The rack doesn’t interfere even if you have crossbars over the sunroof.

Love your ingenuity here. How do you find this works with the extra weight of the BDV Duo? Any additions or changes you would suggest since changing to the heavy tent?
@nickmcdvttАй бұрын
Good question. It works just the same. I didn’t have to change any of the components. Just opted for straps this time instead of 2x4s. The weight of the tent is well within the working load limit of the weakest components in the system. For example, each eye has a 250-lb WLL, but only has to support about 40 lbs. The pulleys mounted to the wall support 400 lbs, so it’s plenty. They are cheap pulleys from ACE, so they have quite a bit of friction. If you wanted to pull with less effort, that’s only thing I’d change, but you pay quite a bit more for those. These do the job.

How did you get the front runner mounts on the cross bars? Assuming you had to use different bolts?
@nickmcdvttАй бұрын
Yeah, I had to drill one new hole on each bracket and use 1/4-20 bolts to fit the Sherpa insert nuts. Add a lock washer and fender washer and it works like a charm.
@BlueIndigoOverlandАй бұрын
@@nickmcdvtt Thank you! I've been scratching my head with that issue. Was thinking carriage bolts may work, but didn't love that result.
@nickmcdvttАй бұрын
@BlueIndigoOverland No problem! Yeah, carriage bolts don’t really work very well in the T-track aluminum extrusions.

Great video with a great vibe! I own a mild 2021 Tundra set up for adventures and grew up in Idaho. Previous rig was a modified 5th-gen 4Runner for exploring Idaho and Arizona. I would love to find a local group like this to go exploring with! All laid-back, good folks, who don't bash their rigs for the sake of bragging rights. I'm up in the Moscow area, and it's tough to find groups like this.

The tent really looks good, but seems like that the tent is built for tropical weather country and cant believe that ikamper kinda cheap out the flooring of the tent compare to the skycamp versions with hard solid honey comb.
@nickmcdvttАй бұрын
One of iKamper’s goals with this tent was to keep it light, but it’s no slouch in the rain. I’ve had it in downpours and it stays dry inside, open or closed.

What is the height from the bare roof to the top of the tent? I am trying to figure it out to see if I can fit it in my garage
@nickmcdvtt4 ай бұрын
I’m not exactly sure. The tent itself is about 7 in. tall. Dimensions should be on iKamper’s site. Mine is on quick-release brackets, which raises the height a bit more, but that 7 in. dimension should give you an idea of how far it will sit above your roof rack.

rad video and epic trip, thanks for some pro tips for trip planning out that way. curious if you'd be willing to point me in the direction of the area you crossed the river in the 4runner? i'm trying to route plan and have been staring at maps for a week and can't figure out where to get across near-ish to the hot springs so i can start my day over by basque and then move across and up to jordan valley on dirt without going all the way back and up and around through rome. also curious what month you were out there? thanks and keep up the good work!

Thank you for the awesome explanations! I really appreciate the quick release and pulley recommendations. I'm looking at getting a house with garage soon and was wondering what height you'd recommend the garage ceiling to be at a minimum. Average ceiling height for garages is only 8 feet, so what did you go with to make it fit well?
@nickmcdvtt5 ай бұрын
8-foot doors are the key. Then I think the ceilings in my garage are about 10 feet tall.

Have a UpTop Overland roof rack on 4Runner. Stronger and have more confidence. Sherpa has only 2 mounting points in the factory holes. UpTop Overland has three secured mounting holes… much stronger. Rubber blocks will degrade over time, that’s just science, good Automotive RTV silicone with rubber better. 4:11

Nice video. Can you advise me on how you get the mounts into the bottom channels for the crossbars? There is no way to slide t-track bolts in because the ends are blocked.
@nickmcdvtt6 ай бұрын
I made that mistake too. You have to slide tent mounting hardware in before you bolt the tent together. I forgot, so I unbolted the cross bars at the ends and swiveled them to the sides until I could get the hardware in the channels. It might take a little love tap with a mallet, but it works.
