Just curious on why you would hook up a midi controller to your Roland? Does the Alesis have any controls on it or is all the information just being received from the Roland? And if so then why even have it? Thanks!

Hi Jake, thanks for watching. It’s a Keytar, so I can grab it for some songs and be mobile on stage. You can midi map it to use any of the controls to control the Roland

Hope you and the band play some songs besides the given ones from Asia. How about something from XXX and Omega, not just the first 2 or 3 albums. Looking forward to seeing you up close in Spartanburg!

Hey @Ludwiczek7734 thanks for watching. I use two CME Widi Masters ( one in the DS for midi in, and one in the Keytar for midi out ) which work on Bluetooth and work great. You can buy them on Amazon and numerous music retailers.

I appreciate your reflections on the instrument. Thank you for making this video. So often we see KZbin content only on the latest models. I know that Hammond has made some improvements on their latest models, especially on the Leslie sims, but the SK1/SK2 is still a good instrument. You can get under the hood and customize it quite a bit. I installed Jim Alfredson’s tonewheel (from the Hammond site) set too. That is a worthy customization. TBH, I am not one of those guys who is constantly seduced into updating an instrument every couple of years. If someone has the cash to do that, good on ‘em. That’s probably easier to justify when a person is NOT married. 😁 I tend to get a bit more bang for the buck by updating my playing skills, more so than by updating my instruments. I agree that the main reason to own one of these is to play organ. I always considered myself an organist first, so the SK2 became my workhorse. I also agree that many of the “other” sounds in the SK2 could be better, but they are not unusable. When I would just play a small stage in some local blues bar, I could always make do with using this one keyboard. The acoustic piano is probably not as good as the one in your Roland and the limited range can be a pain when you play a boogie woogie thing, but with a careful touch and a bit of eq, I could make it work and never got any negative comments from anyone, including the other musicians. I actually like the acoustic piano more than the plastic sounding Wurli. Clavs are good. I have a Clav, but that stays home. The accordions are good enough for a Zydeco tune or two. I have used one of the basses if I am covering left hand bass. I would not use any of the winds, but with a bit of blending and some imagination, I suspect that someone could get any of the sounds to work in certain contexts. One workaround that I sometimes did in those smaller space gigs if I wanted better non-organ sounds was to bring an iPad or a Motif rack. One of my ten “favourites” is a patch that puts organ on one manual and sets the second one as a midi controller so that I could play the external sounds. I do play the SK2 through a Leslie 147 at home, but for gigs I route the organ through a Ventilator and the other sounds are routed to an independent channel. I have used the SK’s internal Leslie, but I find the Ventilator to be more satisfying. If you like to put the Leslie in the brake setting, however, nothing beats the real cabinet, IMHO. Thanks again for your content.

@piktormusic2538 Thank you so much for watching and for your great comments. Great to hear how you’re using the SK. I’ve had a few people tell me know they use some of the other sounds so will find the time to look deeper into those.

We got caught out with the internal one at the beginning and could not connect! 🙈 I just use one single Kronos 73 worn lots of splits and layers. Two mackie tops and one 18" sub. All running in ears.

If it works it works. When my band is not playing i run sound for other bands. If enough people see your post they will tell you things like don’t use the alto speakers and It’s never a good idea to run sound from stage but a lot of us have to. I run sound from the stage. in my band I have a p16 With only the inputs of left right. I use high quality in-ear buds (1200.00) and this way I can hear volume changes or if somebody does a little break out solo and make changes. Having the guitar players go out front to try to adjust volume is probably not the most desirable and things will change as the night goes on which may be problematic doing it that way. Like I said I run sound for bands when we’re not playing but for example I’ve gone through five different sound guys even with the last one lasting 10 years, but they never stay lol. But it seems like what you’re doing is working and the bottom line is if it does more power to any band that does it. The biggest thing is to enjoy playing music and make people happy. Enjoyed your video , Keep doing what you’re doing

Love the run down. I'm surprised you haven't all gone to IEM's to clean up the extra stage noise from the wedges. It's a small venue issue mostly but would also be less to load in. I'm a drummer and love my IEM's for ease of use, for sound blocking of guitarists who won't give up their amps on small stages, and to help hear the right mix. I use them for either my Vdrums or my Acoustic sets and love getting my own mix just right with no competition from neighboring wedges on small stages. Keep on rockin!

I work songs out exactly as you do. I could read music at school but never Kept it up so for me it’s more by ear now. KZbin has made life so much easier. We also have a XR18 and i record our gigs and rehearsals with the band going through it, then take out my keyboards at home and this allows me to rehearse with the band without them being there. Nice to see a lot of familiar venues in your vlogs.👍
