Great idea, but I'd use a shallower bowl. That looks too deep. A birth bath should only be 2-3 inches deep.

There are very few things that can go wrong with a lamp and all of them can be fixed. There are many videos on KZbin that show you how to do this. Destroying a lamp to make a birdbath is such a ridiculous idea, I almost feel sorry for the people suggesting this. WRZ 2021-09-01

Don't parts of the lamp rust or tarnish outside in the elements? Also, the bowl is much too deep. Smaller birds could drown, especially on the slippery glass. Best to put a layer of aquarium gravel in the bottom so the birds have a base to stand on.

I try and look for smooth, white bird baths, because that makes it much easier to tell if the water is dirty. Dark colors and mosaics are the worst for seeing dirt. Birds are the only creatures that will see these designs and I doubt they care about the design inside the BB. The crevices around an interior design inside a bowl are also the most likely place for mold to begin growing and these crevices also make it much harder to clean the bowl (If you don't care about dirty water it doesn't matter.) I also keep a tightly wound handle strainer hung-up near the bird bath and use that to clean very minute debris and birdcrap out of the birdbath between changes of the water. (I buy 3 or 4 at a time at the dollar store) I change the water at least once a day. Some species of birds like doves and sparrows will crap in the water on a regular basis. I try and remove it while it is still fresh and intact. I went to a Lowes to buy a birdbath recently and I was very surprised to see that most of them were designed very poorly in my opinion. But I guess a lot of people buying their first birdbaths are novices who are more impressed by aesthetics than the utility of the design(?) I never use my clay/pottery bird baths in the winter. The constant pressure on the sides from freezing ice at night and thawing during daylight will cause these bird baths to disintegrate much sooner than they should. One day they appear to be fine and then the bowl will suddenly collapse. I'm only aware of this because it happened to a neighbor of mine. I use a heated, white, plastic bird birdbath in the winter but I don't fill it up too high because the water on the lip will freeze. I thought the heater had stopped working until realized I was filling it too high. I try and remember to turn off the heater and empty it at night in the winter but sometimes I forget to do this. But I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and people in warmer climates probably don't have to worry about this. WRZ 2020-04-09 Delaware County, PA

When you go to a store to buy a birdbath, the reason why you NEVER EVER see any of them made of glass is because they would be too slippery for the birds to stand in, especially when they are wet. Plus most lamps would have an incline that is too steep to be practical for a birdbath. As much as I like seeing people re-purpose broken appliances, these retrofitted birdbaths don't seem like a good idea to me. Especially in extreme hot or cold climates.
@LJW11023 жыл бұрын
I was worried about the same thing the slipperiness and the depth. There are so many pretty glass birdbaths in stores but look to slippery. Plus I have found some of my baths tipped over from a stray cat trying to get a drink.

If the on/off switch on an old lamp becomes a problem, you can sometimes salvage the lamp by buying a toggle switch at the local hardware box store. (I like to get the 3 prong switches because they stay in place better.) Then you plug the lamp into the switch and always use the switch to turn the lamp on and off. This is MUCH easier than trying to rewire or repair the lamp. WRZ Delaware County, PA

make sure to have the water no deeper than 2" with some gravel and a flat rock for them to squaught down on for their bath for the shorter ones like hummingbirds.

Why not use it as a rudder like a sail boat . That what I Do It turns awesome .. also if u let your paddle drag just the tip of it in the water it will give u a nice turn it’s something I do with my feet when I’m paddling my long board into waves so I transfer them tricks to my paddle board. .. it’s not some thing new the Hawaiians use to us this trick many moons ago when they used to surf Myliar surf boards with no fins ... if your a surfer u will understand stand what I’m saying ..

The bowl on top is beautiful but much to deep for a birdbath. Have to be careful with baby birds, I learned this the hard way and was heartbroken to find the baby fell in and couldnt get out.

put an upside down bowl covering the center and put a decorative flat rock on top. Makes it shallower.

Tammy DiMola you are correct and your boyfriend is too. I made a bird bath and used non toxic clear drying sealant that I bought at my Ace Hardware store......but you can get the stuff anywhere practically......and it too was safe for aquariums. If it's safe for fish it's probably safe for birds as well. Thanks for putting that up Tammy.
