Yes it's safe and many expats live in the capital of Dili, Timor-Leste. You just need to take the normal precautions as you would anywhere else, for example, being cautious of traveling alone after dark etc.

@@adamconstanza I flew in from Bali after spending a few weeks traveling through East Java.i had arranged accommodation for the first 3days after that I arranged with owner for me to move to a smaller room at quite a bit cheaper $25.Aus.a night,they lace was very clean,I was the only one staying at the compound,he said I past years it was full with NGO’s.but those days had past.I had a fold up bike with me,tried to keep myself occupied by riding out that back road to Hara,found a good bakery with coffee,generally I made sure that I got out every day ,ate local food on the side of the road ,I could cook my dinner at my accommodation.from Dili flew to Darwin,from there back home to Perth

I'm actually not too sure. We stayed at a dive resort and my friends did all their dives through them. We did hire a local boat for a couple of hours to go and see a dugong too, however I can't remember the cost. Definitely worth it though.

@@adamconstanza yes its amazing planes and vehicles are still there relic of past on eastern side of island prisoners used to unload stuff for Japanese when they were building airstrip.

My friend that took us said the planes used to be hidden in the jungle but they were moved a few years back into one place under a shelter. Shame really, it would have been fascinating to see them where they originally lay.

It's fairly high compared to other destinations in Southeast Asia as they use USD and things like flights, accommodation etc are quite pricey.
