I don't think evangelicalism ever lost anyone that didn't really and truly believe those points. I think it's more that they want to cram their beliefs down everyone else's throats and just cannot allow us to think the way we think and live the way we live. I think it's the fact that they aren't getting their way and they're just overtaking everybody's life to be the way THEY want life to be.

I get the motivation behind the question about how to interact on a level playing field with Christians who are more focused on eternal/ethereal issues. It's funny because I think David Gushee's disagreement is well-founded and accurate, so how can both be true? My amateur answer is influenced by Daniel Hummel's book The Rise and Fall of Dispensationalism. I think there are still strong vestiges of "Left Behind" thinking in our collective imagination and when it's more convenient to focus on "saving the soul" vs "tending to physical needs" folks can easily revert to the former. And then dance back and forth as it suits them. Hummel mentioned that Tim LaHaye concocted a new eschatological facet, where Christians can play a role in holding back the coming judgment, which went hand in glove with the Moral Majority. It reminds me of how Hitler's scapegoat had to be simultaneously weak and powerful - powerful enough to be perceived as a threat by aryans, yet weak enough for Hitler to subdue. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else understands/sees it this way.

Reminds me of the Evangelical efforts in the 1860s to make the US Constitution more Christian as a response to the Confederate Constitution which used more obvious religious language.

I'm on a crazy journey after almost 40 years of being alive. After feeling isolated by both the Church for my orientation and the LGBT for my faith, Satan was waiting for me there in that loneliness and in a moment of vulnerability 2 months ago, I realized how far gone I'd become and I fell to the kitchen floor crying. I wanted to die. But Jesus was also there in that loneliness and He is why I made myself get back up.

the problem is answering the questions WHERE and WHEN. Pronunciation not only varies over TIME but GEOGRAPHY. Even if we say "first century AD" we know that Palestine pronounced differently than Alexandria than Athens, and so on. It seems to me that there is no right answer, so we just have to pick one. How do we properly pronounce English? WHERE???? London, Leeds, Scotland, Boston, Atlanta, Auckland? Even within a country there are regional accents ("we know you were with him because you have a galilean accent." Pittsburgh and Philly sounds quite different from each other.) I am grateful for the amazing work that so many (like Kantor) have done. But at the end of the day, we're just making decisions that work for us, right? There can't be a "right" answer for what is "authentic."
