Those little scissors recommended aren't faring well on Amazon, but the file has great reviews. Can you recommend any other scissors for getting into the dewclaw loop, especially for black nails? I appreciate the video!

Thank u so much for your feedback! You and Desi are clearly lucky to have each other! 🥰 For my Coton baths, I usually use Envirogroom (this hypoallergenic shampoo dilutes 32:1): amzn.to/4eCtk9D. For rinse off conditioner, I use Berry Silk: amzn.to/3TD02Q5, but a great leave on conditioner is Zymox: amzn.to/3MX4up6. For sprays, I use The Stuff for conditioning damp coats, and BioGroom Argan Oil spray for dry brushing: amzn.to/3XTHeOX, amzn.to/4gtjwQS. Hope that helps and good luck with that gorgeous Coton coat! 🐾

I have been grooming since 1991, did mobile grooming in California, and now live in Florida. I am trying my best to start a house call grooming service. I'm not sure why a customer would choose a house call instead of a grooming van service. I'm having a really slow start.............so I'm not sure if this will work out. :(

Omgosh, I am so glad u reached out! I know it's hard to break out on your own (trust me, oh, I know!), but pls do not lose faith. Grooming is always in demand, and good groomers with a passion for the craft are very desirable! Moving to a new location is tough. but if you connect on Nextdoor or local FB groups, people will respond! Home grooming is much more personal than Mobile, and people love it. Yes, it's hard on the back, and u have to adjust to every situation, but I promise, if you are positive and professional (and u are organized with the right equipment), oh, and charge appropriately (higher than salon, just a smidgen lower than corporate Mobile), u will do great! Pls keep me posted and I mean that! If u have the right attitude, skills, and professionalism, grooming is always a winner. Sending you all my best vibes! 🥰

I love your comment, thank u! Yes, technically, every nail trim should go as close to the quick as possible! But if every groomer attempted that for every nail trimmed (avg groomer cuts over 30k nails/year), asking a human to do so without error on such a scale would cause a bloody mess and traumatize the dogs. So after being responsible for well over a million dog nails trimmed, and fielding calls from upset owners if any nail is too short, the philosophy is to get close to the vein but leave a "French tip", thus a few millimeters of buffer. And since nail trims usually terrify pet owners, I want to comfort them by stating that cutting a little off is better than not trimming the nail at all. Hope that explains, and thanks again - great subject! 🐾

Hi! I tried looking around on the internet but I can’t seem to find a good soap to use for my dogs eye crustys. His get really hard and I didn’t realize soon enough but I want something to help break down or make the crustys slide off easier. I was wondering what you would recommend? Thank you!

Aw, a baby Coton! How fun! I love that you're keeping your pup in a natural style - it is such a great look and "correct" for the breed! OK, so for the work, you'll need a good slicker brush, a metal comb with different teeth spacing, and a dematting tool. I honestly use like 12 different brushes in my practice, but if I had to pick one, the most versatile is the miracle coat: amzn.to/4e6zjU7. As for combs, I use a few as well, but the basic Andis fine/coarse comb is an affordable and trustworthy option: amzn.to/3MQ2HSH. Now for a dematting tool, I just switched over to a more expensive but safer option than the traditional dematting rake, worth the cost: amzn.to/4diUXUc. Hope that helps and pls let me know if u have any more questions on your grooming journey! 😊

Hi, indeed, the whole nail grinding idea began with the good ol' Dremel! The basic sanding band grit usually works fine, but if you're working with more fragile or delicate nails/claws, some of the softer grit stones that usually come in the basic pack work great. Hope that helps; happy grooming! 🐾😊

Thanks you for this video! I am researching dryers to groom my own female Samoyed at home. For this breed, do you find the Flying Pig to be suitable enough or is the K9-ii better?
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming 10 күн бұрын
Hi Dylan, great question! The K9's are considerably more powerful than the Flying Pig models, but I can assure you that the Flying Pig has ample power for a Samoyed, as long as you use the reducing nozzle. Now if $$ is no object, the K9-II or III will cut your drying time and really help blow out dead coat better, but I personally now only use two Flying Pigs in my salon (my K9-II finally broke after 13 years) and I groom all sorts of hairy beasts. Hope that helps, and thanks for your comment! 😊

Hi Milan, thank you for your insightful comment! Indeed, the Wire Fox Terrier should be handstripped to maintain the color, texture, and composition of the coat. And although I handstrip in my practice, many pet owners cannot afford the service (and many pets do not have the disposition to sit for stripping), so instead of letting the dog's coat become unruly, we use a clipper to manage their pet coats. Reality vs. Perfection. But I am with you, 100%, if I had a magic wand, every wire-haired breed would be handstripped correctly. Thanks for your comment!

Gina thanks for the video using the Oster Gentle Paws grinder as there are not specific instructions on the outside packaging to allow a purchaser to determine if this product is what they want to use. So far I have just been clipping my dogs nails but I wanted to begin using a grinder as well and now since I’ve seen your video I feel confident in using the Oster. I have large dogs and have always not only tied the leash to a post to keep them close while clipping their nails as you are in the video but also I always put a cage style rubber muzzle on them to prevent any possible biting if they get scared or too uncomfortable. This helps me feel confident too be able to get the job done more quickly and efficiently and reduce stress time on my dogs too. And of course I always give a treat and praise after. Thanks for the video! The demonstration is just what I was looking for!

I'm new to this breed and a first time.dog owner. It was suggested I brush her with a steel type brush but I find it pulls her coat to much and she doesn't like it. What about a soft nylon brush? She didn't seem to be bothered by it. I don't want any part of grooming to be uncomfortable for her. She my baby
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming 20 күн бұрын
Hi Stephen, I love it, "She my baby!" 🥰 OK, real deal, you can prevent any pain to your Poodle as long as you don't allow the hair to snarl together - which it will try to do naturally! Once snarled, it becomes painful to brush. For a pet Poodle, you want a slicker brush and a metal comb, see vid here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHLadIh_aM-Cq7Msi=Z31ri54Z4rWEHUJg. Using a soft nylon brush may offer a good massage, but it's not separating each stand of hair from each other (which is what equals no pain.) The comb is the key! If u just combed through your Poodle daily (I know, extreme, but we comb our own hair daily), you'll never have to worry. And if daily combing is too much (it is for me and my Poodle, and I'm a pro with a salon in my house, lol!), you need to get a brush in there to help. It's a process, for sure! And if too much, please be open to keeping her in a short style. It's no big deal, and they look adorable! Good luck in your dog ownership journey! You're clearly going to do great! 🐾

Plugging will hurt them
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming 22 күн бұрын
Hi Tahira, I am so glad you are concerned - we all should be. Ear hair plucking is not for all breeds, but for some dogs, your veterinarian will recommend keeping the canal free of hair to prevent ear infections - which are VERY painful. If done right for the right dog and for the right reasons, it is not painful and helps prevent serious problems. If you have any questions about your dog, ask your vet! Thanks for your comment!

For most poodles and doodles it's required. I have two standard poodles. One has very fine hair and I don't need to do hers as often but I do need to keep it clean. The other poodle has a very coarse very curly hair in his ear who needs to be plucked every couple weeks or so. If you don't because poodle ears are so heavy and their hair can be really thick then they don't have the right ventilation into the ear and that leads to a moist warm environment where they can get an infection. Both of my dogs will lay down and let me do it it doesn't hurt them and I'm sure it actually feels better in the long run because they don't have that long curly hair deep down in their ear canal which is making them itch

Hi Jennie! Your question makes me think that you're working with a very young or very old dog. 🥰 If working with a pup, sure, a sanitary trim will minimize the messes as they learn to squat properly (they usually do!). And for our old girls (I have one and we love her, but she makes mistakes), the sanitary trim also helps. So yes, cleaning up in that region is a good idea, no matter the age. Hope that explains it a bit, and I'm sending virtual support while you conquer your pee pee problem! 🐾🤭

Thank you for this, its nice to know that there's more than onne way to detangle/dematting. This past week has been my first in an intensive practical dog grooming course, where we mostly work with toy poodles. I REALLY struggle when it comes to dematting, among other things. The problem comes when such a small poodle twists and turns as if its life depends on it, (the blow dryer is the major trigger of most dogs) and in the grooming salon where I’m learning, they don’t use harnesses on the table-the dogs have to stay loose. It’s an expensive grooming salon that places a lot of importance on the cut and doing a good job, but it seems too risky to have a dog that struggles so much and wants to jump off the table. I try to stay calm and hold them gently but firmly (finding the balance is very difficult, and I hate holding dogs tightly, especially when they’re small), but it was impossible, especially since I had to work on the poodle’s coat with the blow dryer on my shoulder, a slicker brush in one hand, and holding the dog with the other. And working on the face is just impossible. I had to take a moment to cry. Another problem is when you’ve already straightened the poodle’s hair, and you try to pass the metal comb through to detangle it. When it doesn’t go through easily, (even with dematterrs, and matt breakers) I find it hard to gauge the right amount of force needed to detangle since it’s impossible not to tug, and almost all the poodles end up snapping, sometimes biting, or screaming due to the discomfort or pain. I know they can be very dramatic, but I also know the comb can hurt when it pulls (I would scream too, lol). Additionally, in this grooming salon, they have a hectic pace and work with a considerable number of dogs, so you have to be fast, efficient, and do it right, without a single knot. Every time a dog screams or snaps, it’s like a jumpscare for me; I reflexively pull my hands away, and my heart races. It’s my third day, and that’s normal, but I feel the pressure to get used to it as soon as possible. I know the key is to stay calm since dogs are extremely sensitive to our emotions, but I can’t seem to do it. Any advice?
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming 25 күн бұрын
Hi Isabele, I am so sorry that you are experiencing such stress while grooming! After reading your comment, I want you to know that what is happening is not your fault in any way - you've got a few key elements that are stacked against your success. 1) Not using grooming loops is very difficult and unsafe. Most dogs understand that when looped on a table, it's grooming time and they behave better. Your salon may be marketing no loops as some kind of optics to look safer or more humane, but the reality is that it makes everything less safe. Just a suggestion, they don't need to loop around the neck, they can use a loop under one armpit across the chest to at least have this very critical grooming tool. I know you may not have any control over this, but I want you to rest assured that you've been given a tougher job than it should be. 2) Dogs typically do not snap at the groomer as much as you're describing, so they are definitely telling you that something is not right. As you progress in grooming, you'll be able to assess which mats can be "crunched" loose with your thinners, which ones can be shaved out without affecting their look, and which ones can be de-matted or brushed out by holding the root of the hair and picking through the mats without the dogs feeling it. I'm hoping that you have a senior groomer or instructor there for guidance, and what I would suggest is next time you are prepping a Poodle and are blow drying it, call your instructor over, show them the matting using the blow dryer, and then ask them for guidance on the best way to tackle each section. (Side note, we're releasing a video tomorrow with a review of a new de-matting tool which you may find helpful - keep an eye out!) 3) Does your salon not provide stand dryers? You should be able to de-mat while drying sections with your hands free. Sure, the hose comes into play for the overall drying process, but I always sit down for de-matting and use my stand dryer, moving it from section to section as I work. This is a pretty standard operating procedure, so I would bring it up to your manager or teacher. If they don't have stand dryers, you can look at a bendable grooming arm with a hose clamp. This is the one I have: amzn.to/3XoDaGa 4) Speed in grooming is something that groomers learn through time. It's like learning to play an instrument - sure, you can find little shortcuts along the way, but nothing replaces the motor memory that you develop after grooming for years. And don't let anyone make you feel bad for not being fast enough! That will come in time. Most of my students have started with 2 dogs per day, and then have worked up to 4 dogs usually by the end of the first year, and then they all have developed differently, with some staying at 4 and others moving to 8-10/day. You should be allowed to move at your own pace and develop your skills without stress. I hope that helps explain why you may be struggling so much! Fortunately, all of these issues can be fixed rather easily, but you're dealing with what sounds like a rather unique and difficult set up that you may not have any control over. But please stay positive - we need wonderful people like you in this industry! Thanks so much for reaching out and sharing your story! 😊

Lovely - I definitley prefer handsome Dino's grooming look - I have a Coton, Dolly, and she looks just like him.That is definitley THE Coton de Tulear look. 🥰 I have never done the "puppy look" on her - I don't think it suits them, and hardly distinguishes Cotons from the Maltese, Bichons, etc, who are nearly always groomed in that puppy look fashion.

You are so right! I love Dino's look and that is indeed the Coton signature style! I'm glad u brought it up because we started Dora (the puppy cut girl in the video) with a natural style, but her coat is so easily matted that we (the owners and I) decided it was most humane to keep her in a puppy look. Oh. My. Goodness! Congratulations on your new Coton puppy! What a great choice of breed! Sure, the next 2 years are poop and pee (and adorable cuteness, lol!), but my heart is happy knowing the bond you will make together. Sending my best wishes! ❤️ Any grooming questions, u know where we are! Thanks so much for your comment and for sharing your new puppy journey! 🥰

Hi! Where is this muzzle from? I need one for my small maltipoo grooming

Hi Sofia! I have a set of different sizes, like this one: amzn.to/4cIcVPq, and would think your Maltipoo would be either size 1 or 2 (I use a size 1 in the video.) Hope that helps and good luck! 🐾😊

I barely comment on videos on KZbin but this one I gotta say it’s helpful and yeah I appreciate the fact that there isn’t a lot of unnecessary yapping so this one gets an a plus on my books

Wouldn't you need to add the length the blade cuts to the comb length? For example a wahl 10 blade cuts 1.8mm on its own, combine it with a number 2 comb which cuts 6mm wouldn't the final length be 7.8mm? Or if the number 2 comb is combined with an andis 30 blade which cuts 0.5mm wouldn't the final length be 6 + 0.5mm = 6.5mm So what im asking is does the blade size under the comb change the final length like the examples above, or does it cut at the stated comb lenght regardless which blade is used underneath?

I was just going to sleep when I saw your comment, and it woke me up! Yes, the two blades used under standard guide combs (10 or 30, the latter being most common for pros) does change the *tightness* of the cut. But the difference (by eye) manifests as a smoother look with the #30 underneath. Thanks for doing the math! Final result: use a 30 under your guide comb is poss, but 10 is ok for home groomers. Love the nerd, please come back! 😆
