Hi @loli1521, we do send patients home in a special padded shoe to wear for a small period of time immediately following the procedure; however, the shoe is much smaller than a full boot. I had a curly toe issue where my ring toes (both) curled inward and under my middle toes. 2018 I went to the VA (Veteran Affairs) and the surgeon did a joint fusion (none of it was explained to me) or that's what I'm now led to believe given the research I've done over the past months. I wasn't aware there were so many ways to address that condition. I had it in both ring toes. \Anyways years later, the left foot ring toe has curled back most of the way, and is aching on and off. Bothering me now as I type this at 7:00am. What do I do? I've been up all night seeing if a surgery exists to reverse the process, or add flexibility back to my toe. Only the left foot ring toe, since the right foot ring toe is relatively straight and I don't recall ever feeling pain in it. I have lost flexibility in both toes, a near complete loss. They do not bend at the joint they are just hard and straight- hence after my recent research I think he fused the joints. I had pins in my toes for several weeks after the surgery, got them done at the same time. I want to fix what went wrong with my left toe, and no longer trust my Veteran Affairs hospital, the surgeon is still active there and I have had two appointments so far this year. I may be paranoid but I just can't trust them unless I know exactly what treatment to dictate to them. I'm seeing there are at least 2 possible ways to address this: 1) toe arthroplasty 2) toe joint replacement surgery Any thoughts?

Hi Qliphirot, you are correct that it is much less invasive than other surgical options available, but the surgery itself is actually quite non-invasive. Our surgeon creates as few incisions as possible to complete the procedure and none of them are larger than a keyhole. The local anesthesia used prevents any feeling during the procedure and most patients are able to drive themselves home after surgery!

Hi there, G.! Had to bring Doc. Sullivan in for this one! Here's what he had to say "Tendons ultimately control all the joints, their position, and their function. The ultimate cause of a bunion is a tendon imbalance across the big toe joint. For this reason sometimes it is necessary to lengthen a problematic/overly tight tendon in order to rebalance and realign a joint. The tendon will heal and retain its function, just in a lengthened and more appropriate tension. An easy example of this is a “trigger finger”. The flexor tendon in a finger has inappropriately tightened up causing a deformity in the position of the digit. By lengthening the tendon you are able to straighten the digit to improve its alignment and function."
