I'm 15 minutes into this video and the guest has stated, and I'm not kidding, 3 different Duel Masters mechanics are mechanics that "Nobody likes" You're allowed to punch up, but be accurate about it. (The three mechanics he has referred to specifically are: having dedicated blocker cards, the inability to act on the opponent's turn, and cards having a singular power stat.) I would be surprised if he's aware that Duel Masters is still going in Japan. Duel Masters is constantly fighting for being the most popular card game in Japan to this day (along with Pokemon, and Yugioh). It is above MtG in Japan, and, yes, even Kryptic. I'm not going to say popularity does a good game make, but clearly people do like these systems. So far all the guest has done has discredit himself as a result. Clearly there is something about the simplicity in Duel Masters that makes it elegant and have long-lasting appeal. Additionally he's thrown out the idea of 'interaction' like 20 times and just parroted the concept that interaction on your opponent's turn is the only meaningful form of it (here I'm extrapolating slightly because it's the only thing he's talked about aside from Kryptic's lore). A game like Duel Masters has interaction, just not during your opponent's turn quite as frequently. Instead of passing priority, you're passing turns and letting the opponent act on their turn, which may as well be just as interactive as passing priority in a lot of cases, but has less awkward staring at your opponent waiting for them to move every time you take any action. Games that don't have stacks can be more interactive in a lot of cases. I would argue the Transformers TCG is designed around this concept, and does it quite well, and, at a base level, I think is more interactive than a game like MtG. That all being said, I like the quality of this podcast. I'm gonna check out your other stuff, but I can't watch this one anymore... This guest is mispresenting basic concepts and returning conversation circularly away from the directed podcast topic toward Kryptic (a game I, the listener, have no reference for, nor care much to look into after listening).

So interesting to watch this interview 2 years after it's release. What has now happened is just what was being described as a vague possibility by the creators- some younger guys who love the game and the comics have created a company to buy OverPower. They've released an initial run of new cards featuring public domain characters, and have now obtained a few licenses for major intellectual properties. Those properties are undisclosed to the public, including the OP community at the moment, but Marvel, DC, and Image are their priorities and we strongly suspect they've got Marvel on board. Also funny to hear Theo say, as an example of game design and balance, that you can't just release a Galactus card called "Eat Worlds, Game Over," when unknown to him that's spot-on with what happened in the final OverPower expansion in the '90s. The infamous card "Devourer of Worlds" featuring an image of Galactus pretty much broke a major aspect of the game until it become banned from tournaments. Anyways, a little insight from mid-2024 for anyone who stumbles upon this video later on, very likely after the new OverPower releases hit it big (hopefully)!

Great episode, enjoyed this a lot. One small piece of feedback tho - I think the title is a bit misleading. This is more of an interview about Kryptic than a theory discussion about combat mechanics. I still would have listened to an interview about Kryptic, to be clear. And I think the episode was great. But definitely not what I was expecting from the title. I was expecting more of an overview of the existing landscape of combat mechanics and how they influence the design, what their pros and cons are, etc.

Thank you for the feedback! My goal is to do another (if not multiple) episodes on combat mechanics in the future. I agree that this episode was not nearly as expansive as it could've been, and I look forward to interviewing others about their perspectives. - Jay

For someone that made a game that is heavily, heavily inspired by DM (shield and mana mechanics being almost identical) this guy seems to have a lot of unnecessary hate for that game. Also I’m not sure he understands what qualifies as interactions during the enemie’s turn, because there’s plenty in Duel Masters…

Talking about Yu-Gi-Oh, there is an archetype called Mekk-Knight that all can special summon themselves to a field if two or more cards are in the same column. They also have spells and traps that negate card effects that are activated in the same column as a mekk knight. One of their monster's only effect (besides the special summon condition) is that he can move a mekk knight once per turn to a different column during either players turn. He's nicknamed move man
@TBPN6 ай бұрын
It's been interesting to see how Yu-Gi-Oh plays around with card positioning over the past few years. - Jay
@GeargianoXG6 ай бұрын
I guess one of the reasons TCGs is so often focused around combat is because it gives good justification for your character focused cards leaving the field at some point. Combat also makes a variable number of participants and interaction with the opponent necessary. For Non combat focused competition you're either completely focused on your own performance or the number of participants is highly regulated, so the framework just doesn't fit that nicely on a game that's about interaction and playing a variety of cards. It's of course not impossible, but it either requires a higher amount of abstraction (a character entering the field doesn't mean they are just now joining the game, but taking an active role, whereas them getting removed from the field is them getting in a bad position and not being able to act until they get played again) or creating a new framework or maybe non at all

I think every card game needs some sort of conflict, but I think we are seeing a lot more examples releasing now that use methods other than traditional combat to satisfy the conflict component of the game. - Jay

The pros of resource cards: -It feels good to have that tactile response when you slap down / discard a physical card representing your resource -A stack of resource cards you accumulated feels like a bigger accomplishment than a number on a dial -The resource cards can have their own flavour to them (fire, water, etc.) so your battlers can have more diverse costs to their attacks The cons of resource cards: -The game inevitably slows down a bit. Drawing a resource card and then attaching it costs the players a turn. -It makes your deck fatter. With no resource cards, your deck is going to be a sleek 40 cards or so. With resource cards it'll balloon to about 60. -Since resources are more scarce, players have less options turn by turn. They have to "build up" for much longer to get their options to open up. -If your game doesn't have strong "draw power," you run the risk of "drowning in" or being "been starved of" your resource cards Can be a pro or a con, depending on your opinion: -If your resource cards have "colours," Decks will inevitably fall into using one or two colours. This can be a con because it makes your deck less diverse but it can also be a pro because it gives your deck a theme, meaning players can latch on to a sort of "identity" based on their play style (I like harassing other players and denying their gameplay options so I'll use a "Dark" deck, I like rapid aggression and overbearing pressure so I'll use a "Fire" deck, etc.). I guess the absolute worst of both worlds would be a game that was colorless AND ALSO used resource cards. *shudder* I experimented with both systems in designing my own TCG and for me personally, I have a slight preference for the Pokemon/MTG route where resources are physical cards mixed into your deck. But it's a *very* close contest and I think both options are totally viable.

What about the DuelMasters/WoWTcg resource system which made every card a possible resource? It seems like the best possible of both worlds no? Every card in your hand can be played face down and generates 1 mana.

@@111nfinity That takes away the "element" (fire, water, etc) associated with energies, which some players think adds a little flavour to the game.

I think if you're making a digital card game, it's worth addressing why your game benefits from the artifice of 'cards' as the game pieces instead of tactical RPG units. To put it another way - why have a card of a sword instead of a sword? Not to imply that there's no good reason to make a digital card game, just food for thought.
