Richard Nelson dedicated his life to seeing the invisible forces binding us all together. Immersion in indigenous cultures and wild country deepened his confidence in "the rightness of what Koyukon elders teach - that no one is ever alone, unseen, or unheard, and that gratitude kindles the very heat of life."
Richard’s life, rooted in the “unshakable sanity of the senses,” illuminates a path toward wholeness. In a culture lost in the delusion of separateness, Richard became an unlikely, irreverent holy man.
Following Richard’s death in the fall of 2019, author Hank Lentfer committed to continuing his friend’s legacy of storytelling. His new book Raven's Witness: The Alaska Life of Richard K. Nelson will be published in August 2020 by nonprofit publisher Mountaineers Books. The book, with a foreword by Barry Lopez, is already garnering praise from media:
“Packed with relevant messages, Lentfer’s biography is a timely reminder to heed the advice of students who have learned from the greatest teacher of all: nature.” -Foreword Reviews
We are seeking a total of $10,000 support that will allow Lentfer's book to have elevated media presence, and to facilitate "Listening Sessions," both digitally and in person when COVID-19 allows, designed to infuse wisdom of indigenous cultures and the beauty of wild voices into a national conversation about what it means to be a citizen on this continent.
Your gift will support:
• Publication of the book
• “Listening Sessions” across America featuring the author, readings, and Nels’ sound recordings
• Honorariums for Indigenous environmental leaders to participate as speakers in these sessions
• Keeping Nels’ work alive through interviews and media
