The library is just too poor…kindle is always the safest, most complete option

Can send your own ebooks, pdfs to the kobo? 'cause I never imagined how wonderful the kobo is, but now I'm definitely considering changing my e-reader ( in the near future), and this feature is one of the most important to me.

I just bought the Kobo Clara BW and it has a web browser, which means you can get to Goodreads and other websites you might have interest in using the ereader.

I've loved The Storygraph instead of goodreads--it even has a tracker for the amount of days you've read, and a "paused" and "DNF" option

I just got a Kindle for the first time over a year ago, and although I've loved the experience, I really want this Kobo now 😭 It has all features I've always wanted! I'll probably have to wait another year to justify it though

Had a look at switching to kobo before. Honestly can't really recommend it personally given the smaller bookshop, the generally higher prices for books compared to amazon and the lack of an ability to upload your own ebooks wirelessly. Its a shame as I think there needs to be more competition in the ebook space. The lack of usb-c on most kindles until now has been infuriating - as has Amazon's decision to discontinue buttons.

I switched to Kobo last year too for the same reasons and never looked back! I think I use it everyday and I love not supporting Amazon. Libby has been incredible

I am a US user and I have an Oasis. imho, it’s the best kindle because of the buttons. I’ve been looking into getting a Kobo recently. You are absolutely correct that kindles are slow and klunky (though I think you said janky😉). The Kobo you have looks great, but I wouldn’t know how to get the thousands of kindle books I have onto the Kobo. That’s the only reason I haven’t switched yet. I’m old and not very technically savvy to figure out calibre that everyone is talking about. Thanks for your informative video!!

The NZ Kobo uses Overdrive (rather than Libby) to access the local library. Personally I like the ways that you can personalise many of the features on the Kobo. the standard two-finger spread geature to change the font is handy too. Also that you can turn the reading stats, etc, off as I have no interest in that sort of info, I'm just readiing. FWIW, The front cover of the Kobo sleep case I have for my Kobo folds into a handle/table stand, so there is no need for a pop handle or similar 3rd party accessory

My biggest issue with Kobo is its life cycle. They discontinue their Kobos too quickly and they last maybe 3-5 years before dying.

I put a tiny little sticky tab on the back of the stickers to keep them in one place without “using” the sticker. The tabs easily and cleanly peel off of the device afterwards, so no sticker residue.

Wow! I would get the Kobo for just the annotating feature lol. But in all honesty, I love my kindle. I'm 16 and my Kindle is 10, so it's been with me or a while. The battery is still great, like it lasts me ~ 20 hours right now...and trust me I have used that thing so much!

The Libby thing is also why I gravitated to Kobo. (I'm in Canada) I also went with colour Kobo for the highlighting and covers, lol. So, solid reasoning 😅. I went with the Clara instead of the Libra because I prefer the smaller size. I did make the switch from Goodreads to Fable. I definitely recommend taking the plunge. Great video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! The pros and cons were bang on.

The Kindle is sooooo disappointing. I''m old enough at 57 to have been an adult when computers became a thing we own in our homes and we've always had Apple products. Apple products are sophisticated and user intuitive. I never imagined an e-reader could be so clunky and unintuitive but the Kindle proved it can be a little more than a brick. I find the lag between when I click and when it responds to be the most frustrating thing about it but it isn't all. It annoys me that I can't quick and easily move read books off my home screen. I have a magazine I purchased years ago and I cannot get rid of it. I will never look at it again and it annoys me soooooo much sitting on my home screen. I stick with the Kindle because it's so much easier on my eyes than any other computer I've ever used and eyestrain has become an issue as I get older so I need to stay with Kindle until someone makes a better device with great topicals. I'm thrilled to know there is something else out there.

I'm loving this but what program does kobo use to buy books and download on it? cause I feel like since the kindle is by amazon and amazon has tons and tons of books, I'm kinda worried about the kindle having limited books or not as much books I'm interest in on the kobo

I got a Kindle in the pretty new matcha colour before Christmas because I'd only ever read on my iPad or IRL books prior. I love that it isn't damaging my eyes the way the iPad screen would over time, but I do find that it's pretty slow. I do love that if I have EPUB files I can use the Amazon site to send it to the Kindle, because I do sometimes use another site that's probably not great for legality reasons so I don't need to be purchasing straight from Amazon and linking my books only to Amazon. My bf is interested in getting an ereader so I'd be pretty keen to see if he'd be interested in the Kobo or not. I also love your vibes and your apartment is super pretty :3

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. Last year, when I was traveling, I had a terrible experience with the Kindle Paperwhite Update. My Kindle died in a matter of days when I left it asleep, compared to a month when I wasn’t using it. And when they removed subscriptions for paper and magazines, it was just another major annoyance. I was considering getting a Scribe, but the cost and limitations for note-taking turned me off. Libby was also a huge factor - how this is restricted in Australia really disappointed me. While I was thinking about getting a Kobo, I think for my needs and the cost difference, the new iPad mini does what I need it to in a similar size. I still have the Kindle for times when I want to take it to the gardens to read. I wish I got the Kobo in the first instance - it dissapointed me when the update for Kindle started prioritising books I didn't own over those I were in the middle of reading.

Not difficult at all to move your Kindle books to calibre. Amazon can at any time and for any reason delete your account and you will lose all your books.
