This brought me back to the early day’s training my GSD to be my PSD. Then he was attacked by a dog in a “pet friendly store”. Set us back almost a full year! WE GOT THRU IT and now he’s the best!! Non reactive. People are always amazed at how calm a GSD can be. ✨💛

In the US service dogs are like a fun luxury item anyone can get and train themselves, even if you just get orthostatic syncope from standing up too quickly or something. Meanwhile in Germany, they're literal state registered, ID-having, medical professionals that guide the blind or help the paralyzed. It's such a drastic difference.

Disabilities come in a lot of forms, and the most common kind of service dog is for psychiatric disabilities from what I’ve seen. Taking a dog everywhere is not easy or fun, and disabilities can be invisible. I’d recommend you learn about invisible disabilities, that don’t show on the outside but can seriously affect quality of life.

Most people with these service dogs just want attention. I know a few people who walk around with their dog and act offended when someone wants to pet the dog. What's sweeter than a little girl wanting to pet a doggy? This is a foolish post😢

Service dogs costs thousands of dollars. Plus, they can get distracted from their obligations if they're pet. Your comment is non-sense.

It doesn't matter whether it's a service dog or not. You don't touch strange animals. That's extremely intrusive. You don't want to be touched by strangers yourself. I always tell my children: first ask the owner if you can and then explain the rules on how to approach the animal in question and how to show that it's OK for them. Not every animal wants to be touched.

Am I the only one who gets really annoyed when I watch those TikToks of people literally screaming at parents when their kid pets a service dog. My family raises and hosts service dogs and I understand the upsetting part, but like.. it’s not the parents fault. Sometimes kids do things, and it’s better to move on than to scream in a store.

Happy holidays. I always enjoyed video from you guys. That’s great that Mars did so well around the security dogs. Does he know crowd control? I find it’s one of my dogs most useful tasks when I’m standing in line for an unusually long time and people getting near me or really starting to become bothersome.

Great job Mars on alerting faster than your watch. I have a service dog but not for medical alert and I always wondered how can you tell the difference between him licking you in general and him licking to indicate an alert?
@marsservicedog18 күн бұрын
he was never trained to associate licking as an alert behavior, so I don't see it as indicating an alert at all :)
@asecretcourtofcrowsandcloc408418 күн бұрын
@ oh that makes sense. I have been thinking about trying to add some alerts to my dog’s tasks but wasn’t sure what the most simplest behavior would be to use as a Q, which did you find to be the most useful for him? I’ve heard some people say they use a dogs paw and others to say a nose nudge.
@marsservicedog18 күн бұрын
@ for mars, a nose boop was the most easy to teach but I've taught him "touch" from an early age so it's often his go-to behavior when he's unsure what I want from him. You could try a boop, but honestly it's whatever works for you and your dog!

Understanding they are kids but parents need to teach their kids to always ask before petting any animal in control of their owners especially a service animal, i was always told by a service person with a dog in their vests they have to have the full attention to their handlers being in stores is already distracting enough for them but in their vests they are working, she was very sweet I was really young when I sat down and talked to her she told me she has seizures and she showed me how her dog signaled her and asked me to stay a distance and give her a few minutes and she’ll come back and talk to me, I cried because it was scary seeing that but she told me there are different reasons for a person to have a service animal but this is my reason, and after that she allowed me to pet her dog she gave me a hug and thanked me for being respectful when I approached her I never asked to pet her dog I asked her his name and the conversation started from that it was a beautiful scary experience but I’m so glad I did
