For the most part, except in a pinch, Tesla owners have no reason to use anything but the supercharger network. They have much better coverage and locations, and their price to charge is much lower. Many public chargers charge 2x to 3x the rate that Tesla superchargers do. (Tesla owner with both a 2018 model 3 lr awd, and a 2020 model x which just returned from a trip from our home in SE PA, to Pahrump NV and back all on tesla superchargers while towing a camper trailer). Funny we just got a ccs upgrade to our model x upon our return anyway, and the mobile tech was trying to talk me out of it saying we will probably never use it as another upgrading owner never had to use ccs and that was the only other upgrading owner he new of. I told him thatI do prefer to be prepared and have it even if we may never use it, but what he said speaks volumes.

I agree about the behavior, but I disagree that that behavior is entirely based on valid reasons. Frankly, it seems like the biggest reason Tesla owners prioritize the Superchargers is because those are what are featured in the on-board route planner by default. Overall, the Superchargers do work best for Tesla EVs, but the Supercharger locations typically aren't the best. They often lack onsite amenities that are common with other CPOs. Tesla has brought the cost down for their owners and paid members, its true, but the difference in price doesn't always compensate for the reduced on-site amenities and services. Ultimately, I see a majority of EV owners becoming agnostic when it comes to charging away from home, using whatever is most convenient and available. That might still be the Superchargers, but either way, having a universal plug format makes that easier for everyone.

Question; I've heard Tesla's can do tow charging. Can the bolt/volt do that? Another Question can you run your AC while connected /charging at a charger?
@newscoulomb3705
@newscoulomb3705 6 күн бұрын
Yes, technically. Almost any EV can be "tow charged" by feeding energy back through the regenerative braking system; however, it's not recommended or even a good idea. It's dangerous enough towing a gas car like that (an EV is probably safer due to the regen braking), but you also run the risk of damaging the car or its components. Also, yes. I was running my AC basically the entire time this trip, even when the car was stopped or charging, because I had my dog and later my cat with me. You also don't have to turn the car off to plug in and charge.

Yes. some places like AAA offer EV roadside assistance. Realistically, any membership that offers flatbed towing can take your car to the nearest public charger. We used to see this a lot in the early days with Tesla owners having their cars flatbed towed to the nearest Supercharger.

I don't remember that from The Bible, but I've only read the King James Version. That being said, it's too late for EVs to have any real impact on climate change. The reason to buy an EV now is to avoid disruptions in the fossil fuel supply chains, to be able to fuel up your primary transport using energy you collect at your own home and property, and to have a vehicle that's 60% less likely to break down and 15 times less likely to catch fire than a gas car.
@raitchison
@raitchison 12 күн бұрын
IMO there's little reason to not keep the A/C on when charging Bolt via DCFC. Unless you're on one of those ~25kW chargers you're not going to be slowing your charge by using more power due to the Bolt's charging rate & curve. I guess technically on a 50kW charger under ideal conditions you might slow your charge by a very small amount for the first few minutes of the charging session. Slightly off-topic but would you like to know my theory as to why GM vehicles still can't use SuperChargers (other than the handful of Magic Dock sites)? IMO the poorly trained monkey that develop the steaming pile of excrement that is the My Chevrolet (or My Whatever) app can't figure out how to make the authentication and activation system work, so GM is holding up the entire process until they cobble something together (that won't work reliably). I surely hope when we're finally able to use SuperChargers that we'll be able to use the Tesla app to activate them because if we're required to use the My Chevrolet app I very much doubt it will be reliable enough that we could count on being able to charge at a SuperCharger.
@newscoulomb3705
@newscoulomb3705 12 күн бұрын
Anything after 45% battery, and I agree. At that point, there should be overhead available for the Bolt EV to run the AC without impacting the charging speed. Under 45%, and the penalty can be pretty severe. At least a 10-15% reduction in charging speed. For the Superchargers, that's a bit trickier. I know that GM software engineers were complaining about Tesla's lack of support, and at this point (at least for GMC EVs), the hold up is 100% on Tesla at this point. The vehicles themselves can already access the Superchargers, but the Tesla App still hasn't been updated to include them. Either way, an app should not be required for the Ultium EVs because they all support ISO 15118. To my knowledge, MyChevy family of apps does not include any sort of billing, which is why Autocharge on EVgo still requires the EVgo payment account to be set up. So for the Superchargers, all that should be required is the Tesla account which is paired with the GM EV. For the Bolt EV, it's still a question of whether Tesla will even offer it access. The lack of ISO 15118 means the Bolt EV/EUV will only ever be able to access the Superchargers by using the Tesla App, but again, the hold up is that the Tesla App will first need to be updated before that can happen.
@raitchison
@raitchison 12 күн бұрын
@@newscoulomb3705 Another thing I thought of, if it's warm enough that you are even considering running the A/C there's a very good chance that the battery is warm enough that the car will start conditioning/cooling the battery as soon as the charge session starts, so that A/C compressor is probably running anyways. I do agree that Tesla could technically update their app to allow any non-Tesla EV to use a SuperCharger but I would not be remotely surprised if Tesla's deal with GM says they can't for GM vehicles until GM gives the go-ahead, which GM won't until they can figure out how to add the ability to activate a SuperCharger in the My XXX app (which will probably work about as well as KeyPass™ did when that feature existed). GMs communication has been very clear and consistent that they expect (again, hopefully not require) that people will use only the My XXX app to activate a SuperCharger. I fully expect that unless GM can figure out how to _require_ the My Chevrolet app (in which case the SuperCharger network will still be for all intents and purposes unavailable to me) that I'll need to use the Tesla app to activate a SuperCharger and that's fine with me. Activating DCFCs via the charging network app has been BY FAR the most reliable way for me to DCFC, at least on the Bolt. The Tesla app will be just one more charging network app for me.
@newscoulomb3705
@newscoulomb3705 12 күн бұрын
@@raitchison Sure, but the Bolt EV also appears to have different parameters for cooling based on whether the car is on or off. Essentially, it will let the battery get warmer while charging if the car is off. Once you turn the car on, though, it does seem to more actively prep the battery by cooling, so if you're going to have the car on, yes, you might as well also be running the AC. For the Superchargers, GM has already given the go-ahead to GMC EV owners. They just haven't sent that out to the Cadillac and Chevrolet EV owners. Regardless, even though GMC EV owners have access (and yes, it is listed for them in the GM app), Tesla still hasn't updated their app to support GMC EVs. That's why those owners have to spoof driving a Rivian in the Tesla app in order to access the Superchargers right now.

Thanks! Cold PSI tends to be different than actual PSI. The placard calls for 38 PSI, which tends to be a generic number (1 PSI for every 100 lbs of vehicle weight). I usually inflate to 42 PSI cold pressure, which improves efficiency and reduces tire wear. The max cold PSI on the tire sidewall is even higher; however, while driving or in hot weather, that pressure can reach the high 40s or low 50s PSI.

Eric - regarding the broken Redding Turtle Bay Chargepoint dispensers impacted by the Rivian. I know people at REU and talked to Redding Electric Utility's EV charger coordinator. He blames Chargepoint and their electrical sub for a botched repair and then abandonment. He said the sub that showed up didn't seem to know much about electric chargers, and came prepared to replace two dispensers and repair the conductors to one dispenser, but found out the impact had disrupted the conductors connected to the second one, too. He left and no one from Chargepoint has ever returned. REU's staff sings nothing but praises for Tesla's teams that coordinate installation + do on-site servicing. Organized, efficient, prompt, professional. Explains the rapid installation of the 44-V3 dispensers at the Holiday Inn on Hilltop just across I-5 from Turtle Bay.

Yes, I figured it was a botched repair, but in terms of the subcontractor, I wonder what they reported to ChargePoint. They might have told ChargePoint a very different story about REU, so I would hope that the REU EV coordinator reached out to ChargePoint directly. So far, what I've seen in Northern California hasn't led me to trust the utilities much, either. The Pilot-Flying J site I visited in Weed was completed the exact same weekend as the V4 Supercharger site in Weed, and the power drop for the PFJ site had already delivered to the utility. Somehow, though, the Supercharger site is already up while the utility still hasn't turned power on to the PFJ location, which indicates to me that the utility themselves are the issue. I don't know whether palms are getting greased, but Tesla certainly seems to be getting much better treatment and support from the utilities than other the charging providers, including those who have proven themselves competent in the past. Heck, even Electric Era (which is a CPO started by former Tesla employees who worked on the Superchargers) is months behind schedule on all of their Northern California builds.

Different world up there, I guess, when you see how much infrastructure is between Sacramento and LA. This sort of reminds me of the Portland, ME to the mid-Atlantic situation. Long time EV enthusiast but first time owner (since Jan). Bought a 2019 Bolt with the replaced battery. I’m surprised the number of (non-Tesla) EV owners that don’t know about PlugShare or ABRP. I stopped at an EA and chatted with another Bolt owner who has had her car for 3 years and was getting ready to trade for a PHEV because she hated how long it took to charge to 80% on DCFC. I recommended instead she look at an EGMP car if she road trips a lot but seriously consider ABRP. I rarely charge my Bolt past 60% on road trips because that’s usually enough to make it to the next charger with about 10%. I’ve been following your vids on and off for a while so I know you’ve had GOM issues since having the battery replaced. Personally I have put 10k miles on my Bolt in 7 months driving all across the western US (even through Yellowstone!) and haven’t had an issue. I’ve had it at 100% and “Propulsion Power Reduced” but never had that sharp drop off like you experienced here. I wonder if the dealer didn’t update the software on your car? Or maybe there is some underlying difference between the 2017 and 2019. I have noticed my car must have a fairly large top buffer because even at 100% SOC I can still get about 15 kW of regen but when it hits population reduced it’s practically dead. Also just curious: when the 2017s and 2018s got their batteries replaced, did GM also swap hilltop reserve for target charge level? I never found out.

The first town I charged in still doesn't have a Supercharger because Tesla stranded $1.6 million in public funding earmarked for chargers because Tesla stated that it would be impossible to install equipment that met California's regulatory requirements for the price Tesla quoted (the underbid several other prominent public charging providers to win those grants).

I'm surprised you don't know this being such a veteran Bolt driver (at least didn't appear to when looking at the DIC) but the way the battery bars are displayed on the Bolt, each "bar segment" is worth 5% and the Bolt "rounds up" to the nearest 5%. As soon as it "ticks down" to a given number of bars, the battery is at exactly 5% * the number of remaining bars and will remain that way for the next 5% of the battery (visually "over-estimating" remaining percentage slightly). You were showing three bars when you pulled in to charge, which meant you were somewhere between 10% and 15% when you plugged in. The Chargepoint display corroborated this when it reported 14% once the handshake completed. The only ways to get an accurate read (closer than 5%) on the battery when _not_ plugged into a DC fast charger (that I know of) are to use an OBD reader to pull the percentage or to query it via the mobile app (if you still have an active plan).

@@siberx4 I'm not sure what you are saying I didn't understand about that? I'm aware that each bar represents 5% battery, but I use the DCFC for an exact SOC percentage. In terms of OBD2 readers, that is a possibility; however, they sometimes include gross capacity, which can also throw things off a bit.

Eric, the low output power on the ChargePoint charger you observed may very well be due to hot weather: I ran into a similar situation in 29 Palms, CA. It was mid morning and the ambient temperature was already about 100F, but I couldn't get more than about 18-20kW out of the charger. Yet, I have been there in the afternoon on hotter days and have been able to get the full 55kW (for my Bolt). The culprit I believe is that the charger is on the east side of a building and the hose gets full sunlight all morning (and gets too hot to touch). In the afternoon it's in shade. That spooks the charger controller into derating the power. Or, maybe it's something else entirely...

I have a bolt. I live in an apartment without L2 access so i only DCFC right now. Take time to get familiar with the infrastructure in your area. Give up the L2 for a month and go out and rely on the fast chargers. This will build your knowledge, familiarity and confidence in the network. You'll know where to go, when to go and best of all where not to go.

Even if not an emergency, I simply do not have time to deal with outages like that. We have a model 3 with chargers everywhere here but if that wasn't the case I would have to pass on EV for now. Should improve (I hope).

Yeah. Tesla finally started improving their coverage in Northern California a couple years ago, which is good because it means that when they eventually open the Superchargers, most of their sites in Northern California will be available to non-Tesla EVs (they are mostly V3 and newer sites). There are still some major gaps in the Superchargers (for example, neither of the towns with the EVgo chargers I used have Superchargers), but it still isn't bad. EA is the one that needed to handle their build out better. They should have already had at least two more sites open on I-5 between Willows and Yreka, so when they took the old Anderson site down for hardware replacement, it would only be a minor inconvenience as opposed to the major impact it's currently having.

Flaw in that narrative is if your ICE vehicle is out of gas or very low in a power outage you're just as screwed. Lots of fuel in stations all in underground tanks. That's one of the reasons I switch ed to a Jeep 4Xe plug in hybrid.

Eric, at 9:35. You say those batteries are for battery back up. I was wondering if you know that to be the case. I would assume they are purely for Peak shaving and if the site lost power, those chargers would not be operational. Having it due actual battery back up can be substantially more Electronics and high power inverters. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a great thing to keep their costs in check and not create excessive load on the grid.

Good point. I must have misspoken there. As you say, I don't think these are set up to actually function offline but rather only as peak shaving.

@@newscoulomb3705the peak-shaving thing blew my mind the first time I heard it. Some systems are just designed to optimize for demand charges not for grid independence.
