I've a springer 2 months or so younger than Enzo and I've been really enjoying following his progress along. Seeing a similar aged pup out in the real world (And not just a hand selected perfect few minutes!) has really helped keep my expectations in check which means lower pressure and better training sessions when we go out. Keep up the regular updates, they really do help viewers! and if you've got any tips for dealing with the transition into adolescence it'd be great to see a video on - Especially for things like keeping his focus and avoiding those times when he becomes hard of hearing because he's found a scent or seen something that looks too exciting to ignore!

The new spaniel puppy here, who is named Thistle, is doing very well. 12 weeks old now and working on placeboards (2 at this point) and doing well. This video is a month old as I watch it and I hope that Cooper is feeling better - but it hit close to home. As I wrote in previous video and comments with you, we have the wee Cocker pup coming next week . A main reason for bringing home the new pup now, was that our oldest girl is now going on 13 and had slowed noticably - same as your Cooper. Today after 8 weeks of this "slowing down" we had results from the vet, who has been testing her extensively - she has cancer. Her treatment will be palative at this time and we've been told this cancer can bee very fast, so we should be prepared - possibly only 1 to 2 months left with our girl. She has always given her all - winning two High in Trials in one season and numerous other awards and always a joy to live with and train with. Very best wishes for you and Cooper - I hope you have lots of time left together and thank you for your videos.

I have a playlist in the channel menu just for Enzo. I was going to say if you are watching Ian Openshaw you don’t need advice from me 😂 buuut, I picked little bits of advice from different sources, an open mind to it all, you have to have the ability to adapt, every dog is different. The bonding, but without pandering, is a must from minute one. Everything is fun, use your voice tone as your number one training tool. Silly voice when you’re playing etc and gruff when it’s not doing as you want. I always start ‘sit stay’ right away, feeding time etc . But maybe Ian Openshaw would say different. Don’t overthink anything and put yourself in the puppies head.

@@northlawgundogs5254 Your advice is good right from the start in that I've always found the key to any training is to adapt to the dog in front of you, and sharing training methods is another important idea to me. I will watch Enzo's playlist and I'm sure I'll pick up lots of good tips from it. Thanks again - and I look forward to all your future videos. Our new girl (Thistle) will be home next week! Excellent video - very useful as we are training this now, however, not with our spaniel who will arrive next month, but with an 18 month old Border Terrier! Sounds crazy I know to teach this to a working Border Terrier, but good practice for the Spaniel and good control of the dog which is ideal in any situation. Thank you for your videos. Also, your photos at the end are really lovely - I too shoot film with a Nikon from the 1970's. Your photos are Art and not simple pics.

I love watching these videos. For a beginner like myself it really helps. I’m just starting the retrieve work with my 9 week pup…however it’s fiery frustrating 😂 How do you train the sit and stay? Does that just come once the sit is mastered? Thanks
@northlawgundogs52543 ай бұрын
@@scotty-sb1403 yeah, I just start right away with sit, it’s all part of building manners particularly ‘door’ manners, 4 dogs crashing through a door before me or before I say it’s ok is a no no. Make them sit when you’re putting food down etc. A wee gentle push on their tail end “sit” and stay. If you are going to use a whistle it’s a wee ‘pip’ which in time leads on to a ‘stop whistle’. It’s not rocket science, don’t over think anything. A dog ain’t complicated, simple commands but don’t give them an inch. Retrieve drills in a convined space like a hall in the house, fun based, lots of stupid voices etc. Only 9 weeks, don’t get frustrated with it, 10 minutes max a couple of times a day, build the bond at this age, it’ll pay off for the rest of your time together 😉

How many times a day did you walk your puppy when he was 13 weeks? We have a 13 week old springer and try to walk him 3 times a day giving him lots of different experiences
@northlawgundogs52543 ай бұрын
Pretty much the same, if I didn’t/ don’t manage the middle walk I’ll take him out in the garden for 10 minutes to do a wee drill or two. Mental stimulation for a spaniel is as good for them as exercise. Mine is 5 months, he gets 25/30 first thing with the whole team, early afternoon 20 mins then before bed 10/15, I am lucky to have a big garden so I does get general messing about time as well . Just don’t over do is the key, hard not to I know😂

If were to meet another dog on your walk how would you and they react?
@northlawgundogs52543 ай бұрын
@@Michael-j7n9m entirely depends on the situation and who it is. If we are on a path or pavement mine are at heel and will largely be told to ignore another dog and walk on. But there is a high chance it’s someone I meet most days so I’m happy as long as they are happy for the dogs to mix. There is the odd person or dog that I know is freaked out at the pack walking towards them so I act accordingly. But most people I meet where I go are appreciative of how well behaved mine are and want to talk to them. For training etc I know where to go where there isn’t likely to be anyone.

Any tips for me when we come across other dogs, young one gets very excited and scatty when he sees another dog and won’t settle after
@northlawgundogs52543 ай бұрын
@@Michael-j7n9m don’t you react by pulling the lead tighter or talking in a stressed voice, the dog will read your reactions. Depending on age it sounds like it hasn’t been socialised enough, if still a young pup it’s natural. My pup hasn’t seen enough dogs and sometimes reacts like a clown. We simply don’t see many dogs. Again depending on age go sit somewhere busy and let the dog see other dogs, bite the bullet kinda thing, it’s what I need to do also!

@@coosanman if you’ve got the bond built right from the start plus the other dog/s, he will always want to be with me and the pack.
