in Born2Win, the "ruffled shoulders" dress is a traditional Filipina dress, worn by women of days past. I believe that attire was meant to connect with the "Binibini" honorfic title (for "young lady"), from which "Bini" was derived. Please react to their live performance of Cherry On Top at KCon LA (be sure to view the official video)

I'm 46 and the first album i bought with my own money as an 11 year old was new jack swing and it was 'Bobby Brown - Dance Ya Know It'... supernatural gives me serious Every Little Step vibes... even down to the signature bobby brown double side kick he does in the video and newjeans do in this. NewJeans literally do all my fave genres growing up like this when i was a kid... to the miami bass and more traditional RnB of my school/college days to UK garage and Drum and Bass of my Uni and early 20s clubbing days... a couple of others female NJS sogs of the top of my head are paula abduls 'knocked out', and Janet Jacksons 'Nasty'... also i think this group should count even though two of the members were guys but the singing was very prominently the 3 girls is the British 5 sibling group 'Five Star' pretty much all their songs where new jack swing

Their producers really understand how to make their sound appeal to new and old Gen alike. And props for the Bobby brown vinyl. First on I remember was Janet Jackson's rhythm nation. I even bought the 1814 pin from Spencer's back in the day.

The bit you are explaining at around 13:00 i always thought it was intended for them all to be slightly different and off to accurately depict the new jack swing dancing style of the late 80s/early 90s.. nothing was super rehearsed or practiced back then and in turn looked a bit more clunky.. particularly with boy groups like bel biv devoe or bobby brown with his back up dancers it had a more of a freestyle routine like they would do the same move but no one would be totally in sync... the irony here is that newjeans have probably super rehearsed and practiced this to look like they haven't super rehearsed or practiced it.. lol... i might be wrong but that was always my take on it

Yeah there are no official main positions in the group.... most bunnies i think agree though if there was a main dancer it would be either hanni or haerin.. hanni for all roundedness and haerin for her footwork.. no hate on hyein or dani because THEY ALL slay... but i think the hip hop routines really suit Haerin, Hanni and Minji especially.

They're all homegrown full-blooded Filipinas (no halfies among them). As someone already mentioned, it's common to have Filipino songs to have all-English lyrics. Also, English is their second language since it is the medium of instruction in Philippine schools (they are all still continuing their studies I think). For 2 of them, Tagalog is probably just their 3rd language. BINI whose name was derived from the Filipino word Binibini (young lady) was formed through Star Hunt Academy (a reality show aimed at producing global girl and boy groups) so yes, the vision was always to go international (but probably not through the Korean shows like MNet since the company they're signed with is a content producer too). In fact, Born to Win is available in 4 other languages (Bahasa, Japanese, Spanish and Thai). They even went busking in New York and LA. But most of their activities are based locally by performing live (no backtracks or lip syncing) at musical variety shows as well as events (malls shows, school and music festivals, corporate gigs) in the past 3 years so they've honed their performing skills well. They just had their solo concert all over the PH this year and they're also coming out with another documentary on this soon (they already have a few available on their YT channel). The reason I think it's not necessary for them to promote in Korea to go international is that they don't have any Korean songs (they'd be better off promoting Ph culture) and they're too progressive for the conservative Koreans. If you watch any of the recordings of their unfiltered live broadcasts on Kumu (a platform similar to Weverse and Bubble), they do things that are probably going to get them cancelled in SK. Not that they're doing anything bad or obscene (since Ph is predominantly Catholic), they're just unapologetically being themselves. It's not uncommon to hear them scold their fans/bashers for trying to put them in a box or hear some members fighting in the background or members pulling pranks on each other. Also, the music community here is more collaborative than competitive since PPop is still relatively at its infancy. The only way I see them promoting on KShows is if they collaborate with other KPop groups or artists. There have been several local girl groups formed in the past but they were mostly provided novelty or sexy concepts and not honed to become serious musical artists. There have also been other GGs that debuted ahead of them that are also talented and well-trained in both singing and dancing but none have achieved the level of popularity as BINI has now... so I guess you can call them 1st gen PPop.
@DITKoreates
@DITKoreates 20 күн бұрын
Appreciate all the info especially the part about them not being particularly marketable in SK. Thanks.
@ma.dolldoll9003
@ma.dolldoll9003 20 күн бұрын
@@DITKoreates It's not that they're not likely to be marketable in SK, I think Koreans can appreciate their talent. It's just that they don't have songs targeted for the Korean market. (Isn't SK a small market, anyway? Much of KPop's consumers are outside SK.) It just doesn't make sense for BINI to promote there except maybe to attract the attention of KPop consumers.. Most foreign idol-wannabes go to SK for the training and exposure but why should BINI bother with that when they get better training where they are now. As for exposure, participating in KCONs held outside SK is a better option for them. Or maybe have their story shared through a global platform like Netflix (the way Blackpink broke out... I'm not saying they'll be as big as BP because BP was already big from the start; it's just that they blew up more after their Netflix docu. PS. I'm Blink so I know music will play a huge role in how popular they can get.) And I think the girls will just be miserable if they have to pander to the unreasonable demands of SK nationals on their idols. The girls are better off being in an environment where they can be happy being themselves so they can perform better. (Just consider this: if SB19 is KPop, they would already be cancelled because they are currently endorsing a burger food chain on the BDS list.) Not to mention, most members of BINI are breadwinners of their own families unlike the KPop idols who have parents who can afford to give them allowance while they train at their agencies. BINI members can't afford to perform at Korean music shows that give little to no compensation to idol performers.

@@DITKoreates I totally get the notion of going to another country to earn a living for their families (which is common among Filipinos, too). I just wish the girls won't have to do that. I just found out about XG and realized why you would think that would be the same case for BINI. I know it wouldn't really help BINI if you don't stream their official MVs but as an alternative, you can look for color-coded lyric videos of their songs with English subs before watching their official dance practices and live performances (which is their unique selling proposition - singing/rapping live without back tracks WHILE dancing in sync to dynamic choreographies). I get that the music is a matter of preference and that it may not appeal to everyone's taste (ear/hearing?) Anyway, thanks for the BINI reactions. Maybe you can also include in your reactions how you think the group could get more recognition in your neck of the woods?

Composing English songs does not necessarily mean that it is meant primarily for International audience. It just happened that along with Filipino/Tagalog language, English language is also an official language of the Philippines. Contracts and most official documents in the country is written in English. Now when BINI was formed, the intention was really to go global. Their management aims to create groups that can go toe-to-toe with KPop and to show that Philippine Pop is also a genre of music that is worthy of recognition. And what sets it apart is that they serve live quality vocals as against the lip-synching and heavy use of auto-tunes in KPop.

Aespa - their name, plays upon the term/idea of AI, except AI as a 'real' world. For every 'you' there is an AI (ae) version of 'you'. KWANGYA is like another universe. SYNK is when ourselves and our ae sync up. FLAT is where the ae live. There is more and it gets confusing but the large scale concept is that the Black Mamba is the 'bad guy'. The Black Mamba tries to corrupt us and our ae selves from truly being happy. That sort of thing. The MY (Aespa fandom) could probably go deeper. There is a storyline though. As I understand the 'main tracks' it's Black Mamba, Next Level, Savage and Girls. I believe Supernova and Armegeddon also ties into the storyline.
