Here in Canada we have very limited access to pond filtration products compared to what's available in the UK and I have never seen a multi-bay filters for sale however I am familiar with how the multi-bay filters function so can hopefully help. Compared to Eazy Pods multi-bay filters have the ability to accept a significantly large volume of different types of media. Most multi-bays start with a vortex component followed by a number of different chambers to house brushes, Jap matting, etc. all of which can be very effective filtration and depending on the media chosen an remove fines well. The down side with multi-bays is the fact they require substantial intervention to clean and the large footprint requiring a lot of space to install. Eazy Pods on the other hand have a small footprint so therefore take up much less space for installation and cleaning is quick and simple. Eazy Pods work very well although having limited space for media they do remove fines quite well. I believe a filter like the kockney bay 5000 and a basic Eazy Pod both retail in the range of £465.00 with price increases with extras such as UV's, media included. Hopefully this helps a little. I suggest you speak to a trusted koi retailer and other koi keepers in your area to get their recommendation.

So you've spent all that money on 2 easypods and yet you still feel the need to clean your pond water more? I have 9000 litres of pond water, heavily stocked run on a small homemade particle filter comprising brushes, foam and fine fibre matting, operating at 6000ltr/hr then a bog filter containing pumice & pea gravel (250kg) which operates at 2000ltr/hr. My whole pond, pump & filtration cost less than £250 and I'm getting 0 ammonia & nitrates and plants in my pond and bog filter are dealing with nitrates & phosphates. My water is crystal clear too. I have 16 fish from 30cm to 70cm and spend 10 minutes twice a week cleaning my particle filter and 30 minutes per year to drain and flush my bio-filter. 50+ years of pond keeping & my scientific background within the industry have taught me natural is the best way to go. Moving bed filters are scientifically proven to be less effective than static media in bacterial terms, also flow rates of 2000ltr/HR or even less are better than much higher flow rates in bacterial terms. It's also pointless to aerate bio media, if there is enough dissolved oxygen in the water to keep your fish healthy then there is more than enough for your bacteria to thrive. In modern pond keeping there is too much false information out there perpetuated by equipment manufacturers etc making people spend loads of money when in fact it can be done much cheaper and more effectively simply by following nature. I'm not criticising you as an individual, more the industry of which I was a part of for many years where sales gimmicks have taken over from good practices in more recent years.

Thanks very much for your comments. I always find it interesting to hear what people have done to filter their ponds. I agree that current day manufacturers tend to overstate what their products can do. To set the record straight I purchased my first Eazy Pod about 20 years ago brand new and my second one used, complete with air pump, about 15 years ago. I'm continually adjusting how it fits into my overall filtration as I enjoy that part of the hobby. In addition to the Eazy Pods I do use diy filtration quite successfully. My indoor pond is filtered entirely by diy filtration with the exception of a recently converted swimming pool filter. I always tell people I speak to about filtration to do what works best for them. If your set up works for you as you've noted that's great and I would never tell you to change it. Mine works for me and that's what I care about. Thankfully my koi, some of which i've had for over 20 years, are all doing well which is my goal. Hopefully you'll find some of my other videos of interest. I'd love to see a video of your pond and filter setup.

@mykoiobsession
@mykoiobsession 14 күн бұрын
Setting up a similar system to mine wouldn't be all that difficult and for the most part would be dependant on the type of piping/tubing used. The main component would be the three way valve of the appropriate size, in my case 1.5". I would suggest using rigid pvc or abs pipe if at all possible as the fittings are readily available. I use the pool hose as it was much less expensive however the fittings can be a little difficult to find. As for the blower a good strong wet/dry vac with a blower function would work well. As you saw in the video following about two minutes of air agitation of the media the water went from disgusting to crystal clear. I'm over the moon with the end result despite the leak issue. 👍🏻

I strongly suspect that such an Eromonas infection is due to anaerobic bacteria from immature pond water, as well as frailty from the effects of improper feeding due to poor body shape 11:28 (unwanted fat on the chest rather than back meat), which is common outside Japan.

I don't believe it to be bacterial but rather a tumor due to the rapid growth over the past few months and feel of the tissue (very firm) once excised. The pond has been running since late April (my summer outdoor pond) with partial water changes every two days and lots of filtration so no water quality issues. Feeding takes place three times a day. None of the other fish have shown any signs of infection and have followed the same routine for years with my oldest koi being 23 years old purchased as a nisai. All of the fish are moved indoors to a 2000 gal US pond for the winter. That pond is kept running all year round and currently houses 2 sturgeon with one approximately 36 inches and the other 28 inches so the water is always mature when the koi are moved indoors.

They are self cleaning and do an amazing job but unfortunately are very expensive to purchase especially here in Canada if you can even find one for sale. Unlike the UK where they are readily available I know of only one dealer in Canada who sell them. Pricing starts in the $8000 range as opposed to $2500 in the UK.

It's the Eazy Pod sieves that are making the water as clear as it is. I still have to clean them every three hours but it is worth it. Basket turned out better that I thought and I'm please that I now have it but I really hope I don't have to use it too often. As for the dorsal growth/sore I'm not sure what's causing it. It doesn't seem to bother her but it has destroyed a huge chunk of her dorsal. I don't recall if the peroxide bubbled or not when I treated her a few months ago. This time I'm planning on doing one more round of trimming followed by a higher concentration of the liquid nitrogen followed by a PP paste. Fingers and toes crossed that will make a difference. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🙏🏻

3:48 As you mentioned, floating baskets are a commercial material used in Japanese auction houses, which was appropriated and popularized by our British predecessors, and almost no Japanese hobbyist has a regular supply of them. I agree with your idea to create a replacement for them, as I have been concerned about the sight of large KOIs being carelessly stuffed into them because their sink depths are too shallow for the use we want.

Thanks for your comment. @mykoiobsession
@mykoiobsession Ай бұрын
If you don't mind me asking, where are you located? I ask because things like bog filters function differently in the UK for example than here in Canada primarily due to the weather. As for cleaning out the fines before reaching the Eazy Pods due to the limited space in my filter pit it would be difficult to include anything else. The Eazy Pods feed directly from the bottom drain so they pick up everything. My upflow filters capture a lot of fines however they are also feed via the bottom drain after passing through the Eazy Pods. On a more positive note now that I have reduced the flow rate through the filters (and the fact the sieves have been in operation for a while) cleaning of the sieves is only necessary once every 3 1/2 to 4 hours.
@rigidstonerottweiler

I am just north of Toronto. Can you not filter it after those filters? I know you said that the water will flow over those filters if you do go over the required time to clean them but that seems like something that needs constant cleaning in order to work properly. If you do have the time then that’s fine but if you have a nap then the filters won’t really do anything. That’s an amazing filter system you have going there. I just have 3 pressure filters on my pond. Can’t afford those fancy ones plus my 10 tanks inside the house too.

Thanks. I prefer the doitsu varieties over the scaled ones as to me the skin quality just seems so much nicer. I'll know better at the end of the season if I made the right choice.

Looking good mate, hopefully they put on some good size now they are in the main pond

Considering the size difference between the new koi and their new pond mates I'm hoping they get enough food to put on that growth. I'll be doing a measure up in the fall to see how things have gone.

@@mykoiobsession as there's a few smaller ones together it should give them feeding confidence 🤞

Thanks Marek. I wish I had the funds to buy higher quality larger koi but the budget doesn't all for that. On the other hand buying small and watching them grow and develop can be very rewarding as you know.

Both the koi and my neighbours might collapse from shock if they saw me in a bathing suit.🤣

I am sure that showa will put on a lot of size especially if it stays warm I like all three.. last one will be a rocket 🚀 to catch out of the big pond . Its nice to see them all swim together. I love that ochiba as you know

For now the 'staying warm' part is not an issue. Hopefully they'll get enough food considering the size difference between them and their new pond mates.
