow(jacobian ,2)) ; you can get the same effect by this. where the jacobian is closer to 1, its going to go use high frequency tex and blend between foam texture. then just add that to a color and return it. i'll come back if i figure more things out. see ya.

Not only he recognizes the trash that Diablo Immoral is, he also recognizes a good RPG when he sees one and understands when the community goes out to play said RPG when it releases even a their best player retention.

Want to make a sea of thieves ocean? Do this: Make the ocean, make the displacement, make the foam with a color ramp (higher on Z is foam, wave top). I don't know why they used the UV for world position. use world position for world position. Add normal buoyancy code like a normal person. For ship breaking and falling apart, use chaos style physics or carefully code each board of the ship to be destructable and replaceable (many ways to do this) Now you have a random displacement ocean, with foam, your ship is buoyant, and destructable. Last thing to do is code when ship takes on water = less buoyancy till none at all. EZ. UV maps for buoyancy? barbaric I say. They used this in some weird twisted way with raycasting for buoyancy im sure. But they also stated in one of their videos I watched a long time ago they had multiplayer syncing issues because the packets could not keep up with all the trash code likely. So do it the right way.

have I just watched a video on Sea of Thieves visuals? Yes. Does it help me in any way? Probably not. But it was still worth it. The "very cheap" after every other slide and the small details I will notice when playing
