i stumbled into tribes in my mid 20's completely by accident. t2 was my entire life for several years ... if i wasn't working or sleeping, i was on cinci.rr renegades or houston vehicles ... and yeah, i was that heavy camping your gen.

Starsiege: Tribes is still my favorite game of all time. And despite the cesspool that was TribalWar, I met some of my best friends through that site. Brothers kyuss and synth who were groomsmen in my wedding. Later got a job working for Rasta. Joined a WoW guild that formed through TW, <STK>, and became friends with Adrenaline. Every FPS since has felt like a bit of a disappointment because Tribes was so far ahead of it's time. Great video, thank you.

The first day i brought home T1, i spent the next 72 hours playing it; i put several thousand of hours into it... A pain to play on U.S servers on 56.6k from Australia though :D

Omg see I used to play a ton of Paladins back then and when I was looking up what Hi-Rez had done before I saw Trives Ascend. I always asssumed that it was just a caveman MMO/RTS game or something and had no idea until rn that it was like this lol

About Tribes 1: What happened to Annihilation and Renegades? AFAIK Annihilation was the main mod during the years I played. You talk about it like LT was the only game in town.

great video! I never had the chance to play online with tribes 1 (my parents wouldn't let me play online at the time lol) I did have a lot of fun flying around and playing alone till I picked up tribes 2. Tribes 2 for me was amazing, I need to go check out Tribes LT it sounds like a blast!

Titles that try to tell me things about myself aren't cute, they're annoying. Tribes is a great game I thoroughly enjoyed, welcome to the 'Don't recommend channel' list

This is the most exposure tribes has had in quite a while. I did this video because I love tribes. If a clickbait title is enough to make you a hater, than I'm sorry I guess

I literally played Tribes2 Construction mod from 2004 to 2011. I barely played any of these other tribes games because they didnt really flesh out my preferred gameplay; base defence and assault.

I got in the Tribes with the Tribes 3 playtest, what a thrill to zoom accross a map with a target painted on my back and everyone trying to stop me! But getting in the Discord I saw the writing on the wall, the CEO wasn't going to make this a success, and damn from what this video says he really did as good as predicted at launch lmao. Very sad, mechanically I could tell this was a game I would have put time in to zoom in as a medium armor haha. Extreme power + zooming = dopamine. Disgusting that disk speeds got increased so much after launch, ew. For the record, I absolutely adore the Dino Blasters gamemode in Halo Reach on MCC, the gamemode I love the most is Boomball because my fav Halo weapon is the Reach grenade launcher. I just love leading shots kekw.

Ascend when it first came out was actually really good and had a chance to get big. The corporate mismanagement with the pay2win and the ridiculous costs and/or time to grind broken items was it's major downfall. Tribes purists didn't like some of the major design decisions like the regen, etc. but it was actually very balanced IMO, just needed better maps with more line of sight blockers.
@omgitsfishstixКүн бұрын
Ascend was fun. I had a bigger issue with it's physics than health regen or stripping out the need for inventory stations though.

I'll never forget my friend sitting me down at his PC with Tribes. Day turned into night real fast that day. Later on at massive LAN parties playing with maxed out teams a few times was amazing. I was never good at it but it was so much fun.

it's amazing to see where a lot of other game elements came from. planetside/2's classes and vehicles seem to be lifted almost whole-cloth from Tribes/2. Command and Conquor Renegade's base-management-based multiplayer is from Tribes. the high-speed aerial focused gameplay of Unreal Tournament is pretty much Tribes gameplay but simplified and on smaller maps...

If you listen to my interview with Scott Young blood (my most recent video), he talks with great pride about the games that were inspired/made possible by tribes. He also talks about how they did the same with Quake. Wouldn't use the term rip off as much as inspired.

Thanks so much for making this summary/docu of Tribes' history. I used to love Starsiege Tribes playing against legends like Alpha and Omega and zooming around the map. Later I've played Tribes Ascend but it didn't quite hit the same mark. All by all in terms of both defensive and offensive capabilities and balance I really think Starsiege Tribes nailed it best of all of the entries. And like a lot of other people in the comment section I was very surprised to learn that they have released a Tribes 3 lol

I need an APC pickup. So one of the things you kind of glossed past was "demo recordings" this was a super-minimal file format which effectively replayed the network events of a match, from the scope of a given player (net scoping is a feature of the network code). This allowed people to store, share, and replay matches without video recording, which simply wasn't feasible at the time. (It was also massively useful for debugging, FWIW)
@omgitsfishstix4 күн бұрын
100% I could have delved into this a bit more. Although demos were already around with Quake since 1996.

I bought the first Tribes game when I was a teen, working my first job. I remember that night installing the game around 7PM, played for a little bit, and then realized it was 4 in the morning... Seriously miss that feeling of just getting absolutely lost in a game.

I played a decent amount of Ascend, and was hugely disappointed when it was abandoned. The skill ceiling of the older games made it difficult for me to transition over to those unfortunately.

Something I recall that I didn't hear mentioned was the ability to record gameplay via a demo mode. That was the first time I had seen that and for me this was definitely what inspired the proliferation of frag videos. It also was when I started reviewing my gameplay regularly and improved a lot as a result. I recall building up quite a library of videos at the time. I'd never seen anything like that before.
@omgitsfishstix5 күн бұрын
Yeah demos were worth mentioning, although Quake had demos as early as 1996.
