I had a bunionectomy done years ago - WAY more invasive than this. 2" incision on top of my foot - cut/reshaped joint - pin inserted. Done on both feet at same time. About a year later, 1 pin started working it's way out, almost poking thru the skin. Be sure to wear proper ortho shoes or the bunion will return.

Hi Qliphirot, you are correct that it is much less invasive than other surgical options available, but the surgery itself is actually quite non-invasive. Our surgeon creates as few incisions as possible to complete the procedure and none of them are larger than a keyhole. The local anesthesia used prevents any feeling during the procedure and most patients are able to drive themselves home after surgery!

Hey Benjamin! Here's what our surgeon, Dr Sullivan had to say. The soft tissue release that’s done in this video is not necessary in all cases and depends on a patient's specific deformity. The majority of our minimally invasive surgeries do not require this. When the soft tissue is lengthened, it’s done for a reason, being that it’s too tight. It will always heal, but at a more appropriate length/tension.

Hey Diana! Had to check in with the doc on this one. Here's what our surgeon, Dr. Jordan Sullivan had to say: Cutting a wedge into the proximal phalanx does indeed shorten the bone by a small margin, however by leaving a hinge (the apex of the wedge), the length is only lost on one side of the phalanx which causes the toe to “tip” or deviate in the desired direction. Our procedure allows us to correct the soft tissue alignment at the big toe joint by altering the direction of pull of the tendons crossing the joint. Long story short, the toe will not appear noticeably longer or shorter after surgery.

Great question LL! Bunions form as a result of internal pressure within the foot. When muscles, joints, and tendons become misaligned the subsequent pressure can form a bony mass along the big toe joint that we call a bunion. It’s possible that both genetic factors and lifestyle choices can contribute to the formation of bunions. So if you have stubbed your toe repeatedly and thus, have caused damage to the muscles, joints and tendons, that could certainly contribute to causing a bunion.

Hi there, G.! Had to bring Doc. Sullivan in for this one! Here's what he had to say "Tendons ultimately control all the joints, their position, and their function. The ultimate cause of a bunion is a tendon imbalance across the big toe joint. For this reason sometimes it is necessary to lengthen a problematic/overly tight tendon in order to rebalance and realign a joint. The tendon will heal and retain its function, just in a lengthened and more appropriate tension. An easy example of this is a “trigger finger”. The flexor tendon in a finger has inappropriately tightened up causing a deformity in the position of the digit. By lengthening the tendon you are able to straighten the digit to improve its alignment and function."

Hey Sun City! The only way to permanently get rid of a bunion is through surgery. So while it's not completely necessary, surgery can relieve a lot of pain and discomfort in daily life caused by bunions. We often have patients who try bunion pads, wider shoes, and other short-term solutions but eventually, they come to us for minimally invasive surgery as a long-term solution.

Some opt to remove them because they can't wear certain shoes and don't want to be limited in shoe choice by their bunions. Some opt to remove them purely for cosmetics because they don't like the way their feet look.
