I originally bought the 78” (XL) ones, seen in the video, but that was over kill and looked goofy. I was only carrying the RTT, so I switched to the 68” ones. The 78” ones are good if you’re trying to carry an RTT and like a bike mount or kayak mount or something.

I’m sure someone said this already ( I was too lazy to search the comments) but put the metal plates that secure the crossbars on BEFORE you put the bars on. Leave them loose, take off one of the end caps of the crossbar and press up on the screws holding the plates while sliding the bar into place. Way easier. Just installed this myself, worked like a charm. Thanks for the Vid! It was very helpful.

There are so many features of Yakima racks I like and was looking very closely at buying one after speaking to someone in the carpark at Derby in Tasmania. We wanted a rack for 2 x emtbs and will need to carry 3 x emtbs a few times a year. The 2-bike rack extension looked great; I reached out to Yakima for confirmation on weight limits that were not apparent from the web site. I discovered that if you ride emtbs (allowing 23kg or 51lbs each), Yakima Customer Support here in Australia advise they have no product in the range to carry more than 2 emtbs with a 50mm (2 inch) hitch receiver. Not sure if this is reflective of a limited range that is imported from America to Australia, but I recommend you get confirmation from Yakima if you ride emtbs.

React much? Your title was clickbait making it sound like the rack had an issue, not your truck.
@pnwoutdoors8873
@pnwoutdoors8873 9 ай бұрын
No, see that’s where you’re wrong and why I made the comments the way that I did! Did you even watch the video. The issue has nothing to do with the truck, because the truck is standard! That’s the point, that people like you don’t get. The issue is not the truck, the issue is the clamping design is useless and serves no purpose and will only work on vehicles with a standard 2” receiver, which only exists on like Toyota tacomas, mid size SUV’s and cars. Meaning they cut out an entire demographic of purchasers who can’t use that product because it’s an unnecessary design, it’s a design flaw, that it pointless, if they had simply designed the product without that mechanism they could have sold 100’s of thousands of more units. You’re missing the point! The design limits who can buy it. It’s not an issue with the vehicle because 2.5” receivers are standard across the country! It’s not a truck issue, it’s not rare, it’s 100% a design oversight on Yakima that limited sales potential because it eliminated universal usage and versatility. Yeah there’s nothing wrong with the rack, but only a few people can make use of it. That’s why I’m reacting, I get those comments all the time from people whom are missing the point, don’t understand trucks, or buyer demographics. It’s not clickbait, it’s informing the entire truck driving community of how it works and why they can’t use it. Which frankly was a huge flaw and oversight on yakimas part. Because that clamping mechanism simply isn’t necessary and limited the potential of who could buy the product. If they just had a through hole, we wouldn’t be having this conversation and they’d have sold alot more. If you don’t understand the point from what I’m saying, then I don’t know what else I can say. It’s not the truck, there’s nothing wrong with the truck, it’s a standard hitch, there’s millions of em. It’s the design of the product.
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid 9 ай бұрын
@@pnwoutdoors8873 if you get these types of "comments" all the time, then you need to think about how you are trying to get a point across in your videos, titles, and thumbnails. I watched your whole video and I feel like I wasted my time since I was expecting something different than what your title talked about. The video made me think there was a flaw with the product when indeed there wasn't. The product listing literally says on the box it's for a 2 inch receiver. If you don't have a 2 inch receiver you can't expect it to work properly. A better title for the video would include something like "Yakima Racks Don't Work With 2 inch Receivers - Why I Returned It". Pretty much any SUV, midsize truck, and crossover has a 2 inch hitch. That's like 80% of the market. Even half ton trucks fall into that category as well so maybe that number is even higher. Large trucks and 2.5 inch receivers are not as common or you'd see bike racks sold with that type of mounting hardware.
@jasonoid-official

Sooooo, if you have a rare 2.5 inch receiver, stay away from this model. Good to know.
@pnwoutdoors8873
@pnwoutdoors8873 9 ай бұрын
Soooo when you have to explain things multiple times to folks who don’t have a clue, you get to be sarcastic! There is nothing RARE about a 2.5” receiver, it’s actually the most common one out there and is standard on almost every 1/2-3/4-1ton trucks! A simple google search will tell you that, and every single truck I’ve ever owned, my friends have ever owned, unless special ordered with a 3” has come with a 2.5” hitch receiver with the reducer sleeve. It’s not rare, it’s pretty standard. Hence the point of the video Mr. Smarty pants.

@pnwoutdoors8873
@pnwoutdoors8873 10 ай бұрын
Nope none at all. It would be strange for SB to recommend 3 cross bars since 98% of truck racks only have two. That’d be a flaw on SB if that were the case. But no, never had an issue. SB provides pretty strong perpendicular supports, so not sure exactly where that info comes from. The trick is to not spread your cross bars too far apart, I did that in the beginning so my video is a little flawed, I ended up moving them in 3” on both sides, much better.

Just saw this video. I recently had my Holdup Evo stolen whilst parked on the street (thankfully no bikes on it). Perplexed, I claimed insurance and had it replaced. After a few weeks with the new rack, I thought I’d give the rack a decent tug. Turns out even when tightened right up and locked I can slide the whole rack out of the hitch receiver (albeit with a bit of force). This is a standard 2” hitch. So be aware of this as it is clearly not a secure system.

I’m not sure I know what you mean. Do you mean the fender storage boxes that dodge has built in to the bed fenders? If so, unfortunately this rack, and most racks will hinder your ability to use or open them. That’s an unfortunate downside to dodges design. It’s a good idea, but takes away a lot of versatility for the truck and mounting canopies, T covers, bed racks. Where you gain in one area you lose in another. If I were to offer my own opinion; dodges design; while well intended, well designed, didn’t consider market needs for truck and was overall just a bad idea, because it takes away from the concept of versatility we expect. In essence, it’s simply a gimmick and lacks functionality for the masses and really only helps a small niche group of folks. But again, that’s my own opinion. Now dodge might be an absolute genius in that they thought about this and they designed a whole bunch of accessories to accommodate that bed design allowing you to buy all the accessories; but only from dodge since it’s a proprietary design. My recommendation at the moment is to check with mopar and see what accessories they have, you might be surprised and they have something that works for what you want. I mean, it’s a truck, so they’ve likely thought about the possibilities and potential, but as far as the Yakima rack, I don’t think it’ll work for you. But I’m certain there are companies out there that have designed something, I’m just personally not familiar being a Chevy/gmc owner. I hope this helps, and if you find something, make a video my friend, I’m sure a lot of other folks are scratching their heads trying to solve the same problem! Thanks for watching my video man, means a lot!

Hitch mount bike racks are designed for cars and tacos, not full size trucks, let alone a 3/4 ton+ trucks. This video is just a tad overkill for a very niche subset of folks.
@pnwoutdoors8873
@pnwoutdoors8873 Жыл бұрын
I’ll say this politely… you are inherently very incorrect about your assessment of the market for tray bike racks. It’s not a niche subset. Having a truck does not minimize the value of a tray rack any differently than a car. Imagine a bed camper, or a camping trip, or a million other scenarios where it makes complete and total sense to have tray on a truck. The issue has nothing to do with it being a car or a truck, it has to do with the unnecessary proprietary design that cuts out a huge demographic of purchaser, probably 40-50% of purchasing probabilities. Thanks for watching.
