Not bad at all. Definitely better than I can do. But no one covers this better than Joe Nocella

NICE hi-hat work! That is an insane tempo of 16th notes to maintain with one hand. Smooth and effortless. I honestly think this is a unique skill you’ve cracked the code on. I’ve put years of work into this very thing. When I do it I’m hanging by a thread begging for the guitar solos to bring relief haha. Staying relaxed not allowing all that work to catch up with me is a technique that, so far, eludes me. Great job.
@zzzeek Жыл бұрын
thanks! In this video the "code I cracked" on the hihat thing is that I'm not playing every note :) I skip the one where the snare hits and maybe a few others here and there, so I can use more of a "finger the first three notes, then let the next four bounce out, then just rest" kind of thing. that is, I try to make the hihat notes that are really exposed sound very convincing and then others I am just mushing through or skipping. More recently I've been really working on fast hihat 8ths/16ths playing every note in earnest using a consistent technique, but that tops out at 16th notes at 100 bpm or so..this would be the equivalent of 108 and even now I can't play this speed without skipping notes

Nice job on this! I used to think this was how it was played and had a bunch of trouble with it Found a vid of dom playing it live earlier today using the floor tom for the gallops and its alot easier if you check that out! Its alot of fun too! Doubles up on the bass with the snare hits to make em sound chunky!

Cool choice! I haven't heard the song in a while but my memory is that there are quarter notes on the hi-hats on the original. What do you hear? Cool groove either way 👍
@zzzeek Жыл бұрын
oh yeah he likely does quarter notes, I wasn't trying to copy the groove on this one. Mostly if I was copying I'd want to duplicate those really crisp fills he does, but just doing my neal-peartish thing as usual (I'm still in a practice phase for a few years now where I'm adjusting to lighter sticks and also getting things back after about ten years of not playing).... thanks for the compliments!
