I think Gege is a great mangaka. He might have some problems with linework, character design, and pacing, but he has a clear grasp of composition, mechanics, and writing gripping, tense action set piecies. I think his main problem is the format: not manga, but Shonen Jump and the serialization schedule. A lot of Gege's failures with JJK can be explained specifically by the stresses of not only writing a chapter of Manga every week but also keeping weekly readers invested. He's clearly a writer who struggles with this format's specific challenges, and his story has also been forced to be something it's not or that it shouldn't be. The high school setting is what comes to mind immediately even though clearly that isn't where Gege wants to be. The popularity of certain elements in the demographics of Shonen Jump readers are clearly intruding on the story Gege wants to tell. Eichiro Oda thrives in this kind of setting: both because he's the kind of creative mind who can indulge himself in these popular story elements in addition to the fact that he's comfortable in his position as the king. One piece doesn't have to worry about getting axed. Less popular series do. There's pressure from outside the writing process to pace the story quickly so as to get it over and done with. Gege obviously feels this pressure immensely and is almost paranoid about letting the story sit still and wait to expand on its depth, even if it might add something to his story. Bleach's ending was extremely abrupt because of editorial meddling forcing Tite Kubo to get on with it before Bleach go cancelled, and even really good stories have ended up on the chopping block of Shonen Jump in less than 50 chapters, a year and change of serialization. That said, I don't think JJK is bad. At points, it's brilliant, but Shonen Jump Magazine slots are a precarious situation that Gege is clearly not comfortable in, and I am actually very interested in what he'll be doing once it's done and he can move on to something more his speed.

Gege could kill every character off screen and gloss over every unresolved plot thread and I wouldn’t feel a shred of emotion or disappointment, in fact I think I’d feel relieved because as it is the half assed way it tries to get me to care about anything that happens actually feels kind of insulting. Obviously the response to such a profound apathy is to stop watching/reading (and I have) but as long as it’s still talked about in the terms that it is now I’ll be completely bewildered that people have so much to say about it.

My biggest issue with the manga is the cliffhangers they are literally the worst ive read in any series they end up being a nothing burger 9/10 times. Chapter 268 we have to save Yuta final page, Chapter 269 second page Yuta is fine and back in his own body literally why does he keep doing this dont even do the cliffhanger if there is no payoff just ugh why does he keep doing this he has the best selling manga he doesnt need to add fake hype so infuriating

i tried my best, its js kinda boring though. every other anime has this plot; main character gets powers, goes to school with other ppl who have powers, almost every episode is js fighting (the boring kind), character that the protagonist cares for dies or is in danger, more fighting, even MORE FIGHTING JESUS CHRIST DUDE

This critique is pointless after Nobara being revealed to be alive in chapter 267, potentially both Yuta and Gojo in chapter 269 after chapter 268's cliffhanger, and Maki eat Sukuna's black flash like 5 stars meals. Jujutsu Kaisen just turned into Disney Kaisen trash where everyone alive with ZERO consequence. I bet Choso and Yuki alive as well next chapter, via a binding vow. Absolute TRASH! Where is my dark shonen go?
@reeses7839

I think ironically that makes this critique even more poignant because if those characters were going to be alive anyway, why go through all that trouble? They're not getting development or characterization. It's a hollow, "They're okay, guys!" and nothing else. It didn't allow people to get invested or stay invested in a lot of the characters, and it failed in satisfying the people who wanted a darker, more gritty Shonen. Who was it for, then?

I find it weird how you brought up modern Shonen trying to be subversive and one of the examples shown was Black Clover… Black Clover is anything BUT subversive and it prides itself on that. It’s so not subversive that it often gets flack for “copying” past Shonen.

Aint gone lie, i dislike the hell out of jjk. Its just everything wrong with anime but raised to power 1000. Over the top, slap stick humor. Gimicy characters. The over zelous main protag that has unreasonable goals and is always so hyper positive. Fight scenes where the fighters in stead of claping each other, spend minutes explaining the fight. World building that doesnt feel grounded. For christ sake! I kept hearing of the hype of the show and i have always been curious. Was looking forward to knowing what all the hype was about. Only to finally watch it and be left with nothing but a deep sense of disappointment.

OK, I think I can sum up everything wrong with the series finale in less than a few sentences of text. First and foremost, Deku/ Izuku Midoria, begun the story of the entire franchise by boldly stating (at least in the anime), "this is the story of how I became the world's greatest hero." And all throughout the series, we the viewers were baited into thinking that was how he was going to end up at the end. However, the epilogue chapters shows Deku not only losing all of his powers and quirks but is working a menial job as a teacher instead of being a hero saving people like his classmates are in present day. We the audience, readers and viewers alike got conned into thinking Deku was going to be the best hero in the world. But instead, we get Deku working a teachers desk job. This is just one of an entire list of plot threads and foreshadowing that was built up and never payed off in the story. Along with Deku not being "Number 1" we have numerous points of relationships being foreshadowed. Ochaco developed feelings for Deku but there was Todoroki and Momo, Kaminari and Jiro, Toru and Ojiro, and Kirishima and Mina all being hinted at in some way vague or otherwise, "being an item" romantically. And honestly, while I certainly can't speak for anyone else, I would have been able to accept the series ending as is if it weren't for the other "broken promises" the series made and never delivered on. Like what happed with Deku's dad never showing up even once in the Manga or anime? And who was that mysterious/shadowy figure that was teased all throughout the epilogue chapters? Seriously, Kōhei Horikoshi himself said on record in interviews that he planed to introduce and explore Deku's dad sometime before the series ended. And yet here we are, with the epilogue and final chapters released and Deku's father is still nowhere to be seen. And that unknown person, to my knowledge is still a mystery. Not even the author seems capable of delivering of his own statements. The fan pairing and Deku's dad being a noshow are bad in their own right but aren't real dealbrakers for me personally. However, both the anime and manga promised its fans that Deku would become "the world's greatest hero" by the end and Deku is left at desk job while his classmates got to become real heroes. For real, this is as unsatisfying as can be. Deku said he was going to be the very best and come the final chapter, isn't even an active hero fighting on the front lines? Is it any wonder why people are upset over the way MHA ended and wrapped up? There is no doubt a ton of stuff I completely glossed over but I think we can all agree that Deku becoming "powerless" after he sacrificed so much and worked so hard was a bad call. And no, just because he got an Ironman mech suit doesn't make things better nor does it change the fact that Deku spent 8 years as a mere teacher instead of making his lifelong dream a reality.

JJK gets you invested with the PROMISE of deep characters ..... aaaaand then it's gone. There are many, but the one that really stands out to me are Gojo and Geto. Specifically, the scene right before Gojo's imprisonment when he speaks to Geto's body and asks whether he'd really let another control him, causing the hand to spasm and try to choke out Kenjaku. It was such a tantalizing setup: the thought that Geto was still in there, reacting to Gojo's voice. Geto turned evil before being taken over by Kenjaku, so I wasn't expecting some glorious return/redemption, but I AT LEAST expected a Gojo vs Kenjaku/Geto fight before the end. Instead, Gojo and Kenjaku die in separate battles and all we get is Gojo meeting Geto in terminal limbo 😐
