Well, I learned it by ear and part of the arrangement is mine. I suggest playing a lot in open D and searching for what notes and chords feel right to you. It takes time and experimentation but it will come with time!

No, there are 14 fret versions as well as cutaway on recent models. This is a 2017 National M1 Deepbody.

Love this song. Real fine mandolin slide, cord structure, single notes & smooth vocals. John, i'm gona break out my gibson1916 a-4 & apply a slide. Tks for a great performance & inspiration thru a new door.

John, profound truth, delivered in rockin blues, slide cording & single note rhythm's. Images of soot covered miners, steel mill heat, low pay, drinking together & talkin better days coming. Feet tapping to much needed up beat tempo and a fiddle player jumps in. Thank you for a fine version.

@@jalex7689 It's an old railroad work song. The first known recorded version was 1933 from a Tennessee prison. I first heard Ry Cooder's version on Paradise and Lunch.
