This experiment is highly interesting. Thank you very much! Keep in mind, it only gives us a (kind of) near field measurement. VHF/UHF Signals go several paths and are reflected in unpredictable ways. Each reflection causes a change in polarity. So this near field experiment is not what you might experience when operating in real life. The essential is, you will receive better on VHF/UHF using a circular polarized antenna.
@petermiles6557

Thanks! As you pointed out, this measurement is not as straightforward as it might seem, and multi-path reflections, as you mentioned, are indeed a challenge. My initial attempts involved placing the antennas much farther apart, which caused significant issues with reflected signal paths. The advice I received was to position the antennas as close as possible to mitigate the effects of reflections. The separation distance needs to be beyond the induction field, which is dominant only out to about half a wavelength (from memory), and ideally around 2 to 3 wavelengths. In this instance, I positioned them at 3 wavelengths, or about 2 meters apart. I'm still of the view that greater separation would yield better results. I plan to use bow-tie antennas, which are directional and can reduce nuisance reflections while providing predictable gain if constructed well. I also intend to take measurements higher above the ground to further improve accuracy. That said, I think there are far too many claims about antenna performance on the internet that aren't well-supported. This is my attempt to raise the standard. Watch this space-there’s more to come! Any advice or constructive criticism is most welcome.

Very interesting and maybe a good candidate for the SatNOGS projects. I wonder how this would compare to the eggbeater antenna and how it would react to a ground plane being placed underneath it.

Thanks for your video. I thought the cross pol measurement of -28dB of your reference dipoles was excellent confirmation of your setup. I am very interested in the cross pol loss when your reference dipoles are at 45degs.
@petermiles6557
@petermiles6557 18 күн бұрын
I probably shouldn't say this without measuring it, but based on experience, the loss increases quite sharply as you approach 90 degrees, while there is only a very modest loss at 45 degrees.

Great work. To lower freq to 440MHz would you lengthen elements say by 5mm to 725mm? What type of N connector is that and where can a VK7 get one? I guess there is a 5mm nut under the as well over the smaller centre conductor plate fixing in place?
@petermiles6557
@petermiles6557 Ай бұрын
The element lengths are interesting in that they are longer than a full wavelength and I agree that an extra 5mm would place the antenna in the centre of the band. Standard N connector. Yes; correct there is a nut below the upper plate.

I'm rebuilding a 18ele 440mhz homebrew yagi. I'm not fully seasoned on this, but I'm using a high grade of RG6 here to feed most of my antennas here..HF/VHF and UHF with no problems. Question is how would using 75 ohm coax effect the length of the coax matching stub....assuming it's still needed? I appreciate your video....shows me much I needed to see, for my driven element is needing complete restoration, and it's director is gone. Thanks.
@petermiles6557
@petermiles6557 2 ай бұрын
My understanding is that you need to have approximately 1 wavelength (per the video) of a different impedance coax. 125 ohm coax is commonly used however in my case and in some commercial folded dipoles 75 ohm is sufficient in a 50 ohm system. Also I have an alternate 'J' dipole driven element that I have used on the 5 element Yagi that may be of interest. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaSYi5SQobGrnbMsi=zLFmS4h47eKxC4rF And web page: vk6ysf.com/yagi_J_Driven_Element_20250715.html

Really cool Peter! I though that a J-pole driven element was a good idea, but was unable to find much info until now about how to employ it. I love the hose clamp idea with adjustable elements. The NanoVNA sure makes doing this a lot easier. I really like the use of a receive antenna and s21 measurements for comparison. Using flat metal also gives us the possibility of using old scrap material. Take care and 73- W1RMD

... a random passerby, if you watched this video. never do as shown. the temperature gradient, between the melting temperature of the solder and the massive copper of the printed circuit board, can "fry" the silicon component. a regular soldering iron is enough.
