That was fun! :) Days of Abandonment was my first Ferrante and still is my favourite although I haven't yet read My Brilliant Friend. Reading her I do refuse to believe that she might actually be a man - there are clues that apparently link her to Domenico Starnone - having said that, I've read his novella Ties and it gave me a lot of Days of Abandonment vibes...) Drive your plow is awesome, I'm super intimidated by Books of Jacob but I have a lot other Tokarczuk books on my TBR (as I'm Polish, I have a lot to choose from, I really should read BOJ though, it's just SO BIG). I don't think I will ever read War and Peace no matter what everybody says. Yes, my fear of big books is real.
@theeconstantreader
@theeconstantreader 28 күн бұрын
If Elena Ferrante is a man, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself 😂 For War and Peace - maybe find an edition that splits the book into different volumes! The writing itself seems so contemporary that it really is just the size that’s intimidating, you can do it, I believe in you!

Hi Catherine! Oooooh weee. Days of Avandonment. Yes to everything you’re saying! I agree that the reason this book was semi triggering for me is because it’s so real!😲😳😳Elizabeth Bowen….an enigma! Death of the Heart, which I read last Summer, took awhile to hook me up with. I stopped and restarted. And then I enjoyed it. But yeah, I think her books are Marmite-y . I would agree The Death of the Heart is more approachable.

I recently listened to the BBC radio dramatisations of the George Smiley novels by John Le Carré, and they are great spy thrillers! Espionage is such a cool theme but difficult to get right it seems. Certainly comes through that Le Carré worked at MI5 during the Cold War. We don't have Libby in the UK so I'm not sure of it is on there, but Audible has the whole collection available as one audiobook. I would highly recommend it! The radio adaptation is great because you get a cast of actors, and they're condensed so they are only a few hours each. Capitalisation is a great way to emphasise concepts, I liked how it was done in '1984'. 'Drive Your Plow' has been on my shelf for a while now, I shall pick it up this month! 'War & Peace' likewise has been staring me down, I have been waiting to read it through winter but I might have to pick it up sooner :) Cool video, thanks!

I'm Polish and so happy you liked Drive Your Plow! I've read lots of Tokarczuk's books and this one's definitely in my top 3. I also recommend the two other novels which were reprinted/translated for the first time after she won the Nobel prize, and are now available in most bookstores - Books of Jacob and Flights. Those two were translated by Jennifer Croft, who did an amazing job, to the extent that I enjoy reading them in English as much as I do in Polish haha (I'm also an English major so did that at first to look at stylistic differences between the two versions and I was not disappointed!). Books of Jacob is around 1000 pages, and it's historical fiction (set mostly in the 18th century) with lots of characters and settings and so it's quite an intense read - probably also because the naming of characters (from different cultural/ethnic/religious backgrounds) seems to be confusing readers who don't speak Polish. From the blurb and not to spoil the plot, it's about a messianic religious leader of mysterious origins who arrives in a village in Poland, as well as about the changes he inspires across the continent and not only amongst his followers. Flights is also amazing (and shorter) so you can check out the blurb! Drive Your Plow was translated by a different author, who also did an amazing job, and translated a couple of Tokarczuk's other books, which are mostly out of print in English, but available in libraries. My favourite is probably House of Day, House of Night, which is written, as well as Flights, in her unique and very much recognisable style - vigniettes about different characters and short, almost short story-like chapters, with the topics alternating. Definitely not a short story collection though, as they are all connected to the theme and often with their stories collectively resolved. House of Day is about the lives of the inhabitants of a small village in the Polish mountains, near the borders with Czechia and Germany, stories not limited to the current timeline of the main narrator though. Such a long comment but I love seeing others enjoy Tokarczuk's work!

- The Hearing Trumpet: sounds pretty sick. I'll have to check it out. - House of Leaves: would be sad to get a perfectly-fine version that lacks all the magic. Like (imo) what happened with Emma Donoghue's Room, where the movie does everything right and still fails to capture what made the book great, which was its representation of Words and Thought. - Infinite Jest: one good "adaptation" is the Kindle version where you can click footnotes as links, search for names, hit the back button, etc. I wonder if someone could nudge that a step beyond and really make the hypertext hyper. - Needs another shot: Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels. The movie had a bad case of "gotta hear both sides" and is mostly famous for being long. Whereas when I think of the book I think of its strong point of view, even to the point of inserting a character to stop and say hey guys, this is what the theme is. - Impossible to film: most Clive Barker stories. When he's pulling you along on pure poetry, and you stop to think about how the scene would actually look in physical space... it's awkward. Maaaybe Julia Ducournau could do something with the awkwardness.
