Claire just shared the link to this performance, and it brings back such deep and fond memories of touring with The Claire Lynch Band. A wonderful arrangement born of our collaborative efforts spearheaded by Claire. It captures the magic and spooky vibe of Knopfler's fine composition - as moving to hear now as it was to play back in the day.

I had the honor of pickin' and hanging out with James several years ago in a woodshed environment . I played and sang Greycoat Soldier which Norman does an amazing job on. I felt inadequate, and stated that Norman probably wouldn't like it. James said Norman would be well pleased with my version. That made me feel very good. These people are pure country class.

The Blake's are getting up there in age from when I saw them once in late '70s. They are just such mellow folks, sort of like a fine, delicious old wine. I hope they can play on for many, many more years. They are a national treasure.

Nice version but no one sings it better than the song's writer John Prine. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kITci4hnjaZoqM0

It’s not about who does it better or best. Music is not a competition. It’s about taking something and making it your own. I love John Prine but this is a fantastic rendition. Josh is one of the most talented musicians around today.

Thank you so incredibly much for this. It's sad this is the longest video that's available of this performance. Merlefest needs to step up and release this show to the public. This show is a national treasure and deserves to be preserved and made available to the masses.

absolutely the very best singer to do this song I rewrote some of it to make it Eastern Kentucky because that is were I lived the song and watched as they killed the mountains. I am going on 80 and I hope I can learn this one good enough for someone to ask me to sing it .

BTW, a "Geordie" is the name given to any person who comes from the English city of Newcastle. Oh yes, and the "Tyne" is the river that runs through Newcastle.
