Every regulator leaks. Ideally the 20 lbs of pressure would seal them but it doesn't. This is why THEY'RE NOT recommended for use indoors.
@ItsVideos3 ай бұрын
They are not recommended for use indoors because carbon monoxide can be a deadly by product of propane combustion.

I know this video has a little age on it :) but Thank you for taking the time to post this issue... and a BIG THANK YOU to those who commented below about the tank being the issue. I struggled with the same issue as seen in your video. I tried 4 different regulators from 4 different retailers... all did the same thing... I was going NUTS.... just didn't make sense..... and really still doesn't LOL :) But after swapping the Blue Rhino tank for another one, issue resolved!!!!!!!! Never in my life would I have guessed the tank..... Hope this also helps someone! :) God Bless!

have an old grill and no problems with leaks but it did the same thing with a new replacement tank. was considering buying a new regulator till i saw the comments about the o ring. brought the tank back to blue rhino exchange and the new replacement doesn't leak. it was the seal in the tank itself that was the problem.

If you have a cooler mash tun why do you need a HERMS? Won’t the cooler hold the temperature?

Trying to help folks who may have a regulator issue. There is a plastic 14.9 x 20 x 8mm spacer behind the acme nut on the regulators that goes bad (causing the regulator not to tighten all the way or not at all and will deem a regulator bad unless you pull it apart and replace it. I machined one from delrin but I suppose you could use a aluminum spacer from the hardware store and something similar to size. I think the original is nylon and mine didn’t last very long. It leaked in that very same place. I could see how the tank seal could be mistaken for the regulator acme nut spacer. Something to consider. I spent the last 2 hours diagnosing and repairing mine so my garage stayed heated overnight and didn’t freeze. Also I think the cheaper $9.99 regulators must be using Nylon. We all tend to hand tighten well and if you use it in cold weather it’s bound to crack and/or unravel itself inside. Mine was probably 4-5 months old. The small piece I picked out looked like nylon there wasn’t much left to affirm. Be cautious if you swap an aluminum sleeve so you don’t crack the acme nut over tightening. I chose delrin it’s tough yet flexible won’t ever crack like nylon and I have a lot of it here with a lathe I was able to whip out a sleeve quickly. Someone on eBay might even sell them. From what I can tell you could get buy with a 15mm ID just fine and probably up to 22mm OD you obviously don’t want it catching the cylinders internal threads. The length is crucial that it’s no less than 7.75mm and I wouldn’t allow it to be any longer than 8mm. That should give you guys some flexibility seeking a replacement sleeve. You can use a dremel and hand sand, etc to fit. Even if it wasn’t a perfect cylinder it should be fine it’s basically pushing everything together right inserting the orifice into the tank. Too short and it will leak. Too long and you risk cracking your acme nut if you over tighten it. Cheers I hope that helps so your not constantly replacing these.
@norass4113 ай бұрын
As a proof of concept, I threw in a garden hose washer behind the nylon spacer. Was able to tighten down on the fitting enough to stop the leak. Sounds like it's time to head to the lathe. Thanks!

How can it be the tank when the leak is clearly coming from the brass connection in the regulator assembly? I just tried a brand new LP regulator assembly with 2 new tanks and had this exact same problem. It seems to me that the fittings were not sealed properly. If the tank was bad wouldn't the leak happen closer to the tanks valve and the plastic fitting?
@syedpeersuhel76152 жыл бұрын
How did you solve it. I have a brand new grill and the leak is near the black connector . Would appreciate any help. This is the second cylinder and both are leaking
@B-Killin Жыл бұрын
@@syedpeersuhel7615 Did you ever find a solution? Mine is leaking similar to the video. I can feel gas coming out fast under the tank valve. I pull the regulator a little bit to the side where the brass fitting is and it completely stops leaking. Going to swap bottles and see what happens.
@michaelstevens96506 жыл бұрын
The reason your NEW regulator has the same problem is because the problem is NOT the regulator. It's the release valve in the tank. ANYTHING attached to that tank will leak.
@davidmills55572 жыл бұрын
Man, your absolutely correct! I waisted so much time, money and brain cells trying to fix the "regulator"... never would have guessed the tank based on where the leak is coming from. Thank you SO VERY MUCH for your comment, it really did save my sanity and probably my life from propane explosion!
@B-Killin Жыл бұрын
Yep! Thats what my problem was too. My leak would be very audible. It was a big leak. I could feel it coming out under the bottle valve. I could grab the regulator and pull on it toward me a little and the leak would stop. Got a fresh bottle and no more leak. What was weird about mine is that i almost ran that bottle empty before the problem started.

I have a couple questions for ya. one, when you're recirculating your wort through the herms coil, how are you preventing stratification in the hlt, so that you're keeping your wort a consistent temp? two, have you ever had a collapsed grain bed, while recirculating, that hindered the flow while you were recirculating? I sure do like the simplicity of your setup! seems like a great way to go herms without paying a ton for control panels, sensors, and all the other seemingly superfluous things that you could pay out the arse for. thanks for the video!
@enohcs8 жыл бұрын
I'm not certain I follow the first part of you question, but basically I use the HLT to help control the temperature in the mash. When I see the temperature dip, I add heat to the HLT, which heats up the wort in the coil, and increases the temperature in the mash. It may not seem all that fast or impactful, but I'm able to keep my mash temps to within a degree of my set point with this method. If I'm aiming for 154 and I see 153 on the thermometers, I can add flame to the HLT and over the course of 5min or so, and it's back to 154. It's much less harsh than heating the mash directly and potentially scorching anything. (ps...I now use 3 stainless barrels. I rarely use the converted cooler anymore) I've never collapsed a grain bed, but if I do end up heating the mash directly, I have to be very careful because if you heat it too much, you can stop the flow and scorch the wort.

@enohcs8 жыл бұрын
1. a mash can involve a number of different rests 2. NO. Yeast need that oxygen to form healthy cell walls. Oxygenate the heck out of it before pitching yeast.

Nice setup and video. I've been looking into creating a tiered setup and this was very helpful. I do want to advise that you change those tubes though... Not safe to use PVC vinyl with hot liquids, as they aren't made for that. You are potentially leaching harmful chemicals into your beer.

Thats not a problem with the regulator, its the rubber gasket on the tank thats leaking. They crack over time.

I bought a 620 gph at Harbor Freight for $30 with it being on sale, plus a 20% discount. I think it's going to work out great! I do have ONE question, so please get back to me if you can. So when I cleaned my kegs and carboys with PBW, I dumped the used water back into my PBW water bucket then I poured my StarSan solution bucket into the washer bucket and began sanitizing my kegs and carboys. I did rinse with water like you did. but at the water hose and not with the pump. I figure there is still PBW cleaning solution still in the pump and tubing, do you think I should just run the pump in clean water between the PBW and StarSan switch?
@472BB7 жыл бұрын
Yes- It is best to rinse out the PBW with regular water before pumping the StarSan. (PBW works because it has a high pH around 11, and StarSan is an acid so it is a low pH about 3.) Rinsing with water in between will keep your StarSan at the low pH, instead of neutralizing with the high pH PBW. This is useful if you keep your StarSan for more than one brewing session at a time. (I keep mine about a month, or until the pH creeps up to 3.5)

If you go with the 600 gph pump it will cost you about 50.00 at home depot. Harbor freight has a 200 gph for 12.99 and a lesser one for 8.99I think that is the one I will buy!
