Hey, how about the winter? Do they manage the cold like other ducks? And how many eggs are they laying? I've read that not as many as chickens. But I'm considering raising them for meat.
@SimplehappylifeinFinland
@SimplehappylifeinFinland Ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for asking. They stayed rather outside than went to their coop even it was -25 degrees in celsius in the winter. 😁 Known for their hardiness and tolerance for cold even comparing to the other duck breeds.
@SimplehappylifeinFinland
@SimplehappylifeinFinland Ай бұрын
They lay 1 egg per each per day in spring-summer season, if they are not brooding. In autumn and winter at least in here they were having an egg break (which is good and well needed), we don´t give them any extra light so that might also affect to that.

Always love watching your videos. Fig tree is great. Olives in Italy usually are picked between September and October( it depends a little bit if it's in the south or north). In my area Rhubarb is perennial and I have only ever started it from crowns; now I will be on the look out for seeds to economically add to my patch! For now I only have herbs started inside and have cabbage and carrots outside but those are a risk as we still have a chance of more or deeper freeze than they can tolerate. The early warm weather has me gambling. Happy to be growing!

Thank you for a 'heart-warming' video. We have -13C now. I'd love to ask a question - do you bake in the kitchen oven. I have a very similar and have found that the temperature is not so high in mine. Cooking - yes but baking not so good.

Hi, thank you very much for the nice comment. We cook a lot on the wood stove, but I haven't done baking with it yet. It would require focusing on the matter and the temperatures, and it is something I would like to focus on and learn. We have an electric oven, and so far I've done the baking with it. I have baked gingerbread, pizzas and the like with a wood-burning oven earlier and it worked very well - each oven is of course different, and requires learning how to operate your "own oven".

Wow it looks so beautiful there but also very cold too. At least you are bundled up warm when you go outside. I know the animals are excited to see you with the food and new bedding. Do the chickens still lay eggs when it's so cold outside? I know you showed in one of you video's that is stays warm in the coop but that was before it got really cold there. Do you eat the duck eggs too or just the chicken eggs? What do you do in your break times - Read books - watch video's - watch TV. I like to crochet and listen to music when I'm not busy with house chores or shopping chores. Be safe and take care. Blessings to you

Yes they do but not so much than in spring-summer. Their coop is insulated and we use deep litter method in there, so they have +7 degrees in Celsius at the moment, even when it is so cold outside. We do eat duck eggs also, but they are not laying in winter and probably will start again in spring. We do normal things, like reading books, watch movies and other KZbin channels from our laptop (we don´t have TV, no need for that) and also normal chores takes a lot more time in this kind of coldness, and it it constant work keeping the house warm. Also dogs needs love & attention and our junior dog training. Take care and thanks for asking. Best regards.

I would visit my Great Grandmother in West Virginia where she had only a hand pump in the house for water and no electricity. She lived that way all her life so it was not so hard for her but it would take some time for me to be able to work with no running water in the house. I think it's awesome how you can make this home work for you and your family. Be safe and Blessing to you.

Thank you. And thanks for asking. Yes we do have special winter tires in Finland, and you need to use them from November till snow and ice is gone. Snow is a normal thing here and it doesn't stop any normal things here. The roads are plowed regularly, so visits to the store etc. go without any problems. All the best for you too.
