Gotta disagree. The leverage of knowing something like that when you need a favor or are up for a promotion is about as good as it gets. Had Royce stayed on as mayor Valchek would have 100% used that card at some point and then would reward herc with a promotion or easy job he tried to set prez up with. Also if Royce stays as mayor Herc isn’t desperate enough to make such idiotic decisions to save his ass. And the camera problem? Goes away with a call from Valchek if he wants And it’s not because he’s a good guy. Helping out those who gave you intel will make them 10X more likely to come with similar information in the future

What separates "The Wire" from other dramas is that a character as likable and admirable as Prez begins his arc doing something truly heinous, blinding a kid with the butt of his pistol in an attempt to feel tough. This is not a show that's interested in giving you clean, friendly role-models to root for. These are based on real, flawed people who have to be considered on their own terms

@@tommy_danger_commented as long as he has Rhonda by his side, Daniels would be happy sweeping the halls of courtroom. He could have easily stayed Police Commissioner had he thrown Rhonda under the bus (the McNulty-tainted wire tap at the end of S5 that she technically was in charge of). But Daniels instead chose to semi-retire and allow Rhonda to ascend the ranks instead of him. He is one of the few characters to maintain their morality and integrity throughout the show, but of course that’s not counting when he was running wild in the DEU in the Eastern.
