Great video of your flying. I too am a Hang Glider pilot. I use to live in Coeur 'd'Alene, ID but moved to Missoula, MT about 12 years ago. I've been flying for about 15 years but my work got in the way too much to be real consistent. But that has changed and now I have the time to get serious again. Is Cliffside a relatively new flying site? It look like its in the Gorge area?

I flew there in the 70's and 80's. We called it Pollution Point because of the active aluminum plant at the bottom of the ridge. In winter the plant kicked off nice thermals and we'd work them on totally overcast days. You really didn't even need a vario. When you smelled the pollution from the plant, start circling. We always launched off a gravel area right off the highway, one step takeoffs like Makapu, Oahu where I'd go to fly every winter on vacation. These days I fly a Long EZ which is in the little blue circle on the left.... smoke on.

Thanks for your comment. When I first started flying at Cliffside in 2000, all pilots were required to sign in at the Goldendale aluminum plant, and the launch site was right by the road. It's amazing how much the area has changed, but the soaring experience remains just as incredible.
@99bx99Ай бұрын
@@rickskater On one special sunny winter day I flew in back of launch to the mountain and found that I could fly upwind in a straight-line gaining altitude from the thermals coming off all those rocks below. I kept going and climbing till I could see Goldendale. By the time I flew back and landed, despite wearing ski mittens and a snowmobile suit I was pretty hypothermic. I'm now 80 and the last time I flew was 4 years ago. I took an old UP Condor to Cape Kiwanda (where I learned to fly) and soared the dune for an hour to make sure I could still do it. Also, I gave a kid five bucks to pack my glider to the top of the dune for me.

Thanks for posting. Is it always so dry there? Or does it get green during rain season?

Beautiful site to fly. The rotors behind those wind turbines must be massive though, wouldn't want to get there. Also, please include launch - its super useful for me as novice HG pilot
@rickskaterАй бұрын
Yes, those rotors are big but we keep a safe distance away from them. Sometime I forget to turn on the camera until airborned !

you need to get in touch with Hang Gliding Oregon school. first. The training site is in Pacific City Cape Kiwanda beach. Another option is go down to Calif.

How long have those wind turbines been there? Their wake turbulence must make very dangerous to go xc downwind in thermal days, since you gotta make sure to clear a long distance if you must land... also top landings are certainly tricky in the approach
@rickskater2 ай бұрын
I believe those turbines have been there for over 20 years. We always maintain a safe distance from them. Hang gliders can land on top of the wind farm behind, or between the turbines. My friend Neil has accomplished landing between moving turbines. Wow, cool place! I've sailed at Rufus and didn't even know it was there. I assume it rarely works in the summer due to West winds in the Gorge? When's the best season for it, and how predictable / reliable is it?
@rickskater2 ай бұрын
Hi! We've flown this site for 30+ years. It's open year round and works well when the wind direction is from the East , SE or ESE. Additionally, the narrow ridge above the radio towers, facing west works on west wind days too.

Thanks for the compliment ! I opted for 1080p mainly to keep the file size more manageable for quicker uploads and smoother streaming. But I’m considering uploading in full 2160p for future videos to capture even more detail.

@@rickskater If possible, record it 60 frames per second in 4K. Upload the full 2160p at 60 frames per second. KZbin will produce various resolution choices for the user. It's also pretty good about picking the best resolution based on the bandwidth of the viewing device.
