Two more key points: 1) Our heart-in-the-right-place narrator/KZbinr begins by showing an ebike with its battery attached (as is usual) UNDER the rear rack but tells us that rack batteries are placed on ie. on top of the rear rack. So his words don't fit the image shown 2) I waited in vain for him to mention ebike KITS - standard in-wheel kits have major obvious flexibility and transferability advantages that full ebike manufacturers obviously would prefer you not to be thinking about or know about eg. it's easy to buy another competitively-priced battery from any number of generic battery manufacturers and you can likewise easily upgrade to a longer range aka higher energy-density battery. It's easy to transfer a kit to any bicycle(pushbike) with the same wheel size. And ebike kits for the front wheel are much easier to fit, to remove and the bike's front/rear weight balance / distribution is obviously far better - and all the commonly repeated claims that front-wheel drive ebikes/kits are more difficult to control etc are much exaggerated. They're only trickier to handle if you're a crazy off-roader who's forever rapidly twisting and turning in every direction - so that applies to about 1% of ebikers. Paul G

Can you switch batteries on an e-bike, to make it go faster, and ride for longer ??
@RobertBeriault753
@RobertBeriault753 Күн бұрын
This is a subject I'm not an expert on. But it is known that if you switch from a 48 Volt battery to a higher voltage one, such as 54 V, 60 V or 72 Volts, the bike will reach a higher maximum speed if the speed limiter is deactivated. As for how far it will go on a charge, that will depend on the capacity of the battery: how many Watt-Hours it contains, and of course, how you ride it!

The video just states the obvious. Doesn't mention for instance that by putting the battety inside the frame it makes it impossible to buy lower-cost replacement batteries from a wide selection of battery sellers as you can with external batteries. And if the in-frame ebike manufacturer disappears 3-4 years from now you'll have to find someone who can replace the individual cells in your old in-frame battery or figure out how to do the job yourself - or give up and buy a new ebike or attach an external battery to your formerly in-frame battery ebike that you originally bought because you thought it looked so sleek, slim and sleek - and just like a non-electric bike. The video uploader needs to seriously up his game... Paul G

1. Your comment just states the obvious - of course if you have an in-frame battery, you won't be able to easily buy a cheap knock-off replacement. 2. This video is obviously aimed at people new to Ebikes - it's in the title - "...Before Buying an Ebike." 3. Also, did you read the commenter before you? He even says that he wished he'd known this information before making his purchase. That's three strikes Paul. Rather than expend so much energy attacking an excellent and helpful video done by a small KZbinr, having just 11K subscribers, perhaps you'd be better served spending your time fact checking yourself before making unnecessary rude comments.

@Paul, I saw first comment and your response to @Bob-2023 two days ago and promised myself to respond. To begin with, I think you are correct that it will be a problem to find a battery replacement when many manufacturers go bankrupt in a few years. I have spoken about the dangers of buying cheap ebikes from fly-by-night companies and bicycle shops. However, your first comment completely missed a major point, which @Bob correctly pointed out: that my videos are aimed at new buyers that are new to ebikes. I thought that seems patently obvious. But you made things worse with your second comment by calling my viewers morons and half-asleep, when they are actually trying to educate themselves. I think you owe them an apology, don't you think?

I bought a fabulous e-bike x2 havoc step through last year. After 3 months the brakes started to squeal and screech. I cleaned the brakes and rotors with a degreaser. They were fine for a couple of rides and then they started to squeal again. I changed the brake pads. Same thing. I brought it to the store and Lampro decided to check age again the brake pads and the rotor. Same problem. I was wondering if you experienced the same problem.

I’m enjoying your straight to the point, informative videos on e-biking, thanks! Since laws vary regarding motor power, in the US, the most prevalent hub motor is 750W, and 500W for mid-drives. While it wouldn’t be apples to apples, I’d be interested in seeing a 750W hub drive on the same hill, but recognize this may not be possible in Canada. One other concern with the mid-drive motor using that much torque is the stress put on the chain. Unless you can do mobile chain repair (a good skill to acquire for long trips, I imagine), this is a consideration. Because hub drives work directly on the wheel, if you have a throttle, you can use it to get to a place where you can get the chain fixed, assuming you’re not riding far from civilization 😊. By the way, if the hub drive won’t get you up some slopes, and you’re concerned about the mid-drive overheating, sounds like you might need a motorcycle for the type of touring you’re interested in. What have you decided? Thanks again!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. There's no doubt that a motorcycle could climb any hill and I'd never have to worry about stalling in the middle of a big hill. But they're too fast for enjoying the scenery. Since I like going fast, I need a bike that can't allow me to do so. 32 kph or 20 mph is just right as a maximum.

Massive changes have been made to Bosch systems recently. I wouldn't buy anything else now! The 85Nm torque performance CX Gen 4 on the smart system is incredible. Everything can be adjusted in the app now, including speed, torque, and over-the-air updates and fixes. The new smart system and app are a pleasure to use. It's so user-friendly now with the Kiox 300 and 500 displays, and paired with the new Purion 200, it's a game-changer! You can also set an overrun if you need it, and it can be fully adjusted to the level you need. The new, simple walk-assist mode is a one-button push compared to the older, more complicated system. You definitely made the wrong choice with the low-torque motor and non-smart system. I highly recommend the new system. I won't touch anything else now, as they've pretty much perfected it. The new update in February 2024 made it even better!

I'm not really interested in solar because I usually will bring a reserve battery along with me I also have a battery charger that I can plug in at the cafe along the way or if I happen to be in a campground there is usually a place to be able to plug in the charger. Buying an ebike online is for people who can fix them. Many, while assembled, should be looked upon as a kit you can build into an ebike. The best you can hope for is that they will replace parts you can prove are bad. Expect that they will want videos or at least pictures. Some may ghost you. If you have the skills you can replace almost anything yourself from amazon. This is why I can buy from the lowest tier. I accept that I may be on my own. Your average Jane or Joe should probably stick to the big brands. Don't assume retailers or big box stores can help.

Fat tires are a marketing trend that the public fell for hook , line and sinker. They sell them as they are great for riding on snow , beaches and dunes. The majority don't EVER ride their bikes in winter and have never even seen a sand dune. And if you actually try to, you will quickly learn fat tires suck in snow and sand. They create more friction and actually slow you down and yes, more wear on a tire that costs more money to replace versus a regular 2.24 MTN bike tire. They add more weight too that you have to pedal. They look cool, that's why people get sucked in.

Hello Robert, My fat bike Chao-Ying's tyres (or whatever this miserable product is called) wears off mainly on the side walls. Eventually after riding on the stones and roots side walls rupturing giving way for the tube to bulge out. I have made mistake to buy those again (we are not spoiled by choices in NZ) after riding mainly on the tarmac in Auckland in the past and indeed I got the same wear pattern as yours. Now riding mostly off road in muddy and rocky volcanic terrain of lake Taupo and it wears off differently. I tried to repair the tyre by sewing with the dental floss and rubbing liquid rubber into it - it helped for a while until Juggernauts come from China...I will see with them but indeed you should not have knobby ones riding mainly on paved roads. - your particular wear pattern also suggest that you may keep pressure too high - try maybe lower and it should provide more contact spreading the wear. It may come on the expense of battery life of course but also give some more comfort and puncture protection.
@RobertBeriault753
@RobertBeriault753 2 ай бұрын
Sewing with dental floss? You have to be really creative! Your point about excessive pressure is probably right on. For the first year I was following the manufacturer's instructions and inflated my tires to 30 lb. Later, I found out that 20 lb should be the max and on snow in the winter, 8 lb works best.

Based on your calculations, in theory I would be able to be confident of a range of about 90km in fairly flat terrain, and about 64km in fairly hilly country. Add a full load out for camping, with about 35kg of luggage, I am thinking that I should be able to confidently plan for 70km and 50km respectfully. Is this a fair estimation?

To a large degree, it depends on how close the equator you're travelling. I found that two months after the summer solstice, I could get 15 km of extra range with my 100-Watt panel when towing my camper. If you live in the south, you're close to my latitude. If so, to calculate the total wattage you need, divide the distance you intend to travel in a day by 15 for the number of 100-Watt panels you'll need. At solstice it would be better, and in the northern tip of Queensland, you'd be doing much better. You might have the added advantage that Down Under, you probably have less cloud cover than in frigid Canuk country.
