It's that old recurring dream where you're drowning Flailing your arms out, fearful and frantic And black waves are curling and pounding Down onto your head somewhere in the Atlantic Through the fathoms below you a shadow Is gliding up towards you with singular purpose And hundreds of thousands of gallons Of ocean froth and foam as it breaks the surface Its black eyes find you almost at once You can't hide, swim away or take air into your lungs To scream for help that won't come And oftentimes I am awoken At three in the morning by screams in the attic I'll run upstairs, wrench the door open Call out a warning (and try not to sound panicked) But my hammering heart hears the voices Of spirits that tempt us, the scorn that they've spoken I'll remember the sad frightened noises Of an old friend who dreamt once of storms on the ocean And black eyes looking up from below

Normally I associate Duck and Cover with your apocalypse pieces but in the context of the prodigal album and Arielle story I really do see a reading for it in how abuse can get treated like an apocalypse. Something inescapable, overwhelming, something you can’t do anything about both from the perspective of Arielle and her community. For Arielle it’s ducking blows and hiding and praying it’ll pass and smothered highways that prevent her from leaving, and her friends/community it’s sharing something heavy with a room of strangers, a collective fear you all do nothing about, and pretending not to hear “you screaming through the walls last night”. All these alarms going off and all anyone does is wait until it’s over. Like the abuser is a nuclear threat or a force of nature and not something anyone could stop. “We’ll call each other friends/we’ll never speak again” for how they all failed to help Arielle or Darian. Drifting apart, never speaking up for them.

I originally found this song through Night Vale, but I've recently listened to The Magnus Archives, and the first verse describes The Vast as an ocean/thalassophobia pretty well.

I love this song and the whole album more than I can say. I've listened to it on repeat (both the song and the album) relentlessly and it gets to me every time. I was wondering whether you'd share the chords for it? I'd love to learn it, and I think I'm quite close but can't fully figure them out.
@DavidWirsig1239 ай бұрын
That seriously means so much to hear, thank you. I don't have a ton of experience writing out notation but I'll try to write chords in a way that hopefully makes sense. Here's the chord progression for the main melody and the chorus: D---A---D---F--#m----A-- (repeat) The verses start the exact same way, and then are followed by a second progression that goes like this: D---A---F--#m-----E--- There's a few small variations here and there throughout the song, but that's basically it!

Does anyone have the chords for this? Absolutely love this song and trying to learn it on the guitar. With a capo on 1 I think it's Cm-Bb-Fm-G for the verse but the chorus seems to do something different? Any help appreciated :)
@DavidWirsig1233 жыл бұрын
I actually play it on capo 4! So the verse chords for that would be Am-G-Dm-E, and in the chorus it would be Am-C-Dm-G-E (the first two chord changes are faster in the chorus if that makes sense). If you wanted to stick with capo 1, the chorus would just be Cm-Eb-Fm-Bb-G

My friend and I have been going through these lyrics on and off for months, making so many small connections and links among the songs. I love the poetry and the different perspectives that are woven throughout the album. One thing we were having trouble with, tough; who is "What's-His-Name" in Disclaimer? Originally, we thought it would have been Darian, but that doesn't seem to make much sense. Are there any other theories?
@DavidWirsig1233 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words, really means a lot! "What's-his-name" is Arielle's partner, the abuser (the same person who narrates Leviathan). He's the one character on the album who I thought should remain nameless.
@elliekaufman27753 жыл бұрын
@@DavidWirsig123 This makes so much more sense! Like I said, my friend and I have been piecing together the story since its release last October. We originally thought that Darian was the abuser, but that made things really complicated, especially in Disclaimer and Leviathan. This revelation has changed everything for us! Thank you so much for your poetry and the highly impactful story.
@DavidWirsig1233 жыл бұрын
@@elliekaufman2775 You're welcome, it really means a lot to hear how much you and your friend have connected with it! I can totally understand getting Darian confused with the abuser, there are definitely some lines in Disclaimer where it's unclear. If it helps, Darian is one of the people who organizes the intervention in "Arielle" (the song), so his main role in Arielle's story is to try and help her get out of the abusive relationship. Other than that though, I just wanted him to have his own separate story arc. Hope that helps!

Great song. Is it meant to be Christian allegory or do you just find the imagery evocative?
@DavidWirsig1233 жыл бұрын
Hey, sorry for the late reply! When I was writing this song I think I just wanted to use some of that familiar imagery to tell a new story. After I finished it though, I was surprised that so much of it lined up as a direct allegory, and this realization actually ended up influencing where a lot of the story goes on the rest of the album. So all that to say: a little from column A, a little from column B.
