I can vaguely recall being stopped by a train at Prestonhall Crossing, probably in the 1980s, although I think they did continue until the end of Speedlink in 1992. There were only a few special shunters that could be fitted through the A92 underpass: they'd had some trimming done to their bodywork, locally, I believe!

The winner in years of urban decay. The street furniture purveyors. No shops, no work, but nice bollards and setts. Pathetic non action from pseudo professional councils.

Great, informative coverage. Thank you. I called into Lochore earlier this summer to see if any remnants of the line were evident, and it seemed to me that it had been wiped off the face of the earth.

The original loch was drained by the land owner when a cut was made through the rock at the east end of the lock which was the lochs natural outlet. This is how the name Meadows - Meadies to the locals - come about as the shallow loch provided flat meadow land for grazing and planting, at least that was the intention that I believe proved a bit of a disaster. The bridge/tunnel at Lochore is not the original as coal trains moved up and down the line under the bridge. I don't remember seeing any large movements of coal trains when I lived there in the 1940/50's although there were always coal wagons waiting to be filled at the weighbridge near the Mary pit.

On showing a friend through Kirkcaldy, she thought that that building was a burnt out shell 😂. To me the most hideous architectural design is along by the harbour of those facing onto the main road with those protruding form of canopies. The swimming pool was a terrible and of unsafe design, (professional and factual opinion) so glad to see it demolished. Haven't entered the new one. I have now added that too my bucket list😊. The present ones location I believe would have been better if located at the railway station taking part off the current car park. There you have bus, train and road vehicle all in the one area. Thus saving the region thousand upon thousands of pounds in restructuring the prom because of lack of parking for the new pool. I admit the modernising of the prom and road restructuring is in itself very attractive. So perhaps i should remember the old saying " Fools and bairns shouldnt comment on a job half done".😂 Swimming Baths/Indoor Pools in the Kingdom, 1st. Dunfermline, then 2nd Bowhill ( credited by the massive effort of the late Andrew Johnstone Snr.) 3rd Kirkcaldy. 4th Leven. Kirkcaldy Swimming Club in the past used the harbour. I believe there was a Lido along by the rope factory at Seafield now Morrisons. Out into the water at that location is an extremely large block of concrete. This i believe was to be Kirkcaldy's 2nd harbour location, that obviously rnever materialised.

What a brilliant video! Why did I never think of this?!! There is a book that was published last year, "Wemyss Trams and Early Buses," by Alan Brotchie (2023), Stenlake Publishing; that is very informative, with lots of photos, though not so much of this end of the line - so well done, you! The tramway, which operated from 1903 - 1932, had running rights via Kirkcaldy & District Tramway's Victoria Road "upper" route, to the foot of Whytescauseway in the town centre. At the other end it terminated at the Scoonie end of Leven High Street, by Carberry House Gates. Mostly single track with passing places every half-mile, off-peak trams generally operated at 15-minute headways, terminating alternately at Gallatown and Kirkcaldy. Naturally it did also operate workers' services, for which it had separate, higher capacity vehicles. The depot was at Aberhill, adjacent to today's bus depot.

We used to walk along there to the Coaltown to see our families. We called that stretch The Carlines. Came out at Bowhouse farm then . That would’ve been 1960 and I can’t remember any rails being there then. At the beginning of the Boreland woods to the left, is where the miners used to gamble at the Burling. The tossing of 2 pennies and occasional pennies are still found. Easier with a metal detector I’d imagine.

I used to walk my dogs along the line from the carpark on the site of the steam shed to Whitefield Road then up to the colliery line to Townhill. Whilst in the car park did you notice the curved wooden fence that marked the boundary where the turntable used to be? Also did you see the brick retaining wall at the location of Touch North signalbox just before the overbridge you pointed out the cable run? As you didn't feature these I'm guessing you missed them.

Comparing the refuges with those in Glenfarg tunnel, there the tunnel bored through rock so brick facing was not required but at Invertiel the tunnel was made in the dirt embankment so nothing solid behind it. An interesting video of an area I know well.

I remember all that you are saying and bringing back all the memories when I used to travel from Ladybank to Alloa for about 18 months 2 years up till it closed, bringing the Forth bridge and also the swing bridge that used to open to allow the ships up with cement to the other side of the road bridge, and also at closing of the Alva and Kinross. And happy to see more lines getting opened, like the Thornton to Leven and onto St Andrews worked until it closed ,which I had 47 years of service with British Rail.

Hi, yes its me again 😊. Have just seen this vid today. I wondered who the clean shaven handsome young man was😂. You will have not known its my local stomping ground from my childhood. With todays traffic, it would be safer to park at the prefabs area at Cardenden, then walk up to the Blueberry hill, take a right then continue upwards and along. Its my intention to walk around there this summer if i am still able health wise. The part that the ruins are situated was known locally as the Boos (spelling?). Sadly I didnt get more info from my dad as to who stayed there or its origin. But i do remember him smiling as we stood there, he must have been remembering his youth as we cast our eyes over the surrounding terrain and the terrace cottage he was born and brought up in at Cluny. The ancient burial ground was surveyed by a group from Dundee or Stirling University around 1990. The location was more noticeable at that time. The pathway was highly popular for ones Sunday stroll. It was known as the circle, for that's what it is. I always wondered if it was a road track leading to the now none existing Castle within the forest. Along, off the lower path, that you looked down upon, was another track road that lead you through the fields and forest to the Shawsmill / Torbain Towers main road. Cant do that now with the introduction of the dual carriageway. Yet one can cautiously go through (if still allowed) Carden farm and cross over by the flyover. Further down the main road from your starting point, (Dothan Farm), in the dip you will see a small electric sub station, there, a path that heads west a short distance to Cluny Square. You will see at the beginning of the path a small fenced section to the right. In there was a small cottage that the Bernard family had resided. I often wondered if that was the Cluny Toll in origin. I wonder if anyone reading this remembers the "cheni hooses", the cottages were just up from the Dothan and Begg farms, and the hooses were flattened for the duel carriageway Cheers 😊.

Thank you for posting this. I live close to where the old loco depot stood, and frequently when out walking, try to reimagine the layout that was once there. Those shots of the old maps that you included really helped me to see where the sheds and tracks once were. Thank you. I like your explorations of local history a lot. Keep up the good work.

They knocked down the houses my family and others lived in to build these structures. All I could show my daughter on a recent trip home was the apartments and parking structure. Thank goodness the Masonic Hall is still standing as is the Volunteers Green down the road. Mind you I grew up in the 50's on Thistle Street.

I remember going down there as a kid in the 70s, there was still a bed frame in the main room and the hatch was always unlocked. I also remember using the squash court in the old Silverburn flax mill. You bought a key for 50p from the council and played whenever you wanted, nobody seemed to know about it.

Apparently this was a goods only line that ran up to Lochty (east Fife) from 1898-1964. I remember a railway bridge/viaduct that ran above the Leven Road. Demolished mid 1970's?

Thank you for posting this. I have been thinking about the old route for some time recently now and remembering how it was in the 1970's/80's before it was closed down. There doesn't seem to be a lot documented about it. Hopefully i can clarify some points for you. Where the car park & flats are to the east of the retail park, used to be the old steam train maintenance sheds. These were closed & knocked down when the new shed was built at Halbeath. The remains of the turntable pit remained until the car park was built in the 1980's. You were able to see this from a small lane off Appin Crescent called Piggies Lane. The railway crossed over a bridge over Townhill Road before entering the Upper Station. Where Tesco now stands used to be the bus station. There was a path leading from the back of the station, past the rear of the factory to Foundry Street. This path took you over a metal bridge which crossed the railway. I think the railway appeared from the tunnel as it passed by the side of the factory. Unfortunately, as you will have noticed, it is not possible to access the viaduct or walk from the viaduct west until you reach the cycle path at Willam Street, Baldridge Burn.
