Hello, I think I already answered on another question and I apologize for the delay! My favorite basic brush that works for many different types of coats is this one: amzn.to/4cwgJDT. If you are working with a long Shih Tzu show dog, you'll use a bit of a different brush with the pins farther apart and longer (called a Pin Brush). But for pets in a puppy cut, a good Slicker Brush is what works great, and don't forget to check your brushing with a metal comb to make sure you don't miss any knots. Good luck, and thanks for your question!

Hi there, you have a lot of choices in slicker brushes depending on your dog's coat length, but a wonderful general purpose brush that is not expensive is the Miracle Coat: amzn.to/4cwgJDT. Hope that helps, thanks! 😊

Hi, thanks 4 your question! If you're just looking to do minor clipping, like removing matting behind your pup's ears, you can save a lot of money and just get a basic little device, kinda like this one: amzn.to/3z7VF8l. Let me know if u need something with more power - that's a whole different discussion, lol! Thanks so much for watching! 😍

Hi Chris! The usual Dremel sanding band works great: amzn.to/3XpvX9a, but I prefer a sanding stone for most jobs since I can use the top as well as sides (I use the larger cylinder shape from this group): amzn.to/3VJBd6x. Hope that helps, and thanks 4 watching! 🐾

would it be harmful to trim the longer hairs away from his face and ears? my dog gets mats there easily, especially from his collar so sometimes i trim around there but i'm not sure if it is bad for him or not with his double coat
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming 4 күн бұрын
Hi, great question! It sounds like you are doing little trims on your pet, and that should be absolutely fine. The concern about cutting a double-coat really revolves around full-body haircuts or shaves, which can damage certain coats (like a Husky or Pomeranian). If you are working with a show dog, then the rules are much stricter, but for our pets, we can bend a few rules to keep them more comfortable. Hope that helps and happy grooming! 😊

That would be a Shiba huh?? 😂 I’ve got a rescue that I’m trying to just treat the ears of & she’s being a demon about it. Idk how to get to her without getting bit. I hate to muzzle her. Even still she is a fighter. Would this help on her? I also need to clean her ears so I need some pretty still access to those ears

Hi, lol, indeed, a Shiba! 😂 Yikes, I have been there many times! The towel trick should help - basically, once you have the towel wrapped around their collar area and you're holding gently but firmly, you should be able to get to the ears from behind without getting bit. They may make it challenging by tucking their ears back into the towel, so it def helps to have a buddy, if possible. Be careful, though! I hate muzzles myself but have to use them from time to time when absolutely necessary. Hope that helps and good luck! 🐾

@@GinasGrooming thank you! I will try it but unfortunately she’s got an ear infection & I was hoping to muzzle train her for times like these & I read it’s best to keep positive associations to the muzzle for the important times so she is just as comfortable with it as a harness? I’ve bought so many gadgets already lol. I’ve got the pillow to put around her head etc. I was watching grooming videos bc I had seen people tethering dogs so they couldn’t move around too much. I was trying to think of something i could possibly build at home but I’m just not sure yet. I’ve taken her to the vet 4x already & can’t afford another trip so it’s just me this time! I’m loving your videos!

@@FoxRox5 Aw, I am sorry that you and your pup are going through all this. And of course, she's extra defensive because her ears hurt right now. 😥 I totally understand the muzzle thing, and yes, you can make a homemade tether (and I use one in certain circumstances: kzbin.infoKI_EQ0G6oUM), but they really help when doing work far away from the head. So, without being there to help, lol, I have two methods you may want to try. The first method is in your home, when she's relaxed, or playing with a toy on your lap, and you can sneak the meds into her ear. This takes a lot of time and patience since you're waiting for that perfect moment, petting her head, desensitizing her, and then rewarding after each success. The second method is for desperate measures and requires a grooming table, an arm, or something that acts like that. If you do not have pro equipment like a grooming loop and belly loop, you can use strips of soft fabric to recreate that. In essence, you want to loop her under one armpit, so that the grooming loop (or fabric) goes across her chest (no loop around her throat), and the other belly loop (or fabric) goes under her midsection. You want to attach these loops to your grooming arm and then raise the arm so that she is slightly lifted off the table. Now you can act fast (and use the towel-trick at the same time if needed!) and get those meds in. Without her having the stability of having her feet on the ground, she will still be able to snap at you (careful!), but in a very limited sense. I realize this sounds extreme, but in the case of medical conditions (esp painful ones like this), we just have to get it done quickly and safely. And always tons of love after! Sorry for the long explanation; my heart is with you. Good news is that there is always a way, and I'm sure you will find it! Best of luck!

Oh no, Theresa! Sounds like your pup has extreme eye buildup that takes extra soaking to soften up and remove. If you are not able do it without hurting your baby, definitely visit a good groomer in your area soon (that buildup will only get worse and can cause a sore to form under the buildup.) The good news is that once the buildup is removed, all you need to do is wipe daily, and it will never build up again! Good luck, sending my best wishes on getting your pet's eyes back into perfect shape!

Thank you, very helpful point about magnifying reading glasses to both protect and see better. I have them for close sewing, will get them out for the nails too now! I saw somewhere a helpful tip about pulling a piece of old tights over the feet to hold the hair away from the nails. Will try the water and the tights too, and see which works best for me and my miniature poodle puppy, currently a bit too wriggly, so anything that means I can see better helps. I will also use the dremel, as your point about older people is spot on, my older partner now has 3 wounds on his hands from her trying to love him. At the moment he is putting gardening gloves on to play with her. Definitely dremel required!

Hi Jess, thanks for the feedback! And the tights idea sounds really good! Another viewer suggested to use garlic netting (hopefully washed after the garlic, lol!), which also seems like it would work great to keep that hair away. Thanks for contributing! And sorry to hear that your partner is getting scratched - yes, using a Dremel helps tremendously. If you already have a Dremel, that's always great, but if you are looking for a cheaper alternative, I have been very impressed with the new styles of grinders - super quiet, safe, and affordable. @@GinasGrooming thank you so much for answering me. 😊👍 Can I ask what the lower speed is used for and do you find yourself using it?
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming 22 күн бұрын
@@MunchkinMoD Hi, absolutely! I have a 2-speed right now and yes, I do use both speeds for different situations. The low speed is better for smaller or timid pets due to the lower noise - but the lower speed also keeps the blade cooler for longer since the friction on the blade is less than with the higher speed. So, if I am able to easily do a shave-down on the lower speed, that's usually the better option. But the higher speed is great to have when you need it! And I usually stay on high-speed when I do big puppy cuts using a guide-comb. That being said, I have used 1-speed clippers for many years in my career with no issues, so if you are leaning towards a 1-speed, you should be fine as long as it is a quality machine. Hope that answers your question! 😊

@@GinasGrooming it did I think I’m going to go for the two speed but now I’m trying to figure out what xtra blades I might need and guards. Do you know of any 10 blades that will fit the Andis you recommend that will take a while to get hot cause my dog and cat can sometimes be difficult?
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming 10 күн бұрын
@@MunchkinMoD I think the 2 speed is a good way to go! So, for *under* your guard combs, you can use a #10, no problem, but know most groomers use a shorter #30 blade for a bit of a tighter, smoother cut. But #10 is fine and great to have for your sanitary shaves! The other good news about using a guard comb is that the comb does not allow the hot blade to get close to the pet's skin, so you do not need to worry about cooling it as often as if you were using a shaving blade (like a #5F, #7F or #10) directly on the skin. The Andis clipper should come with a #10 blade already. But it's always good to have a spare, and any A5 style blade from any of the big manufacturers should work great (and although I have not had much experience with ceramic blades, they are said to stay cooler longer.) In terms of your guard combs, look at the size listed on the comb and know that the length listed is what is left on the pet. That should give you an idea of which ones to buy if you don't want the entire set. Hope that helps, and please reach out if you have more questions! 😊

Hi Gina! Just started watching your videos and subscribed. I do just home grooming for my own dog. You talk about the grooming arms. I bought an arm, but it didn't come with the bolt and hook that seems to be on your grooming arm. Where do you get one of those? Mine just has the retangular slots under the bottom of the top arm. I wasn't even sure how to use my grooming loops with those slots. Can you explain those in a video please?
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming 24 күн бұрын
Hi Sara, what a great question! Some arms come with the eye hook screwed into it, and others come with rectangular or oval cutouts. The idea is that you connect your loop between the cutouts, eliminating the need for the bolt and hook. There are some problems with option 2, but most connectors seem to work ok. I have this style in my bath and my over-the-table grooming arm, so if u need pics, send me an email at [email protected], and I will respond with details! Thanks 4 your question! 😊

Thank you for this great video!! May I ask a question, please ... here goes. I bought the Andis battery nail grinder near the end of 2023; I also bought the grinder head replacement package. Before I ordered, I called Andis and asked if it would be a good idea for me to also buy the replacement package (I asked if the pink heads would be helpful for me as my dog was small and has really small nails, and if I could use the pink heads / the answer was yes). * * Things got very busy, so I had a local groomer trim my gal's nails (but when she is done, my dog's nails do not looked trimmed hardly at all). So, back to me trying to keep her nails trimmed. Sorry for all the words!! My question is -- my Andis nail grinder did not come with a tiny wrench; I did not see a wrench to buy on Andis; nor on a web search; nor on YT. Where can I buy a mini wrench to change out the heads? Sorry for being so wordy!! Thank you so much!!!
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming Ай бұрын
Hi there, you are not wordy at all and it's a great question! After your comment, I ran down to my salon and got my Andis grinder and my bit kit that came with it, and yes, there is a little wrench in the pack. Sorry that yours did not come with one! But the good news is that although I have the wrench, I have never needed to use it. To change out sanding bits, I push the blue lock/release button while turning the bit casing counter clockwise, and it just loosens up by using my fingers. I then replace the bit with the one I want (put the stalk into the casing assembly) and then screw it back on the device, push the blue button and tighten it clockwise. I think the wrench could be a handy tool if the casing really got stuck, but I have not seen that happen, not with the Dremels I've used, the Osters, nor the Andis. So, I think you'll be good without the wrench! I found a video that mentions the wrench at around the 3 min mark, but again, I have not found any need for it myself. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5u3gWujaaxgqdEsi=WMqBBNqlt9JqdWsA Hope that helps and thanks for your question!

@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming Ай бұрын
Hi Susan, so glad our videos are helpful! 🙏 Oh gosh, well, a 6 mo old shipoo is definitely a wiggly challenge, especially when working around the face! Best advice I can give is to start getting him used to face holds for short amounts of time and then reward. Increase the timing, and then work with closed scissors and just run them around his mouth, then reward. Once you have him still for a few seconds consistently, u can do a quick snip or 2, watching out for that tongue. I know it's scary (that's a good thing, it makes us careful), but it is definitely doable! Good luck and Happy Grooming! 😊

At 3:45 you mention the coat king taking out undercoat. Just wondering, aren't we supposed to remove undercoat? I have a wire hair foster right now which is why I'm watching this video, but I also have a 5 pound pomeranian and I've always thought we need to brush the undercoat otherwise it tangles and gets matted. Is that not the case? And if so, how do I stop the undercoat from tangling on the pom?
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming Ай бұрын
What a FANTASTIC QUESTION! Your Pomeranian and your Wire-Haired breed have completely different coats which require different grooming procedures. Now, both are double coated, so that's where a lot of confusion usually comes in. You are 100% correct, your Pom needs regular brushing and combing, all the way to the skin, to remove dead undercoat that could get stuck, accumulate, and cause matting. What we see on a well-maintained Pom is the luxurious topcoat, with the fuzzy undercoat acting as an insulating layer below (and adding to their trademark "poof"!). However, for Wire-Haired coats, we gently remove dead topcoat to encourage new topcoat to grow. The undercoat on these types of dogs is very fine, silky, and lays flat (very different from a Pom or any Spitz). When new topcoat growth is encouraged on these breeds, it grows back in denser and healthier, creating basically a water-resistant barrier (which is very helpful for many of these terriers that developed in rainy areas like Scotland, Ireland and England.) Whew, sorry for the long response, but it's such an important question, and thank you for asking! And rest assured that your brushing and combing is exactly what you need to do for your Pom Pom, with your wire-haired baby needing a very specialized grooming service. Hope that helps and thanks for watching! 🐾😍

My toy poodle always comes back whining, stiff, shaking, and in pain. He won't eat, drink, move, he trembles, and lies around for days, and I don't understand why this is happening. It's like a reoccurring injury that I can't seem to stop from happening. Does anyone have an idea what's happening and how to nip this in the bud?

Hi, thank you for sharing, and I'm so sorry your little Poodle is having such a bad reaction to grooming - which is not typical! I would change his grooming routine and work with a groomer who will allow you to be present during the groom (like a mobile or private groomer). Nothing in grooming should cause any pain or anxiety like you have described; your little guy may just need extra reassurance and support. Hope this helps and good luck! 🐾🙏

@GinasGrooming Hello & I appreciate your reply, very much. A groomer a few years back, I believe, caused the injury. I saw an obvious change in him after a visit. He wouldn't take a treat from me, and if by chance he did, he would wince, whimper, and pull away quickly 😔. I quit taking my dog to that groomer, but he still displays the same fears. It shouldn't be like this! He was groomed on May 9th, and he's still in pain and not himself. He finally drank water last night. He ate, but only 2 days later. I will ask the groomer if I can be there. I pray it helps.

Hi, you are so right, it shouldn't be like this! It may be hard to pinpoint exactly what happened to cause trauma (maybe the loudness of the environment, or a big, scary dog barked at him in the salon, or he is just a sensitive boy), but I would take him out of any grooming situation where there is a lot of noise, many dogs, waiting in a kennel for hours - basically any general salon setting. A private or mobile groomer is more expensive, but it sounds like your pup needs a different experience. And if u can't afford it (I get it), you may need to groom him at home yourself. Which many people do, exactly for the reasons you are dealing with. Your situation speaks to me since I started my private salon especially for these types of dogs, and it's wonderful to see them rehabilitate. Have faith, you can definitely turn this situation around! Sending my best wishes! 💕

Hi Jutta! I hope I pronounced your name correctly in the video! 😅 So happy this may help with your Poodle baby (I am a little jealous, to be honest - they are so fun and terrible at that age!) Sending all my best across the pond! Danke! 💕

Hi Gina, yes you pronounced my name perfectly 🤗🤗🤗 My poodle baby is a fawn red and she is so powerful, sometimes I can’t believe it. But I am lucky that Rosalie is so in love with my black poodle Jeannie. They play a lot and even when they sleep, they are very close to each other. That helps a lot 🥰🥰 We enjoy the time, because they grow up so fast. Wish you all the best Jutta

I got an Opal and it only lasted about 6 months, it was shooting down in the middle of the groom, then I got a replacement though the warranty... And the exact same thing happened after about 6 months... It works great during that time but after that... Not so much. Y take care very good care of my blades, and I contacted Ryan's Pet Supplies and they said they've been having issues with those. Any one who can relate to this?

Hi, gosh, so sorry, I am 7 mo in and no problems! I'm interested to see if others have had the same experience as you. I will try to reach out to Heineger. Thanks for your comment!

I also want to add this works great on brachycephalic dogs that don't have a snoot to muzzle. That hardest part about this technique is the owners screaming at you that you're strangling their dog and that it's not trying to bite.

🤣 Omgosh, so true on all counts! And I know u know (ok using "brachycephallic" kinda gave it away, lol!) Thanks for cracking me up! 😍

I just found your channel and I am in love with Rosie! She’s the sweetest goodest girl ❤ I have a 9 year old standard poodly doodle (she’s pretty curly!) named Magnolia. She had knee surgery 2 years ago after blowing out her right knee and has just blown her left 😭😭. She also has bad arthritis and doesn’t move around great anyway. We are preparing for surgery in a few weeks and I have decided to groom her myself so that we can take all the breaks she needs. I’ve purchased a Wahl KM10 clipper, a flying pig dryer, a 30 and a 5f blade, a set of stainless steel guard combs. I already have a slicker brush and a metal comb. What size grooming table do you think I should get? I want her to be able to lay down if she needs to. She’s 65lbs and about 26 inches from her butt to her chest and 22.5 inches tall. Thank you for any suggs you can offer!

Hi Cathline, thank you so much for appreciating my Rosie baby! Aw, sorry that your Magnolia is going thru so much, but the good news is that you sound prepared! Kudos to jumping and working with your older baby yourself (it's usually so much better.) OK, for the table, if space is an issue, I can assure you that my 24×36 table is what I use for housecalls and groom Poodles the same size as Magnolia on it with no problems (they can lie down and turn around comfortably.). But if you have the space, the 48in table is actually less expensive in the brand that I use, funny enough! amzn.to/3yc8uhq. Hope that helps and good luck with everything!

Hello, thank u for the video! It helps! But how about the after care?? Should I bandage the paws even the bleed already stop??
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming Ай бұрын
Hi there, in normal cases applying the styptic powder is enough and no after care is typically needed. It sounds like you didn't cut too far into the nail and the bleeding is under control, so that is great, and you should be good! Sometimes you may need to re-apply the powder if the cut is deeper and the nail starts to bleed again. If this does happen and you need a little more protection for the paw while it heals, you can buy baby socks that would fit the size of your pet. Hope that helps and thanks for your comment! 😊

@@GinasGrooming oh thank u! So, is it okay if i dont use socks or anything to cover the paw?? I just worrying about the infection
@GinasGrooming
@GinasGrooming Ай бұрын
@@chikadamara9717 That is a very valid concern, thank you for bringing it up! Rest assured that under normal circumstances the styptic powder protects the exposed vein from bacteria and other microbes. I have never seen an infection occur after a bleeding nail as long as it was treated in a timely manner and in a clean environment. And seeing how concerned you are about your pup, you are going to do great! I know cutting a nail too short feels pretty major, (and sure, we try to avoid it), but it's something that happens all the time, in salons all over the world, every day. You are not alone, and the pups forget about it as soon as it happens. Thanks so much for showing how much you love your dog! 🐾🐾💖
