Hey,, welcome to the Kobo Family. Quick tip: if you look in your Device Settings, under Energy Saving and Privacy, there is a check mark to disable "Automatically sleep and wake up". Turning that off will prevent your magnetic pop socket from triggering the power.

Just as an explanation: The ability to put the Kobo to sleep or wake it up with a magnet is a feature so that covers/protectors can be constructed that will put the device to sleep when you close them and wake it up when you open them. There are a number of e-readers, tablets, and phones that have this kind of feature. As noted by rashkae1 it can be turned off on this Kobo.

Canadian Kindles cannot take advantage of seamless integration with Overdrive/Libby. Also, Canadian Kindles have Bluetooth disabled, so Audiobooks are out of the question. These two advantages, together with the buttons make Kobo the obvious choice for me. The magsafe issue is because the sleep covers use the magnets to make the device wake/sleep. Your magsafe is tripping the magnet and making the software think it should behave like a sleepcover. I think the recent firmware update allows you to use the page turn buttons for wake sleep now too. Also, apparently the Oxford English Dictionary 2024 edition that Kobo is using for the most recent software update removed etymology. I also like etymology in the definitions 😢

I looked up how waterproof kobo vs kindle were, because I like to read on vacation (pool or beach), and kobo came out much better. I also wanted buttons, I like turning pages like this better. Like you said, the statistics of each read is great! I like that there’s a browser on the device to look stuff up when I don’t have my phone near me. Loved this video! I'm already a kobo user and always have been, but I had actually been considering the opposite switch. This was really helpful in reaffirming my decision to stay with Kobo, but as a Clara HD user, I'm definitely going to keep my eye on the Libre's if I ever need to upgrade. Never thought I'd want the buttons, but I also had never considered how much easier it would be to read with the buttons in the bath! I think what I'm noticing after hearing a decent bit of discussion about both brands is that Kindle has leaned strongly in to providing cool experiences around the reading experience through accessories, like cases, stands, page turners etc. But Kobo has prioritized the actual reading experience, which is the most important for me. Thanks for sharing!

Kindle user here. I’ve always loved my Kindles: I had two basic models for a couple of years, then switched to the Paperwhite. However, I’ve noticed that Amazon seems to be trying to make us Kindle users dissatisfied. They’ve made it harder to use with the new updates: you can’t even transfer books to your Kindle via the app anymore, and they’ve removed several file formats, making it difficult to buy eBooks from other platforms. On top of that, the new Kindle costs a ridiculous amount of money and doesn’t even offer any significant new features! Like, okay, it has colors, but what else? I’m planning to switch to the Kobo Libra Color this Christmas. I mean, it’s an e-reader with a stylus that lets you annotate directly on the page AND has a notebook section where you can create your own reading journal, bullet journal, or planner-and it’s almost half the price! The pop socket issue is because they are designed for cases with a magnetic cover so when you slide the case it goes to sleep when you open it the kobo wakes up because your pop socket is magnetic it’s reacting in the same way but it shouldn’t do any damage. I’ve just purchased the bigme colour reader that I can have books on from both kobo and Amazon and anyone else’s books for that matter . It’s great but I bit more elaborate to use till you set it up how you want and a shorter battery time but it comes with a pen and case for a few pounds more than the reader itself. Thanks for the detailed breakdown. Last year, when I was traveling, I had a terrible experience with the Kindle Paperwhite Update. My Kindle died in a matter of days when I left it asleep, compared to a month when I wasn’t using it. And when they removed subscriptions for paper and magazines, it was just another major annoyance. I was considering getting a Scribe, but the cost and limitations for note-taking turned me off. Libby was also a huge factor - how this is restricted in Australia really disappointed me. While I was thinking about getting a Kobo, I think for my needs and the cost difference, the new iPad mini does what I need it to in a similar size. I still have the Kindle for times when I want to take it to the gardens to read. I wish I got the Kobo in the first instance - it dissapointed me when the update for Kindle started prioritising books I didn't own over those I were in the middle of reading.

I just got the Libra Colour a week ago. I've wanted something to write notes on for a while, and for me it was really between the Colorsoft and the Kobo Libra Colour. What sold me on the Libra Colour was value per dollar. The Colorsoft is *just* for reading. You can't write with it at all. You can argue that the Libra Colour isn't *great* for writing, and I'd probably agree with you (the slipperiness of the screen really hampers long writing sessions) but at least you *can* take notes with it. The two things I love the most about the Libra Colour are the Google Drive integration and the Overdrive integration. (I assume there are different licensing deals. It sounds like you have Libby on the Kobo Libra Colour instead of Overdrive over there.) The other thing I love is that not only is Overdrive integrated into the Kobo, but Kobo actually lets you know when you can get a book on Overdrive vs. buying it. You don't have to go check your library's page yourself. The only real downside for me is the battery life. With the Paperwhite, I never had to think about the battery (especially since I could just put it on the wireless charging stand). I don't think, the way I use it right now, the Kobo would last much more than a week without charging. The one thing my Kindle has that the Kobo doesn't is the ability to dim the light in response to ambient light. It's weird to me that hey have an ambient light sensor but only use it to adjust the color temperature rather than the brightness itself.
@lucycanread2 ай бұрын
Absolutely agree on value for dollar. Yes, the Kindle trumps Kobo in some areas, but ultimately I'm chuffed with it. And no, you're right - it is Overdrive here! Plus the Google Drive & Dropbox obviously. I tend to agree with the battery - it's objectively not as good as the Kindle, but for good reason, and I'm very rarely without power so I don't mind :) If you're interested - I use a matte screen protector which not only helps with using a stylus for that more paper feel (and no slip), it also doesn't retain fingerprints and smudges. Mayve have a look for one and give it a try! Thank you for watching Brian :D

hahah i agree, i feel like everyone is going to use their device differently so the battery isnt really a one size fits all and i have noooo issue with having to charge it once every 2/3 weeks lol. me too, i'm keeping my kindle as well for that reason!

Just discovered you on YT. Awesome video. I was about to go Kindle from my old Kobo and now I am going to upgrade to the Libra

The MagSafe issue is probable because of the auto sleep/wake-up for the sleep cover, which kobo sells. Basically, the sleepcover works through interacting with the magnets installed in the device's front panel but I can see how the MagSafe ring can trigger it. You can turn this off in the settings (auto sleep settings), or by placing your magnetic ring on the other side of the kobo, since the magnets it uses are on the side with the buttons.

The Libby thing is also why I gravitated to Kobo. (I'm in Canada) I also went with colour Kobo for the highlighting and covers, lol. So, solid reasoning 😅. I went with the Clara instead of the Libra because I prefer the smaller size. I did make the switch from Goodreads to Fable. I definitely recommend taking the plunge. Great video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! The pros and cons were bang on.

Thank you for this video. My Kindle Oasis is starting to not charge fully and I'm pondering potential replacements. I hadn't thought of Kobo e-readers until your presentation and I'll definitely consider one. And I am now a subscriber to your channel 😀

Many of these reasons are why I still use a Nook (recently “upgraded” to a Nook glow light). It’s just simpler to use, it integrates with the systems I want it to, it’s fast, and it’s not constantly shoving “buy this book!” In my face.

I got a Kindle in the pretty new matcha colour before Christmas because I'd only ever read on my iPad or IRL books prior. I love that it isn't damaging my eyes the way the iPad screen would over time, but I do find that it's pretty slow. I do love that if I have EPUB files I can use the Amazon site to send it to the Kindle, because I do sometimes use another site that's probably not great for legality reasons so I don't need to be purchasing straight from Amazon and linking my books only to Amazon. My bf is interested in getting an ereader so I'd be pretty keen to see if he'd be interested in the Kobo or not. I also love your vibes and your apartment is super pretty :3

That being said, I only charged it to full once and used it about 20 hours across a month and it only got down to 15% battery.

I put a tiny little sticky tab on the back of the stickers to keep them in one place without “using” the sticker. The tabs easily and cleanly peel off of the device afterwards, so no sticker residue.

Thank GOODNESS we finally have the ability to borrow digital library books here in Australia thanks to the Kobo! It is so wild to me that the kindle is the same price in all countries, but some regions (like here in Australia) we totally don’t even have access to some features like the freaking library! It is WILD to me!

Do I already have a kobo? Yes. Did I still watch this to validate the reasons I thought it was better… also yes. I did heaps of research before buying an ereader, and ultimately settled on a kobo. The main seller for me was the Libby integration (I’m also aus). It was also cheaper and it wasn’t Amazon which was a bonus.

honestly the Libby/Overdrive was actually the main thing for me as well too! It was so exciting for me that it easily outweighs issues like battery/screen contrast lol. 100% agree

In terms of the dictionary, it's probably just that the default Kindle dictionary is one that has the etymology. You could likely load the same dictionary onto your Kobo and have the default be that one.

I was a Kobo user for 5 years before I decided to buy a Kindle to go alongside it. I will say I'm still such a Kobo fan compared to using a Kindle. Libby only works through Kobos in my country so it has a little bit of an advantage too. It was interesting to see the new Kobo Libra Colour though as I've been waiting so long to see a coloured Kobo. I'm still rocking my Kobo Aura One that was discontinued shortly after I bought it in 2018. It's getting a little slower now from use and occasionally crashes and restarts if I click on a book too fast while it's trying to check for software updates but other than that it's great! When the time comes for me to upgrade, I'll definitely be getting a Kobo Libra because you've sold me on the buttons and the size.

I keep seeing videos like this and I'm so close to switching! I love my Kindle Oasis so much; I love the physical buttons! I get why Amazon would want to get rid of them; physical buttons are moving parts, and moving parts break, and breaking devices lead to warranty repairs and poor reviews... but buttons are so good! I can read in the bathtub with wet hands and not get any water on the screen! Ooh, it has a feature where you can turn off the touchscreen (until the next time you press the power button) and then it only responds to the buttons! I really wish they'd bring it back. But my Oasis' battery is getting worse; when I first got it (six years ago!) it lasted about four weeks with my regular usage, and now it struggles past just a few days. Makes sense since it gets such heavy usage and it's so old! I think it's had the longest actual usage-lifespan of any device I've ever owned! But I don't want to get a Kindle without buttons, and with all the other little niceties of the Kobo... I think you've convinced me! This is a great review!
@Art2D2Ай бұрын
This reminds me, another thing that convinces me to get a Kobo is that they are repairable. Kindles are nice but there isn't anything a regular user can do if something went wrong other than simply buy another Kindle. The Kobo has information out there on how to extend the life of your device.

I bought a Kobo a while back and was scared I made a mistake of not buying kindle, but I honestly think I dodged a bullet. I looove the fact that I can use libby on my Kobo. It makes it so easy to read library books. And it was way cheaper than Kindle. I really enjoy the progress bar at the bottom as well - and that i can customize it.

the flickering that happens whenever you do something on the screen is a near deal-breaker to me lol it'd be one thing if the page fully reloads once after a change is made, especially if instantly, but there's so many blinks happening on the page just from trying to highlight one word! no thank you lol

The magnet issue is because of how it detects if your case is closed, assuming you have a case with a flap over the front. It's the same way that a laptop, DS, 3DS, flip phone, or even just a regular phone with a cover case works. It shouldn't be damaging to the device, it's just that your magnet is confusing the device is all.

Been a Kobo fan from the days they first introduced waterproof. Upgraded to the first Libra h2o for the buttons even though my original still worked (and continues to still work to this day). It's such a great brand. Only problem I have are when authors I like set-up exclusive deals with Amazon Unlimited and the books are removed from all other retailers for a time.

"I wanted to try out buttons, and I wouldn't mind having colour..." Instant subscribe. =P I bought a Libre Colour for the exact same reasons. I will admit, I still use my Paperwhite for the majority of my ebooks, but it's more of a carry around, don't worry too much if you drop it, keep it in the work bag so you're never without a book thing. My Kobo stays at home, and I like the colour highlighting for when I'm studying an author's words rather than just devouring them.

The kobo turning on and off with the MagSafe pop socket isn't because the magnets are messing with the device, its intended behaviour.... sorta. The sleep covers use magnets to turn the device on and off when opened and closed but can be a pain when not using a sleep cover. I've even had mine turn itself on just by sitting in a bag next to my iPad because the magnets in it trigger it. If you go into energy saving and privacy in settings you can turn off auto sleep and wake and this won't happen anymore.

I've loved The Storygraph instead of goodreads--it even has a tracker for the amount of days you've read, and a "paused" and "DNF" option
@ochoheidoАй бұрын
I'm no magnet expert BUT! The Kobo case that you can buy for it stays closed with a magnet, and is designed to automatically turn on the Kobo when you open it and turn off the Kobo when you close it. There is an option (in my original Kobo Libra 2, at least, not the color) to turn off the setting where the Kobo automatically turns on or off when the magnet case is opened or closed. If you're not using the magnetic case anyway, you can probably turn that feature off, and then your pop socket won't activate it.

Hi Lucy, I have a Kindle Oasis which I’ve only had for a couple of years and it is great! I noticed that the battery seems to be dying recently so naturally thought of buying another. Like you, I was astonished that Amazon decided to drop these premium devices. I looked at the colorsoft - but to me, it seems cheap in comparison to an Oasis and as you say, there is a fault with them. None of the other Kindles appeal as they all seem a bit plastic and cheap looking for the money. I therefore decided to purchase yet another Oasis, you can only get these second-hand refurbished now. However to me, this seems far better than splashing out on a new Kindle which I know won’t be as good as the Oasis. I did wonder about a different make of e-reader such as the Kobo, but wondered if I would still be able to store my kindle books on it? That’s the only thing that has kept me from switching. Thank you for your video, it is great!

The NZ Kobo uses Overdrive (rather than Libby) to access the local library. Personally I like the ways that you can personalise many of the features on the Kobo. the standard two-finger spread geature to change the font is handy too. Also that you can turn the reading stats, etc, off as I have no interest in that sort of info, I'm just readiing. FWIW, The front cover of the Kobo sleep case I have for my Kobo folds into a handle/table stand, so there is no need for a pop handle or similar 3rd party accessory
@jw-5830Ай бұрын
Kobo also released the Clara BW (black and white) and Clara Colour as cheaper non-button options with the Libra Colour, and the Clara BW uses the newest black and white e-ink screen that has much better clarity than either color model due to the color models using a different type of e-ink screen. It's likely as good or better than the Kindle Paperwhite in terms of clarity.

If you like a good black and white contrast, kobo's white on black text reading option is really nice. Every kobo also comes with some minigames such as unblock or sudoku. You may need to unlock it (which is super simple) but it is a fun little extra when on long flights or something. The reason I initially chose kobo is because you control the books, kindles are notorious because it is not uncommon for amazon to remove books from their library, even if you purchased the books, you don't own them. Kobo is much freeer when it comes down to it. Unless something in your kobo glitches, you won't lose any books you purchased.

@lucycanread yes! Big fan myself of it, so understandable. If the games aren't visible in the beta functions you need to enter a string of text in your search bar and they will unlock. If you search online you should easily find it. Even the rakuten kobo site mentions that the colour has the games, but for some reason it doesn't mention how to unlock them 😅
