Nice setup. You have given me some idea of have I can get started with herms. Thank you.

Great video. Did my first all grain brew in winter conditions and ran into too much mash heat loss. Going to recreate the HERMS setup you have to make some improvements on my brew day. Thanks!

Thanks for the math lesson on the gravity at preboil. Nice.

i really like the set up by the way still makes use of the 10 gal cooler and controlling the temp

such a bummer at the end! Thanks for sacrificing those yeasties to get it all on film.

I now use a platinum cured braided silicone. I used to use platinum cured silicone. You can pick it up at any homebrew store, or online. I did make my mash tun. I got the cooler from home depot, and the other components from the homebrew store.

I'm currently in the process of upgrading my system (it's nearly identical to yours), and I wanted to thank you for showing me what it will look like while in use. Have you ever considered using a screen mesh hop basket?

Hey dude nice set up, Not too complicated but still a powerful system. Just wanted to say you could get rid of that dead space with a pickup tube!

Sweet set up, I bet the beer was fantastic! I've been extract brewing with my brother for about 2 years now, but we are looking about upgrading to all grain brewing. I've got a few questions, what type of hose do you use for your mash and wort transfer? I haven't found anything at home depot rated over 150 Fahrenheit. Also did you rig up your mash tun yourself or buy it preassembled? I've seen some companies that sell them already set up and I didn't know if that was better than fabricating one

I'm not an engineer. You will find that once you go to all grain, everyone calculates efficiency. I HIGHLY recommend readin John Palmer's "How to Brew" and Ray Daniel's "Designing Great Beers" before you move to all grain. They will teach you a lot, and it will likely influence how you go about putting your system together.

Do you use brew software? and do you have any recommended resources. I have been brewing for about a year and half with 5 quart brew pot using a steeping grain method, diluting the boiled wort with cold water in my fermenter. I've been using recipes to brew (basically taking the ingredients from the kits I used to buy and just getting the individual ingredients which ends up being a bit cheaper). But I'm looking to upgrade my system to something similar to yours. Where did you start??

how much wort did you lose not using a pick up tube? noticed your pre boil volume was pretty hight for 5.5 gallons of wort

not really. I do a whirlpool and let settle for 20min. Most of the trub stays behind. I just did a 10gal IPA with nearly a pound of pellet hops and had very little wind up in the fermentor.

enohcs, I suggest you put in the description what HERMS means so others might understand what you're educating here. Nice video

(2) myself. Also, last question, you wouldn't happen to be an engineer, would you? As an undergraduate ME major I don't know many people outside of the department who calculate system efficiencies
