This vid made me see an even faster first step, you can link a double length single chain then twist it onto the brass rod to do the first two rows. Thanks for the vid!

Its a great way of making a chainmail but it serves zero practical use since if a iron tiped arrow tryes to pierce into it.. these rings will open very easy.. same for a sword.. still very cool for decoration purposes

Learned how to make chainmail back in the late 80's. We used a large bolt and cut a groove in it to hold the wire and used heavy weight coat hanger wire. We also fed the wire through two pieces of wood chucked up in a vice to keep high tension on the wire while you spun it up on the bolt using a drill.

That's a good tip! Thank you

Since you’re making your own rings… once you have your first line connected, spin the next spring into the pattern and cut and close each ring as you go.

Thanks for this. I am thinking of making a chainmail blanket out of aluminum welding wire.
@Flynntastic6 ай бұрын
That sounds fun! Before you get started, you might want to know that Aluminum rings will not have the strength to stay together without being welded. It also creates a black residue from rubbing on itself that will get on everything it touches.

its not Chain Mail if the rings are not riveted.
@Flynntastic6 ай бұрын
Historically accurate armored chainmail, yes. But the Definition of Chainmail is simply: flexible armor of interlinked metal rings.
@tooldude10986 ай бұрын
The difference specifically would be riveted male versus butted male he made butted mail which is still a type of chainmail just not the one most people commonly think of

I used to do chainmail key chains on sale. One optimisation I found pretty quickly: 1) bend a peace of wire 150% of diameter of the wire to L shape. 2) put one end of the L inside the "spring" 3) start screwing the other side of the L through the coils of the "spring" 4) then cut the rings The L creates the gaps in the rings - big enough to easily join the rings together. You'll save much time on that - no need to bend the rings twice (1st to create a gap, 2nd to bind the ends together). Good luck!

@tooldude10986 ай бұрын
Sorry this is such a late reply you would join the plates together by lining them up side by side and connecting two rings on one side to the two matching rings on the other sheet
@whitelfner458210 ай бұрын
They make rings you can wear to use at least on one finger when closing the rings. I've only used 1, but you might be able to wear 2. juggling just 1 pair of pliers makes a huge difference since you can keep it in your hand!
Once you get the starter links on the rod in you helping hands couldnt you spin up another spring coil and instead of cutting the coils into individual rings couldnt you pull the spring apart and spin the entire coil through each starter ring, catching each ring as you go? Then cut the coilonce you've woven the spring through the starter rings. Then you could bend the rings shut. Youd skip benging them open as well as speed the linking process up significantly. Hopefully im thinking about how theyre linking together right and if i am, hopefully im explaining what i mean simply enough
@Flynntastic11 ай бұрын
That sounds like it's worth a try!
@streetpunk9911 ай бұрын
@@Flynntastic I hope that makes sense. It'd save you from handling individual links. Once they're spiraled through the previous row you can nip them free from the coil and crimp them shut. I think....
