My favorite books of the year so far are How We Named the Stars by Andres N Ordorica which is a beautifully sad coming of age story about a young gay Mexican American man. I also LOVED Jamie Ford’s Many Daughters of Afong Moy which is a fictional look at the potential generations of woman who came after Afong Moy, the first documented Chinese woman in the US. I read through Libby on my phone and have read SO many more books since I switched to that from physical books. Whatever works for you! 📚

I have to say that I prefer your videos (and you in general) to other content creators BECAUSE you read books by BIPOC authors. I'm so sick of hearing about all the mainstream books and I come to your channel for refreshing takes and recommendations as someone who is also racialized :)

I've seen Heather Fawcett's 2nd book in the Emily Wilde series in different Mid-Year Freakout Tag videos where people say that they were disappointed reading it. 😬 Front Desk by Kelly Yang is one of my favorite books of 2024 so far. Did you share your Silver Play KZbin button or did you receive your Silver Play KZbin button already?

2024 has been rough but my favorite would have to be Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant - it’s about mermaids and has a range of great rep in it! (Autism & physical disabilities, sapphic main characters, POC characters, …)

My favorite book so far of 2024 (and also the biggest surprise) is The Guncle by Steven Rowley. It's funny and poignant. I can't wait to read the sequel that just came out, The Guncle Abroad. My biggest disappointment for the year so far was Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross. I just didn't connect with the characters. Interestingly, I have previously had the same opinions as you on Emily Henry books. Beach Read was my favorite. I did not love Happy Place. But, I LOVE Funny Story, even more than Beach Read. I thought Daphne was adorable, and I appreciated that Miles was a different sort of male lead from her previous ones. I also really enjoyed the friendship with Ashley. You raise a good point about reading less diverse books by reading the ones that are traditionally more popular on booktube. I hope you can find a balance that you are happy with.

I love Finlay Donovan too! I thought it was going to be a cute little one and done and now we’re four books in. Haven’t read book four yet but it’s TBR. And book five comes out next year. Vero has a novella about her backstory that came out a while ago.

I recently finished Broken Earth trilogy by Jemisin. And it blew me away. "What's genocide?" "If every orogene is hunted down and slain, and if the neck of every infant orogene born thereafter is wrung, and if everyone like me who carries the trait is killed or effectively sterilized, and even the notion that the orogene are human is denied... that would be genocide. Killing people, down to the very idea of them as people". I just sat staring at the wall for a minute after reading this.

I'm on book #33!!! I just started book #33 today and I'm in absolute shock because my initial reading goal for the year, especially since I just got back into reading for fun after a 17 year reading slump, was 4 books. I breezed through that goal and kept going. I have really gotten into audiobooks a could months ago (especially if they are free) and that really boosted my reading productivity.

really loved this intro! so well explained and articulated. i’m so curious to see my own stats of whose books im typically reading. i’d imagine it’s overwhelmingly white because i do tend to read things that are widely popular and talked about, but i love the idea of intentionally reading from bipoc authors!! gonna try to do that for the rest of the year and see how it goes

I loved this mid-year review!! This year I've gotten back into fiction for the first time since I was a kid, and while I still loveeee a good memoir or nonfic read, I can't believe I spent so long away from fiction. It's been super fun exploring different authors and genres to see what I like now as an adult! I'm so stoked to have found your channel cause you share so many good recommendations that always seem right up my alley!! Also for what it's worth, one of the things I most appreciate about your videos the emphasis you place on reading and recommending books by authors of colour (and it fucking sucks that doing so affects your views and channel income!) Two of my faves from the year were ones you've recommended before -- I LOVED both A Woman Is No Man and What My Bones Know (okay fine the second one isn't fiction but STILL. That fucking BOOK! hahahaha) Some other faves so far: Fiction: - Bellies by Nicola Dinan - Cantoras and The Gods of Tango, both by Caro De Robertis - Greta and Valdin by Rebecca K Reilly - Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg (can be hard to find, but on the author's website there's a free online version or the option to have a copy printed-on-demand) Memoirs: - How Far The Light Reaches by Sabrina Imbler - A Mind Spread Out on the Ground by Alicia Elliott Nonfiction: - The Will to Change by bell hooks - Unlearning Shame by Devon Price Really looking forward to reading Kindred and Against the Loveless World! Thanks for another great video :)

Best Book: Middlegame by Seanan McGuire, living in my head rent-free since February. Best Sequel: Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir New Release Haven't Read: Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland Most Anticipated Release: Celestial Monsters by Aiden Thomas Biggest Disappointment: Evocation by S.T. Gibson Biggest Surprise: Honey & Spice by Bolu Babalola; I usually don't like romance, but this one HOOKED me and made me giggle and kick my feet. New Favorite Author: Ashley Poston (again, not a romance girlie but I loved her first two books) Fictional Crush: Stoker from the Veronica Speedwell series Favorite Character: Murderbot, from the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. Made Me Cry: N/A, it's not that easy XD Made Me Happy: the first four Murderbot Diaries books. Despite the high stakes, Murderbot warms my heart. Favorite Adaptation: N/A Most Beautiful Book: Either the UK cover of Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands, or the sprayed edge version of Five Broken Blades. Need to Read: Pretty much everything on my physical TBR.

Ok but did you like the books you read by white authors? That's all that matters, are we saying that books by white authors are not worth reading as a blanket statement? Like a white author could be from a poor background, or disabled, or represent another facet of the intersectional identity. So basing your opinion just on the author's race seems very narrow minded and not intersectional at all.
@bqsux5018
@bqsux5018 10 күн бұрын
Oh pleaseeeeee, this is not the take you think it is. And if you are looking for white authors, go look at videos and recommendations from quite literally most popular book content creators. The fact is white authors do much better than POC authors and their books are widely liked, bought and talked about in any book space more than POC AUTHORS. So if SHE wants to discuss other authors on HER channel, she has all the right to. You can leave, simple as that.

@@bqsux5018 She is obviously free to do whatever she wants. What she cannot do, is call herself an intersectional feminist, because she is clearly not and has no understanding of intersectionality. Your take is very exclusionary, but good luck on your reading I guess.

Imagine taking offense when a brown woman says she wants to get back into highlighting/focusing on POC authors instead of all the (over)hyped white authors. She has clearly stated enjoying many books by white authors and her saying she wants to go back to making space/time for poc authors doesn't take that away. This comment is giving white tears and is unnecessary

50% of what she read is already white authors. Even if she read 40 more books by bipoc authors this year, white authors would still make up 25% of her reading year. They are represented already? And she clearly liked books by white authors, even in just this video.
